    Permitting pot

I presume everyone knows that Colorado and Washington approved the recreational use of marijuana this election. Now, since prohibition of anything people want results in increased crime, there's an expectation that crime rates will drop noticeably in the two states.

I suspect that this result will make more states look at doing the same thing. A reduction in crime saves money for people and government both, and at present those are big attractors.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

The gains will come later as each state is going to slowly roll out the new rules. While they wait to see what the fed will do....

Any who show up to interfere should be arrested and held without bail. This is a clear constitutional matter: states and people trump the feds unless there is a specific enumerated power granted to the fedgov.

I'll venture that one of the first effects will be a drop in the street price of pot. If it's okay to possess, then people can grow their own in small amounts, thus increasing the supply.

Do you really think that Mexico and the Mexican cartels will sit by and let pot become legal in the USA?

They will not give up easily.

Ummm... it is already becoming legal... 16 states for medical which simply requires that you declare yourself not always hungry or having mysterious back pain.... and now it is legal in two states simply out right with no myth of medical use....

So since you have made an outrageous statement what do you suggest will be their course of action?

This is the sort of silly 'plot line' I'd expect from a comic book. I have to ditto JH's question -- what is it you think they'll do?

If half the states decriminalized it, the price would plunge. If the price plunged, the cartels wouldn't be able to afford their arsenals and troops.

The fallback from the feds will be the Interstate Commerce Clause. You can easily grow pot in one state and transport it to another for sale. Whether that is actually the case or not is irrelevant pursuant to some case law from the '30's about grain price controls.

Still, these were both very good laws passed by people taking power away from government. You may very well see a couple of people getting busted for weed and then some very needed jury nullification at trial. Freedom won a few small victories this go round.

    Re: Permitting pot

Commerce may come later but for now with just a state and each isolated and surrounded by states that do not allow legal marijuana this wont be an issue it will just be called illegal drug smuggling. I think there is a great deal of pressure on each state to try and keep the legal in their borders which will be damn near impossible. I do expect to see a bunch of novice 'dealers' trying to set up sell businesses outside of the legal states and get nabbed rather quickly.

On a different note welcome back Jack. I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. Haven't heard from you since Sandy it seems like.

These were not "laws passed by people taking power away from government." This was "people directing the power of government differently." People are the government in a democracy.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

It remains to be seen whether this is a good idea. There is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction that the opposite of prohibition is moderate, sensible use.

For example Russia has no prohibition on alcohol, and no responsible alcohol use. It's a bit of a drunken basket-case.

Your silly response that the cartels would give-up the billions of dollars they make off the goons in the US who use drugs is pretty darn stupid.

Terrorists who team with the cartels would also give up their money stream. That's not gonna happen easy either.

You sound too exited by the prospect of cheaper drugs.

It's about time for the "we think you could be capable of committing a crime" refrain to be grounds for calling something criminal to die. This is a good opportunity.

Like Romney, all you have is empty platitudes.

What will the cartels do -- send in ten thousand hit squads? The economics of the situation negates that as an option, besides the logistical impossibility. Not even the US government could shut down alcohol during Prohibition, so there's no way at all that the cartels would be able to make even a dent.

I guess only Jack understands the tie between legal weed and Armageddon - you'll be singing a different song (very slowly and off key) when Medellin comes for your bud.

Colorado and Washington grow a lot of their own weed now. This will just mean they can do it a bit more openly.

Now, if California decriminalized, I think the Mexican gangs might get concerned.
