I'm actually pretty good about ditching things, but my partner tends to hoard. He gets it from his parents, who hold on to everything. He's somewhat better than they are, but we still have a room which basically is the "throw it back there" room.

can see why someone would hold on to something though. you never know when you might need it even if there's a good chance you might not. used to have a big bag in the closet full of receipts. there's nothing worse when suddenly, your memory pops up like "oh shit, what about this magazine?" and then ya can't find it.

I threw away my school work from 20-30 years ago last year. I was loathed to throw the biology stuff out, all my beautiful hand drawn and coloured pics of dental, aural, and eye cross sections, layered illustrations of musculo-skeletal and internal organs, sexual reproductive organs etc. But keeping them in the damp shed had made most of the work begin to grow mold, so I took them all to the dump.

yeah well most stuff you have you don't really need. Here's a test - imagine there is a slow fire near your place and a good chance your place will burn but only in a few hours. You haven't been told to leave yet but good chance that is coming again in an hour or two. What would you take out to your car or truck? Assuming you have a car/truck - if not what would you put in your suitcase?

For me, I would collect the family heirlooms that are in one area. Just the smaller ones that could be dumped in a box real quick and they are mostly already in one place. Then I would grab my important papers (Revenue, financial, titles) and since these are all in a box file it would only take a second.
The rest of it (clothes, furniture, kitchen etc) I would leave. it's replaceable. I would grab a few jackets/parkas and my mukluks if I had time. Arctic boy here needs them. But all that is in the front closet very quick to grab.
I would probably grab my laptop but leave all other electronics alone like TV/DVD. Again, replaceable.

If I had less time I would only get the momentos and papers.

But it does make me wonder: what if a hoarder was faced with a house fire? Would they simply die there?

No, I don't hold on to many things I don't need, I do have a stuffed animal rabbit and a sweater my parents made me as a baby but that about it.

    I wouldn't say "useless trash"...I don't hoard things.

But every once in a while, I do get rid of clothes and other items that I held on to for sentimental value once upon a time but that no longer mean much to me. I donate them to charity or something. I just get an idea in my head that I want a fresh start and this usually means I part ways with some of my belongings and I feel good about it.

The wonder of living in NYC size standards. If I have anything useless, it doesn't stick around for long. Ain't nobody got room for that!

I do the 'Use it, love it, or lose it' thing every few years or so.

If I do not reguarly use a thing, or simply love it for some reason or other, I get rid of it. This usually entails me dumping at least 1/3rd of everything I own.

In recent years years I have ditched all my old vinyl, cassetes, and cds; I have no need of physical media anymore. I've also begun ruthlessly culling my books which probably take up more room in my flat than they warrant. Most of them I am extremely unlikely to read again

The older I get, the less physical stuff I want cluttering up my life.

Everytime I have moved home during the past 35 years or so I have left loads of stuff behind; so far I haven't missed any of it.

I'm not a hoarder by typical standards but I did buy a storage locker before I moved into my ex's place. There's a lot of stuff that could be thrown out like old school work and there is some furniture in there too. When I get my own place eventually, all that crap will be out of the locker.

    My car is quite spotless.
