People are too willing to lay down so they can be walked all over again. Dealing with roommates has taught me this, and it's an unpleasant sight from the sidelines...

Pinterest? I'm not familiar with that term. ... but yes, it could be the script, java, flash, pop up blockers, ad-ons ... causing the problems.

Think of your browser as a car. In safe mode, you're JUST driving the car. You're NOT including the intermittent wipers, cruise control, heated seats, air conditioning, AM/FM Radio with CD player, GPS, ... Make sense?

While it SEEMS better, you are also probably more open and vulnerable to various cyber attacks, because more then likely whatever safe guards you have are also turned off.

I reached an interesting conclusion that some Catholic hymns could basically be broadway songs and it made me conclude that some hymnals are quite gay.

This is the one that struck as "Broadway worthy". Just listen to the runs in the refrain...

If I took coffee like the average of mortals do, I'd be moderating this whole message board with a single hand to death. Too busy for porn, meaning too busy for even wanking. Last night I went to bed relatively early, just before half past one.

When they talk about someone being crazy they do not actually talk about the disease or about whether it is hurting that someone and sending his life to waste: what they are talking about is about their own being upset or/and scared by their perception of that someone, and their own need to find some pseudorationalization to all of it so that they can feel very authorized to give vent to their anger or patronization.

Actually, I do. My female best friend suffers from bipolar disorder. I knew it was a touchy subject and didn't know how to approach it the best way. Evidently I failed, and please excuse me if I offended you.

It's not a phobia. It's just that in the U.S. whilst sounds pretty "vintage British" and archaic, and it serves exactly the same purpose as "while" while sounding a lot older. And supper is just not generally used. It's rare enough that if someone invites you to "supper" you'd definitely be caught off guard.

It just "sounds off." I'm not phobic about it. But frequent use of either word would make me think the person is from another part of the world.

Another one--the expression "in hospital". Or "maths". I chuckled the first time I heard the word "maths", because it sounds like someone "doing it the hard way."
Don't forget "qualified as a chemist."

We only ever refer to that as being a pharmacist.

Dinner comes from 'Dîner' and Supper comes from 'Souper'.
For a very long time, apart from the very rich, the meal before going to bed was constituted by 'une soupe', ie a soup. Hence the 'Souper'. Dinner is for a meal more generic where any kind of food can be served.

My undying admiration to people who can say the differences between a soup, a potage, a consommé, a bisque, a bouillon, a velouté or a garbure

I learned if you tweet a jokingly derogatory comment about a certain chain restaurant, they'll respond to that tweet in less than five minutes.

I'm pretty clueless about how social media works. And restaurant chains. And people. And a bunch of other stuff.

Yet another thing I don't know much about. I'm starting to wonder if I know anything at all. That's OK - I never let it worry me none.

QUOTE: JohannBessler [JUB quote function isn't working for me today; happens once in a while]
^We used to use "supper" all the time in the South. No one--at the time--ever used the word "dinner".
I don't know if they still use it.

Another one--the expression "in hospital". Or "maths". I chuckled the first time I heard the word "maths", because it sounds like someone "doing it the hard way."
I was born and raised near Detroit, and my parents ALWAYS called the evening meal "SUPPER." I wonder what a "supper versus dinner" map would look like. (Somewhere I saw a map showing where soft-drink beverages are variously called soda, pop, coke, and tonic. Maybe there was another term as well, I forget. Quite interesting.)

I will sometimes say "in hospital" and "to hospital." Which brings up THIS question: Why do we say...

    go to school
    go to college
    go to work
    go to court
    go to jail
    go to church

but we say go to THE university, and THE synagogue?
BOSS: I'm sorry, but I'll have to lay you and Jack off.
SUE: Can you just jack off? I feel like shit today.

Are they really that Chinese in the US: so what does "ground floor" mean to them? "Basement"?
