La Défense is not Paris. Go tell that a Parisian and he... why don't you ask our resident pope about what his fellow citizens think of things like that.

Re: What have you learnt today?

Today I've learned that the reason I never got any encouragement growing up is so that I wouldn't stray too far from home, from my widowed mother. My crack whore sister got it all and was encouraged out the hoo ha, had everything paid for, schooling and stuff, only to develop an artificial sense of entitlement and a more permanent Xanax and booze habit. Me, nada. Everything I got I got on my own, and now at 42, I am so tired. I just want to run away from everyone and never be found. I just feel so deflated.
    Inspired - but too tired.

Re: What have you learnt today?

There comes a time when you are TOLD things you know, that
you thought you knew long ago, and perhaps did, but failed to act
upon in a way that mattered.

When this happens with someone you love, instead of ignoring it,
you must think, stop, slow down, and DO.

When those you thought least understanding say, DO, shut up and DO.

    It is time to DO.

I love my parents. I'm sooo old, but lucky that way.

That Burger King is making their own McRib.

And that, as a person raised in the south, I am considering suing them and McDonalds for not understanding what a rib really is.

Somehow, Maggie Smith is always Miss Jean Brodie, even in Harry Potter.

I pictured Miss Brodie as someone less dry than that.
Somehow, Maggie Smith is always Beaker, even after gaining weight and skin folds.

^ I just had to Google what Beaker is. But I'm none the wiser.

I agree Maggie Smith could be considered one-dimensional and typecast. I further agree that she too often does cheap imitations of that trashy homosexual dead English comedian named Kenneth Williams (if you don't know who Kenneth Williams is, Benderboy can tell you).

Allergy to asian ladybirds/ladybugs is being reported as their number increase. This seems to be on par with the cane toad in Australia. You bring in a non-native species to try and tackle a local problem and it becomes a pest.

    The Drivers Seat
is fascinating, it's about a woman with a death wish. It's like that insane woman at the salon in Pinter's The Pumpkin Eater.
OK, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie may seem less fascinating. Maybe it's because we have seen the movie and we know what's going to happen. I think the genius in Muriel Spark is that she takes characters and carefully unravels their dark tragedies— yet does so in a elegantly funny/bitchy way.

I finally decided to start reading The Prime because of what I had read about the way Spark unfolds and anticipates the plot, the characters and their fates--- but even so it was a FUCKING BORE! It's so British!!

Yes I think that character is a one-note character. And that movie version of Volpone , shows as you mentioned earlier that Joseph L Mankiewicz was a slave to dialogue.

I had to assume that Joseph L Mankiewicz is in the top five homosexual movie directors even if his career didn't go far.

Yes, perhaps she does have limited audience just like a psychiatrist has a limited audience. She can get into the reader's brain and unlock them efficiently.

I recommend the short stories; they're quick and efficient.

It may have not gone far, but it surely spread like deep-staining oil for over thirty fucking years... but, as I likewise mentioned earlier, Tarantino is even WORSE on that respect.

I've only heard bits of Julian and Sandy but they just seems so creepily working class.

And this two seem rather tragic also.

But I guess austere 1950s England, prior to Carnaby Street/the Swinging 50s/Thatcherism seems so grindingly depressing. So many of those Osborne/Pinter/Richardson/Angry Young Man plays are grindingly depressing with the only hope being if they can escape by migrating to Canada or Australia. But I guess now they can escape by going on frequent holidays to get drunk in Ibiza and Spain.

I can't bear that vulgarian shyster.

He is even worse than Mankiewicz in being a slave to dialogue. Only once have I paid money to see his stuff at the cinema. And never again! That thing called Glorious Bastards was one hour over-length, episodic and UN-cinematic. There were dialogue-heavy scenes in that over-long movie which would have played better on an off-Broadway stage than on the screen.

Oh thank you: I had thought it was my broken English ear, but I see I had got it right

The Women is by George Cukor and you earlier mentioned Joseph L Mankiewicz. I consider those two, as well as Vincente Minelli, Joshua Logan and Stanley Donen, as the most financially-successful homosexual directors in 20th century mainstream movies.

    I guess that's a matter of opinion.

You really are obsessed about fame and success linked to [male] homosexuality, aren't you.

Yes. Fame and success = money and power.

I am interested in how human beings are commodified and sold.
