What would be your reaction/how would you be affected if there was a worldwide blackout?

I'd be devastated, because I do not think I could function without my laptop. I have planner that's on the computer and I check it frequently to find out what I should be doing at a specific time of the day. I know for a fact that I wouldn't be able to get to school because there would be probably no transportation on that day and I'd have a very miserable time.

My reaction summed up in a pic.

Yes it's scary when it happens, especially at night. It'd like being thrust back into medieval days or The Hobbit.

We go out into the street and speak to neighbours we normally avoid.

Several years ago, my street was without power for three days. One day, while shaving by candlelight, I could see that a neighbor across the alley (and, therefore, dependent on a different station) was watching his big screen TV. My first thought was, "I now understand the French Revolution!"

A blackout (with no destruction - like Sandy) can be fun! I was part of the massive blackout in 2004 (I think it was '04? it was in August). The whole city was out for a few days (and it was over a weekend thankfully). Once it got to the point that food in the freezer was going to go bad, neighbours had a huge parking lot party and bbq, and everyone brought all their meat that was going to go bad and we cooked it all and drank cocktails all evening. It was SUCH a memorable experience - so fun and surreal to be right in the heart of downtown and there are NO lights. And a GREAT way to meet a ton of new people!

Now, there was another time I was without power for about the same amount of time - the 1998 ice storm. Now that was BAD, and NOT fun because it was FUCKING cold lol

I'd be able to survive without computers very easily. I grew up without microwave ovens, cellphones, or computers.

Cotton, people like us read a lot---reams and reams of books. If I got bored enough, I read the encyclopedia.

On top of this, I didn't learn to drive until I was 28. I'd either take the bus or I'd walk.

I'd light candles and talk to the neighbors. It would be alright for about half a day and then I would get bored. If it was in the winter, the cold would get unbearable real soon.

Been on a long blackout during a deluge twice, once when I was eight, and the other about 5 years ago. We survived pretty well. The only thing we were concerned about was whether the food in the fridge would rot first before the power came.

So yeah, I would start listing who I would eat first

I can deal with just the loss of power easily enough... but the inability to get news once my cellphone died felt really isolating.

I ended up camped out in my car to charge my phone, but even that was just burning gas that's hard to come by in an extended blackout like we experienced.

so I picked up a $40 handcrank + solar AM/FM radio with a USB port that can be used to charge a phone.

So all of you with generators and wind-up toys and solar panels... what are you going to connect to? Remember, it's a worldwide blackout. No internet, no cable, no TV signals, no radio signals, no cellular signals. No electricity anywhere in the world. If you had your own source of electricity, you could listen to CDs or your iPod, play video games, refrigerate your food... but you'd be completely cut off from all communication more complex than leaning out your window and yelling.

Then what do you do? I would enjoy the silence... until an airplane landed on my house because the airport didn't have any electricity and the radio control tower couldn't broadcast.

true, if you're talking about a worldwide, post-apocalyptic type blackout, the vast majority of us would pretty well be fucked... my only real saving graces are that I know how to fish and brew alcohol. hopefully I'd have some value to whatever Mad Max overlord rises to power.

    Break out the Anti-Zombie Spray!

I actually try NOT to think about when this might happen.

One well placed Electro-Magnetic Pulse, either natural or man made, would put us back into the 1800-1900's in an instant.
Everything is computerized now days, from cars, tractors, phones, communication networks, banking... You name it... and we're all so dependent and reliant on computers today's generation wouldn't have a clue how to do things without them. My job is about 20 miles away. I couldn't even really bike to work if I had to daily, and everything there from office stuff, to heavy machinery is run by some kind of computer.
