Susan Rice Next Secretary of State ?

In what can only be described as some kind of joke ......

it appears that Pres. Obama wants to put Susan Rice in to replace Hillary Clinton

The same woman who embarrassed herself by lying on several Sunday AM talk shows SELLING the narrative of a spontaneous reaction/terror attack ....... from a video

She didn't have information that was readily available or she lied - neither speaks well of her

Pretty ballsy and fuck you move for the Obama Administration to do this

    while the Benghazi "investigation" continues

while the David Petraeus what the fuck thing continues - the same David Petraeus who did his own investigation into Benghazi and what really happened

Pretty curious move by newly re-elected Pres. Obama

Making everyone year for John Kerry to replace Hillary

We'll see - perhaps this is a red herring

SHe didn't embarrass herself. She was going by what the intelligence said. Yes, I hope she is made Secretary of State... I'm tired of republicans making a huge faux outrage about something they don't even grasp.

And what information was readily available? When said what she did the CIA was telling the administration it was a demonstration. They did that for ten days. Yes, lets keep up the faux outrage... it just appears more sour grapes for Romney's utterly disastrous election bid.

John Kerry is going to be Secretary of Defense most likely as he's a technocrat.

Kerry got passed over SoS and may get Defense now. It's just one giant game of musical chairs.

I hope she is picked for the Secretary of State. I'd love to see more faux outrage among republicans after their COLOSSAL DEFEAT at the polls. Here is the reason... she was told one thing by the CIA... and who heads the CIA? For ten days the CIA said it was a protest. As far as Petraeus... he couldn't keep his pants up and it detracted from his job.

And if Obama brings back Colin Powell into the sway of things that'll really shut down republicans.

I am pretty sure Petraeus, a scandal ridden republican (gee that sounds familiar), testified to the same understanding of events. Perhaps he was too busy getting a BJ to get a full report...

Hmmm Making a highly successful career diplomat SoS... how lacking in judgement...

i want her to be nominated as well just to hear Pugs like Hannity, Oreilly and Limbaugh go stupid...

are they trying to save money by recycling Condi's "Secretary of State Rice" stationary?

edit: I'd love to get an answer for the whole Libya thing (eg: why was it portrayed as being a riot incited by a youtube video if we knew all along it was a terrorist attack?) but I don't think being a propagandist disqualifies one for Secretary of State. it's more of an asset, really.

Susan Rice cooked herself when she went on the 5 Sunday shows and spread the "it's the video" lie.

She'll never get approved SOS -- she should stay at the UN and out of sight.

I dont know if she is running for President. She might so it would clearly conflict with SoS because that job is vast.

Google her schedule, for a 65 yo I think it is pretty damn pressing to be living out of a jet and in a new time zone damn near every day.

Thankfully Rice wont have that much of a battle because the tape is in and the republican outrage is based on them lying to themselves over what she said. That and their margin in the senate is much smaller so now the Dems only have to find five rational republicans. Still a tall order to find five republican who love their country but I know they can do it.

Obama said in a 60 Minutes piece recorded September 12 that it was direct attack on us, not just a mere outgrowth of the protests of the video in Egypt. He said it was definitely directed against America. Then he emphasizes the video aspect for almost 2 fucking weeks.....on "The View" on September 25 he could have gone back to the truth he spoke September 12 but yet again emphasized the video aspect. Susan Rice wasn't just blissfully ignorant repeating CIA talking points as Giancarlo sniffs. It became an Administration talking point all of a sudden. Why????? Susan Rice has also been pretty accomodationist with Iran and other regimes, willing to talk without preconditions....she's a horrible candidate to portray strength at State and really isn't that good at her UN position either.

Add to this President Obama's inexplicably partisan and wrongheaded thinking in strongly considering Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts for Defense Secretary and in two key areas, State and Defense the president whose campaign mantra was "forward" is going backward. I had hoped to give him some slack and see if he could redefine his direction but now as then Obama's compass seems hopelessly broken.

for what it's worth, it's pretty common for Secretary of State to be a one-term position.

GWB, Clinton, and Reagan all went through 2+ SoS's over their 8 year terms.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...time_in_office

out of 67 Secretaries of State ever, only 15 or so have served longer than ~4 years if I'm reading that chart right.

Well taken position.....definitely a stressful office that is conducive to periodic change. Just disappointed in the lack of political savvy and wisdom in President Obama's preference for Rice being so adamant.

It was based on the intelligence that she was provided for almost two weeks.

Susan Rice wasn't just blissfully ignorant repeating CIA talking points as Giancarlo sniffs. It became an Administration talking point all of a sudden. Why????? What ignorant CIA talking points? As compared to the ignorant talking points I see from the political right on here?

Susan Rice is highly qualified for the position of Secretary of State and has a lot of experience with foreign relations. Maybe you should cut the petty partisan politics, and see what her background really is. She may have made premature judgments but to accuse her of negligence is irresponsible and irrational.

Show me some proof Susan Rice isn't qualified. She has the background in diplomacy that none of us here have.

Why is it inexplicably partisan and wrongheaded? John Kerry has worked in various committees in the Senate and has worked with republicans on matters. He is not a partisan. He's a technocrat and has significant expertise.

Deval Patrick has not decided yet whether he wants the Dept of State or The Dept Of Justice.

Brown will easily win the governorship when he vacates office. I can't think of any state dem with a big enough ground game to beat him in a special election.

That leaves Kerry's seat to Ted Kennedy Jr. with no GOP opposition,

So both parties are getting fed red meat in Massachusetts as this new administration comes in, and Massachusetts has designs on cabinet power.

Rice will not beat the Political machine of Boston. It just won't happen.

New England is desperate to shake up both parties and get them back into the common sense zone.

If Rice becomes Sec of state, then Brown will not get his governors seat.

Patrick as Secretary of State would definitely be a surprise announcement.

if not AG, I've heard buzz about him running for the Senate seat if Kerry were to get a Cabinet seat... he's already announced that he's not running for reelection as Gov, so I assume a move to Washington is in order in any event.

he's pretty young, he could probably have a long career in Washington as a progressive Senator.

based on the "second term curse," I'm not sure I'd want to be a legal officer in the second term of any Presidency Watergate, Iran Contra, Monica Lewinsky, Valerie Plame...

What did Henry the second say to about his friend, St Thomas? Will someone not rid me of this meddlesome priest? The only reason Obama would have of sending Rice out as Sec of State is to humiliate her and force her into retirement, and then use her dead carcass as a martyr for the cause.

Obama tends to not be that Machiavellian. Long game politics is his stock and trade I will admit, but not that far.

Sec of state is either going to be Patrick or Kerrey. It's what Mass gets for putting Warren in her Senate office for the president.

Deval Patrick just announced that he was not interested in being Attorney General of the USA in an interview.

I think we are going to see a Deval Patrick Sec of State, a Kerrey Dept of Deffense, Rice will stay where she is, CIA Will go to Morrell. He's a good man. An Economist and a data analyst. I love it when things all turn out nice and tidy. Oh and that asshat at the FBI is going to just squat there like a Hill billy on the side of the highway. He's not going anywhere.

I like Patrick... but is he actually qualified to be Secretary of State?

he doesn't seem like he has a resume that's left him well-versed in international politics, diplomacy, and whatnot. (much as I may not really like Kerry, he is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations at least... hell, even Sarah Palin could at least see Russia from her front yard )

That looks good to me... but the part of Deval Patrick is really surprising to me. I really haven't heard about him being in the line-up... but it's possible. Morrell is probably the optimal pick as isn't he already working in the CIA? I'm glad Obama is opting for technocrats though... but we'll have to see.

He was approved unanimously by congress to be asst AG or some such job in Justice... That MAY lead him to the road of defense instead, but it's clear that he is liked by the congress and voted to approve him in the past. Also remember that the far left blames Berman for the Meningitis outbreak, so they will team up with the GOP to take him down.

And then there's Donelon.... Do you really think the Senate GOP is going to go for the national security advisor during the Bhenghazi faux scandal?

I think the Pickins are getting slim, and one way or the other Kerrey and Patrick are going to be in this administration. Kerry needs to quit first, though, because Patrick Needs to appoint an interim senator to run unopposed on the Dem side.

Morrell is a career CIA man. His specialty is pacific Asian and latin America. He was the man sent to the Whitehouse to brief Presidents Clinton and Bush daily. He is very familliar with the halls of the white house, How to negotiate them without much notice, and he has inner agency support.

He is one of the Ghosts in the machine that outlive presidencies.

It's funny because I remember hearing on NPR that Patrick would be a good AG. I just don't see how he could be a Sec of State or defense.

It seems also that Patrick strongly wants Kerry to stay in the senate so we don't end up with Brown back in the Senate which most pundits view as an inevitability.

John McCain has pledged to stop Rice at all costs:

[John McCain is convinced that U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice is part of a massive cover-up over the Benghazi embassy attack and is launching a preemptive campaign to keep her from becoming Secretary of State. After saying last night that he would do "everything I can" to block Rice's nomination (which hasn't even happened yet), on Wednesday McCain repeated those comments on CBS This Morning, Fox News, and during an appearance at the Washington Ideas Forum (which is sponsored by The Atlantic.) McCain is telling anyone who will listen that Rice is not qualified to be the chief U.S. diplomat and that he believes she intentionally misled people about what the government knew about the attack.
    http://news.yahoo.com/john-mccain-pl...170401707.html

Obama reiterated his support for her:

President Barack Obama bluntly told Sen. John McCain and other Republicans to lay off their attacks against U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice over the Benghazi assault, telling lawmakers that if they go after her "then you have a problem with me." And Obama, speaking at his first postelection press conference, vowed that Republican opposition would not dissuade him from nominating Rice to replace departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/l...-election.html

Is this throwing her to the meat grinder -- or a supremely confident Obama?

    McCain is many things.

    As we all are.

Calling him a liar is like calling Obama a socialist

    its not necessary and baseless.

Obama putting her up is fucked up and he's looking for a real (and unnecessary) or faux political fight.

    She's damaged goods.

His re-election campaign's cynical focus appears to be bleeding into his governance.

    a pity

What is ridiculous is the right wing morons buying the idea that election and campaign spin to try and catch Obama in a scandal before the vote would somehow become a deciding factor.

I suppose the republicans would be calling for the head of the CIA to resign over this although that is mute now that he is now out of a job for getting his dick wet. Patraeus said the exact same thing to congress because that was what the cia was briefing the white house and the Ambassador.

I find this weak kneed attacks on surrogates to be a disturbing ploy used by both sides when they are angry and embrarassed at having their asses handed to them by the guy they cant touch-- Obama. You know I didn't vote for McCain for a variety of reasons but the 62 year old working with me at the time who served as McCain's plane captain when he was flying said he was a asshole. I trust that guy over anything that comes out of the voices of conservative reason here on JUB. McCain is a partisan hack who will do this nation a great deal of good when he retires.

Patraeus briefed the Senate Intel Committee and the house for that matter... after they first briefed the four corners.... which is the majority and minority leads on national security in each house. He said exactly the same thing.

Right wingers on here refuse to believe that riots sprung up anywhere because of that video... but they are wrong there. What is funny are people not in the know making knowing predictions on what occurred and who was briefed all with a political bent. It is sickening and beneath those posters but it is also lock stock and barrel all they offer.

I don't want to hear anything about that.

If he can't respect himself enough to tell the truth, then he isn't worth my time either. As Jayhawk has stated, the reports intell gave the diplomatic corps would have gone to the four corners first, if not at the same time. It's just the way things are done. McCain is playing a game with classified documents, and that is dishonorable and puts people's lives in danger.

    Why would he do that?

    Grudge fuck Obama.

No... The man is pathetic and unfit to even be remembered as a man in uniform. He sold his soul a long time ago to the same machine that just stole Romney's.

If you have to become what you hate to win, it's not worth winning. McCain has spent so much time in the GOP warshington bubble, that he has forgotten what a soldiers honor is.

OBAMA, LEAVE SEN. JOHN KERRY WHERE HE IS!!!!!!

With balance in the Senate being so important and so precarious, WHY in the hell are people always being "stolen" from the Senate for other positions (or for Presidential campaigns)?

Both political Parties do this rampantly and I'll never understand it.

can you translate that out of fluffy bubble haiku so that I can tell what the hell you are trying to say?

Clearly you have no idea how the gov't branches recieve intell or this would be all crap.

How about we let Ms Rice speak clearly ....

RICE: But when things are unfolding very, very quickly, it’s not always easy to know what is really going on on the ground. And to my mind, the really important questions here are about how information was collected. Did the various agencies really coordinate and share intelligence in the way that we had hoped, with the reforms that were made after 9/11?
So there’s a big picture to be examined here. But we don’t have all of the pieces, and I think it’s easy to try and jump to conclusions about what might have happened here. It’s probably better to let the relevant bodies do their work.
    and then....

Throughout the interview, Rice highlighted the difficulty that comes in a “fog of war” situation, with multiple stories coming in which need to be processed and verified. Her statements strongly align with the evolution of the Obama administration’s understanding of what happened in Benghazi. Rice also joined current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in dismissing the big picture importance of the emails from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, as a small portion of the overall communication between the mission and the State Department.

It is useless BP. The right is stuck on stupid. After having their asses handed to them for saying and then doubling down on stupid false information they are now stuck on that same framework irt Susan Rice. Senate had the exact same intelligence but dont ever think the lying pieces of shit in McCain or Graham will own up to that in the public eye. Cowardice and avoiding the truth is how the republican party intends to heal its brand. I listened to Bill OReilly last night for about ten minutes while he railed on the MSM and how they are just projecting false information. Last i checked that was Fox pushing false polls and false predictions. It isd really amusing to watch them try to spin their way out of irrelevance.

Yes, I'm sure it was John McCain's fault that he got shot down and spent years in an enemy prison camp. It's fair to disagree about his politics, but his service to this country was honorable. Attacking that service is disgraceful.

The video had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Benghazi and for two weeks at least was the primary spin. You guys are stuck on disingenuous, intellectual dishonesty and frankly you're beyond feeling any empathy for. If you are going to hold Republicans feet to the fire better well treat Democrats in the same way and you're completely, nakedly partisan hypocrisy on that score speaks volumes. I respect those with political differences but won't be lectured by people who feel accountability only apply to the GOP's indiscretions... Jay, BP,anyone here still holding on the left flank sorry but YOU'RE the blindfully ignorant on this. Intelligence doesn't make up for a complete lack of common sense here and sanctimonious , selective moralizing! We could discuss all the crap from the Administration but you're not in the least bit interested in having a discussion...you do exactly what the Benvolio types do and spin things from your side and nowhere else. I wonder say Hawk if you could have handled being tortured or imprisoned for five and a half years like Senator Mc Cain.... been the son of the head of the Pacific Fleet and refused any chance to come home early by remaining unwillling to bend to his North Vietnamese captors. Your insult to his service speaks ill of someone I once respected as truly an honest and independent conservative but unfortunately that is no longer the case. One doesn't need to defend the excesses of FOX to demand the truth from ALL of our political leadership and there are a few examples n the media of independent thought, of real journalism that doesn't necessarily dispute much of what is coming from FOX on this. A shame you're all SO certain of yourselves but you make your bed with the Obama Administration here, you lay in it!

It's evident Sausy isn't going to listen to common sense or reason here... there is no disingenuous intellectual dishonesty. People here provide evidence for their arguments. Where is your evidence? This has nothing to do with spin. We aren't spinning anything. McCain lost his reasoning skills years ago... one has to pity him. And that last post... making everything personal shows their is no proof for your argument... and now must resort to character attacks and strawmans.

Evidence!? She fucking lied on five news programs. What more evidence is required? And the plural of strawman is strawmen.
