If you want equal opportunity, the GOP is not the place to look. On the evidence, their goal is a system where econbomic status is locked in so those on the top don't have to worry about competition from anyone with creativity and drive.


But I'll note that at this point, the LCR may finally be a valuable organization: of the places where the GOP needs to change, the gay issues are the most likely place for them to give ground, and it helps to have a voice within their system to which they can speak instead of having to admit the opposition was right. Having the LCR around will let them save some face in the process of making a turn in policy.

What has the GOP for gay rights in past 25 years?

The Log Cabin Republicans inception was due to the opposition of several anti- gay initiatives in California by gay Republicans who wanted to see the GOP not fall into the hands of the religious right. They are one of the few remaining defenders of individual liberties in the GOP and the spirit of Abraham Lincoln Republicanism from which their name derives, the "Log Cabin" which Lincoln famously reputed lived his early years and which sadly Republicans aren't upholding these days. If one wants to talk about GoPROUD ,the group that broke away from the Log Cabins who were seen as too moderate and "Establishment" and who de-emphasizes the importance of gay rights legislation compared to enacting a conservative Republican agenda, go ahead,rip on em to shreds. They believe gay conservatives should strongly support "conservative" candidates who will uphold a right wing "constitutional" agenda and are nowhere to be found fighting for the rights of their fellow gay brothers and sisters to live as first class citizens equal under the law. They are the gay Republicans for which I have contempt. I won't however mock or deride in any way the Log Cabin Republicans who stand for the principles their party originally fought for. I don't think much of the small minded people who think otherwise and enjoy having sport with them... they would sure make for lousy statesmen with their own blatant partisanship. I don't forget the Log Cabin Republicans did a lot of heaving lifting fighting DADT in our military and DOMA.... FAR more strongly involved than President Obama,actually. They battled in the trenches...he led from behind. But gets the credit nonetheless because his outsize reputation is far more imposing than his actual accomplishments are impressive.

If that is the case why are they supporting candidates like Mitt Romney? Individual liberties? They aren't the defenders of individual liberty. They just cozy up with social conservatives because they don't want to be kicked out of the republican party. LCR has gone down the same road as GOProud and that endorsement statement quite clearly proves they have lost all common sense.

I see this claim a lot and frankly I don't see a shred of proof for it. They never battled in the trenches. They are too busy trying to be republicans and trying to justify that to other republicans that don't really like them. Most of the credit for the lifting of DADT and potential future repeal of DOMA goes to liberal activists, not LCR.

LCR made the fatal mistake of thinking that their endorsement mattered a rat's ass to anyone...including Romney.

They could have sat this one out, but like a lot of other naive Republicans, they obviously wanted to believe what they were being told...that Romney had a chance.

I'll bet they had already started planning being invited to the inaugural ball and what they would wear.

How sad.

And now, in just about one fell swoop, they are no longer relevant to anyone on any issue. The Republicans see that the homos didn't vote for them....because they offered no reason for any self-respecting homo to do this....and unless LCR starts getting really vocal about DOMA at the risk of pissing off the talibangelical power base....they have just been consigned to the hinterland for the next four years.

If they had not endorsed any candidate...but remained vocal about the need for the Republican party to make room in the tent for the homos...they would be looking pretty good right now.

I respectfully disagree, Sausy. The Log Cabin Republicans do not stand for the "original principles of the Republican party" when they still choose to endorse candidates that are a flagrant violation of what they claim to stand for. They have no integrity, nor part of the greater history that will become our civil rights era.

As for DADT, the Log Cabin Republicans were leading a good court fight against the measure on a judicial level. However, it was a redundant gesture because the Obama Administration and a Democrat led Congress was already in the process of repealing it from a legislative level. DADT ended under the signed pen of President Barack Obama.

If the LCR wanted to have an impact, they should quietly organize a whole string of Christian clergy, as far to the right as they can find, who aren't anti-gay because they understand that government marriage has nothing to do with God and that Jesus never, ever said, "Go therefore and pass laws....", then all show up at the next convention to do sit-ins at the platform committee and marches on the floor.

I'd even join them as a former Republican turned Libertarian because the GOP moved and left me.
