Our whole culture is steeped in Christianity and to a lesser extent Judaism.

It's a heritage that should be preserved rather than destroyed by those who feel entitled to carry a grudge against the generations before us.

Some rappers put out their "they see me rollin, they hatin'" song...immediately followed by their "I'm sad because people hate me for no reason" song. Look, either you're cool with people hatin', or you aren't. Pick one.

It's curious how religious feeling make, relative to their superior or even absolute importance, lesser works of art.

May be because of some intrinsic difficulty to making real something so fairy and airy.

I am not criticising religion, but WORKS of art, just trying to make an unprejudiced point about aesthetics, and not mistaking real concrete values with affective or "symbolic" ones: take your example as one Michelangelo and all the Rennaissance output was just the last, greater bud of Gothic art. It's true that European sculpture was never THAT great even after Michelangelo, but the most technically and pschycologically subtle and sophisticated art was developed on less pompous subjects like portrait and landscape, and some of the greatest religious paintings look like this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5uT80CKkoU...cob-ribera.jpg

Or Mozart's religious work (the supposedly greater ones, not the church sonatas and the like): I used to wonder how come he composed such stiff and boring stuf in that department, until I read Landon or some other commenting on the creative restrictions that fettered his talent.

I wonder what else you would consider "amazing", just to have a more definite idea of its real content, you know.

In almost every case, one can draw an origin to religion in these extremist views towards homosexuality.
What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Did the Abramic religions brand sodomy a crime or did they merely adopt a pre-existing tradition in much the same way many modern churches have embraced environmentalism?

I'm not an apologist for Christianity, it's just that some things are far, far, worse.

Considering that entire books of the Bible are outreaches to Greek cities to dissuade them of their immoral ways, including men laying with men, no, it's absolutely false to suppose that homosexuality was always universally spurned and that Abrahamic religions merely went with the flow.

I learnt today that the French members of parliament are fools, understand next to nothing to what is a logical expression, are badly educated and are saying such absurdities as to drive me crazy. I would need to behead quite a number of MP.

(The 3 major articles of the law about the same sex marriage and adoption have been voted, the 4th is to adapt the different codes of law, the 7 next are minor.)

That people are willing to forget that they just tried to backstab you - if you're useful, of course.

I so hate Cicero's fame... years ago, I threw to the trash one volume of Oxford's SCBO edition of some of his orations, and another with his Catiline ones.

The Enlightenment being Europe's true gift bequeathed to the world; a history of putting religion in it's place, not steeping in it and wallowing in it. A history of first questioning absolute papal authority, and then questioning even the authority of the local theocrats. An indispensable legacy that made modern freedom possible.

And Europe's current problems are not to be solved by rushing back into the bosom of Christian theocrats: is is by applying the principles of the Enlightenment to the religion of anyone else who comes knocking at Europe's shores; of questioning anyone's sense of divine entitlement as was done with Europe's old religions; of making clear that Europe is outside the scope of people's private beliefs.

If any religion can't pass through the same Enlightenment filter that Christianity did to become a modern and moderate personal matter, then such a religion has no place in a free continent.

I learned today lots of details about what a vacation in Iran might entail. I would so like to go. I could.

Unfortunately, what I already know is that $2,400 a week is too much of a splurge.

The worst thing...is not energy depletion, economic collapse, conventional war, or the expansion of totalitarian governments. As terrible as these catastrophes would be for us, they can be repaired in a few generations. The one process now going on that will take millions of years to correct is loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural habitats. This is the folly our descendants are least likely to forgive us.--e.o. wilson

nope, Cicero means chick pea (Cicero's family was famous for the 'pea' sized cleft on an ancestor's nose, true or not).

I discovered that Trader Joe's Organic Mayonnaise tastes so good I can eat it by itself.

Yesterday I learnt many things at Alcatraz... the audio tour was fascinating.
