    Post-Sandy head count

Have all Jubsters in the path of the storm been accounted for now? Fuji and a few other famous names have made contact, is anyone still missing?
And I've just noticed that Sloppy2nds is back after a week's absence. Didn't anyone miss the poor bugger?

If we haven’t heard from them by now, Essex Boy, I’m afraid Sandy’s snatch has them.

Like little Ping-Pong balls at a burlesque show, she picked them up with her sticky wet cunt, and they’ve decided to forgo the yellow brick road until they’ve all had their fill of hot munchkin butt sex.

For now, let’s just hope the being gang-raped by flying monkeys is a lot more fun than any of us could ever imagine.

FPNY has abandoned his house that has no power, heat or water. I'm alive at my sisters in upstate NY. They are saying no power until Wednesday but another storm is headed our way for Wednesday. I'm alive, but very very cranky.

I'm here. Know plenty who have been affected, but fortunately, my neighborhood was spared. Dealing with Manhattan on a day to day basis has been tough, but at least most of the power is back, and I finally have a train in my area that is running into the city.

I haven't seen Lucky around this forum, but he seems to be fine.

I have power, went back to work, and life has pretty much returned to normal (whatever that is...)

Collating this thread with the other thread, and also checking last post dates, I've confirmed that everyone (or at least everyone mentioned by name) has been accounted for....

....except for Criostoir, last visit October 27th, and we won't hear from him in this thread, because for some unexplained reason he's gone and abandoned the Hot Topics forum entirely. Anyway, it shouldn't be an immediate cause for concern because his postings have become very infrequent in recent months.

No headache, but our dog went berserk when the low pressure system came through. He was pacing and whining and shaking his head like his ears were bothering him. This went on for like thirty minutes, then he laid down and went to sleep like nothing happened.

I'm back in Jersey with power, heat, and internet

we lost power a week ago Monday. Tuesday, the roads were closed down and I just sat at home in the cold/dark (and doing some cleanup outside). went to work on Wednesday, and then afterword, drove up to Portland, Maine with a friend to ride out the Sandy aftermath.

power was restored Saturday afternoon, and we drove back Sunday night. it was pretty convenient that I already had the vacation scheduled, we just started it a few days early so we could get out of dodge once I was cleared with work.

Even though I am way over here in Ohio....I lost power and heat, for three days. All day Tues thru almost all day Thursday. Spoke to someone at the store the other day, and she said they STILL had no power. (she had to move in with relatives since the storm, while waiting for power to come back).

damn, ya got hit over there too? i feel your pain, man. that storm really kicked the east coast ass especially out here in jersey. from some of the images on the news, the jersey shore really did get hit as bad as they say it did. heard that the boardwalk and amusement park in seaside heights is dead and gone.

I wish i had thought of checking out the marina here (on Lake Erie) ....I never thought of going there to see the destruction, and take pictures....It's too late now, probably cleaned up. But I heard from a co-worker (who has a boat) that even though their boat was fine, about half the other boats there were destroyed and/or tossed ON TOP OF eachother!

judging from this, wouldn't be surprised at all. the housing and the structures are completely damaged BUT i hope nobody died over there though. there was some rumor floating around about 23 bodies over there. the police are denying it though.

Beat me to it John B....

New Amsterdam needs to build some deflecting and sluicing barriers that Amsterdam built after they got their wake up call.

Seems like everyone I remember from over there is back up and posting.... If there is a bright silver lining to the storms I will let ya know that Kansas City experienced a wonderful week following the storm because of the high pressure bringing warmer air from the south.

What i find alarming post Katrina is that those folks would hunker down and wait to die in places that are literally a few feet above sea level. Have people no sense? Hurricane coming = leave.

was thinking the same exact thing. terrible indeed.

nevermind but i pretty much have a lot to say about this shit. this is only just some of the shit going on but it needs to get put outthere so there's a lot of misinformation and things not being said.

the power went out at 8 last monday. it sucked that the power went out. it was somewhat managable UNTIL the cold front came in and fucked everything up. it was cold as hell. life SUCKS without electricity. despite having no light and relying on the daylight, i managed to get some hours of studying in for the lsat, read a bit of the outing yourself book, got my exercise on via walking all the way down south orange to starbucks to charge my cell, ipod and laptop (was able to get on the internet for some hours) and to the park. i also managed to strike some conversations with two people some days of each other where one was a obama supporter and the other was a romney supporter while i was out walking around. needless to say, it was very interesting to see what both of them had to say but they both were cool as hell though. even though they both had some nice things to say about their presidential hopefuls and not so nice things to say about the other party and candidates, they both agreed that if the rival candidate wins that this country will go to total shit. *shrugs*

as for what's happening now around here, i learned some things from this though. not going to go through all that BUT one thing i would like to get outthere is don't believe everything you read or hear. in fact, the corruption that new jersey is notoriously known for was and still is at work. if you were to see the news, you would think that we were going through katrina or something for the entire state. you would also think that there is a huge effort going on to restore power and whatever else. i dunno about south jersey, last time i heard, south jersey had more places with powers than up north did at least around here. the damage up north wasn't that bad. considering that, pse&g (the light company) was doing a whole lot of flipflopping to the point where it was fucking ridiculous. some parts of towns had power while other parts didn't. even now, some places are out in darkness still. hell, last night on my block, my neighbors on the corner across the street had power while we out in darkness. in fact, last week and even up til the past weekend, pse&g crews were just driving around chilling doing absolutely NOTHING (the word going around is that they were trying to rack up on overtime). the town department of works was about to start doing their own thing but pse&g told them not to.

then you have the whole oil situation where people are standing in lines and cars are literally waiting for miles for gas. on the first days, gas stations were shut down and then they opened up. gas stations were raising the prices too on purpose. gas stations that were 3.59 before the storm all of a sudden some days later went to 4 bucks. i've heard new york doing something about it but obviously nothing's being done in jersey. nobody seems to give a fuck anyway and to make matters worse, these gas stations have store attendants pumping the gas so they're basically profitting off of the situation.

whatever chris christie's doing, he's basically putting on a show since it's his golden opportunity to use this to run for the 2016 presidential election. christie was being coached already and if it isn't more obvious then, then it is now. hell, it best benefits him and obama. all the attention on romney has died out and now obama is getting the limelight. this is why i'm saying that obama pretty much is winning the election tomorrow (you know how the story is). i think new jersey is going to have a lot to do with that shit too. but back to what i'm saying, a lot of the shit that's going on in jersey with the whole disaster relief is fucking politics. you have the power companies bullshitting, the gas companies bullshitting and in the middle of it all, you have chris christie who is doing a terrible job of controlling the situation trying to milk this shit to move up the ladder.

don't be surprise if 4 years from now christie ends up becoming the president. he's already positioning himself. the next 4 years are going to be crazy though.

    Re: Post-Sandy head count

Just got power back today after a week, live on the West Side area in Jersey City...lots of substations were badly damaged not only through flooding but wind damage knocked down a good number of utility poles and trees to make things worse. Not sure how much of the vaunted New Jersey corruption(Hudson County gets a gold star in that department, where I live btw)factored into the long recovery effort but there was lots of real damage out there. City curfew for vehicles and pedestrians after sunset just lifted tonight, thankfully as most(but not yet all) of the city has power restored. One problem that will absolutely take time to remedy is our PATH train service to Newark and to the World Trade Center will not resume until structural damage to our substations there are fixed and all signals are working for thee trains to navigate through successfully. There was record flooding of some stations in lower Manhattan, Hoboken and Exchange Place here in Jersey City and those stations will take time to be reopened for regular service. Our buses are running pretty much as scheduled though our light rail is just expected to come back on line this week. Thankfully PATH trains from Journal Square to 33rd Street in Mahattan will resume tomorrow morning and run until further notice from 5am to 10pm on a regular basis daily. That after all that flooding we should get back to that level of seervice is a testament to the workers in the PATH system clearing out millions of gallons of river water and fixing what often is corrosive salt water structural damage to our system and great credit to them....I know in relatively short order the system will be back fully online for the tens of thousands of straphangers riding daily.

Glad to hear loki reporting back as getting through his ordal in Hoboken just fine after the initial harrowing events but still concerned about our other Hobokener, croistior who has been discussed by several others here. Just hoping he can check in soon as Hoboken is slowly recovering from its terrible flooding and damage and maybe he just doesn't have internet access as of yet.

The shore got pounded last year by Hurricane Irene but this just devastated much of the recovery effort in the meantime. Some of the saddest sights in this whole damn Sandy mess is that devastation wrought on our shore communities from the Jersey Shore to the coastal areas of NYC and Long Island...words just can't express the utter loss and unfathomability of the scale. Thoughts and prayers to all those impacted so directly by Sandy's wrath.

    Re: Post-Sandy head count

    my experience wasn't terrible.

I lost power Monday, late afternoon... that night, it was still novel and fun. I was prepared; unfortunately, my elderly landlady who lives in the other apartment in this 2-family house was not. I ended up giving her my only flashlight, so she wouldn't be in the dark. Monday night was spent cooking dinner by candlelight, reading comics, and texting away on my phone with the assumption that power would be back on by morning.

Tuesday was rough. called out of work, since all the roads leading out of my area were all closed. kept busy during the afternoon by cleaning up outside the house, but my phone started dying and my inability to get news was pretty troubling (this is also when I learned that, despite the fact that my little AM/FM radio takes batteries, it only works when plugged in and receiving ac power)... I ended up spending most of Tuesday night in my car, with the heat blasting, news playing on the radio, and my cellphone charging.

Wednesday was my fuck-it day. I was finally able to get into work, which was kinda nice (internet, heat, a place to charge my various devices, and my company really went above and beyond by providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner for everyone in the office). I was originally supposed to go away on vacation with a friend that Friday, but we decided to leave Wednesday night instead just to get out of Jersey sooner (and damn the extra money). thank god I had enough gas to make it from my office to Hartford, CT (which seemed more or less unaffected by the storm... I was able to get gas with no lines and stock up on groceries)

came back Sunday night to find power had been restored (and spent most of today doing dishes/laundry from the blackout and cleaning out my fridge).

    lessons learned:

-prepare with the expectation that I might not just have myself to worry about. I'm probably going to go out and buy like 5 LED flashlights (a flashlight for myself, 2 lanterns to light various rooms, and 2 others as backups or to lend out). I was also wishing I had more non-perishable food that didn't require cooking/prep (canned soup, dry cereal, pretzels... maybe even a whole salami, those things can last for years without refrigeration if they're cured right)

-news is critical... I'm going to invest in a hand-crank radio and a computer UPS (which can only support a full-on computer for a few minutes, but it should last for days if I'm just using it to keep my cellphone charged)

-gas, gas, gas. my ass was saved because my tank just happened to be full before this shit started. in the future, I'm going to be more concerned with getting my tank filled before any potential major storm.

Glad you're experience wasn't too terrible,loki...like most of us not caught directly in the flooding or wind driven damage itwas lots of darkness and just doing stuff to get by until power comes back. Fortunately you had that trip coming and you had your tank full, so you could escape all this for a few days and get restocked and refueled. Just heard so much of Hoboken was flooded, so much damage and wasn't sure what part of the city you live in. Absolutely right about the lessons learned, though as one who doesn't drive it is admittedly convenient to have the car battery chargers available for cellphone recharging. Thankfully bus service downtown to the Newport Mall so my brother and I could charge our phones in their Food Court....he works at Sears and also could charge it there. PSE&G also opened a charge station for cell phones and devices as well as MRE(military style meals) and ice along with water and other needed supplies were provided in our neighborhood. Anyway, just glad your experience was not too bad.

    Re: Post-Sandy head count

My power went out overnite on Monday. It had flickered a bit Monday nite, when i got home from work...and I thought I was safe when I went to bed WITH power.....but, guess not. I had hot water for showers, here in my apartment, but since there was no electricity to turn on the thermostat, there was no heat thru the radiators. I had three little push button battery operated LED lights luckily, which have been a godsend when I have had brief power outages before. So, I just ended up going to bed early each nite, even though out of those three days, I only had to work/get up early for work, one of those days. I ended up finally getting around to reading a book I bought THREE years ago ("The Time Traveler's Wife"...almost done with it. Awesome book..afraid to see the watered down movie version).
From a sociological perspective (have a degree, never used it) it was interesting to see just how connected everyone has to be to the internet/technology these days. I got a kick out of going to the coffee shops and seeing just how many people were waiting to....who HAD to...(like me ) sit around and wait for a plug to be free so as to power up their phones and such. If this had happened 15 years ago, even less, most people would just stay at home, read a book, play board games, etc.... But in the 21st century we all were desperate to "stay connected" to the outside world/internet. The libraries and small restaurants and coffee shops were PACKED. It was cool to talk to these strangers, who all had this power outage in common, and hear their stories. Most people were relatively polite to eachother, and would unplug to let someone else plug, after about an hour or two, so that everyone had a turn. (60 people in a coffee shop, and only 10 plugs at the most equaled long lines, lol)
...One funny incident was when I when to a late nite restaurant, sat next to a plug, and finished recharging my one little phone. A guy came in, sat nearby, and asked if he could use the plug opening above mine. "No problem" I said. ...He took off his backpack, ..pulled out a power strip.....then pulled out a SECOND power strip....connected one to the other, then the remaining part into the plug underneath my table. THEN he pulls out a laptop computer. A bluetooth. A cellphone. And a tablet.....and proceeds to plug aaaalllll of those items in to the powerstrips before going over to his table to eat. I had to be careful with my feet, and make sure I did not kick any of them..lol

Anyway, just glad your experience was not too bad.
it's crazy how PSE&G is helping you guys outthere BUT they can't do the same thing in townships like maplewood, irvington, union, springfield and etc. it's fucked up. you can't even call them because they'll just give an automated response. i was fortunate to be next to a town that had light and had a starbucks where i could go on the internet to find out what was going on. there are towns over here that have no places that have power or anywhere where they can get info. the radio doesn't even provide information needed. 1010 wins for the most part was focused on what's happening in new york. the only info that was going on in new jersey was about the gas station/license plates bullshit and chris christie talking about power companies from out of state coming to help. ridiculous. some of my people living in the affected areas STILL have no power and are being told that they're not going to get any by the next week. this is terrible.

one thing that i know for sure is that i most definitely am thinking about moving the hell out of new jersey. last year was another drama with irene where our township and others nearby were on "water restrictions" while other towns within the area could use their water. now it's this bullshit. some of these townships actually have like 30 people without power while others have like 1,000 or more. they're slacking.

Newark had power before anyone else... I'm not sure I'd really read much into it.

given how much money PSE&G must be losing every day the power is out (no power = no electric usage), I'll take them at their word that they're doing everything they can as quickly as possible. I assume that different places have different issues, which take different amounts of time to fix. if power is out in one area because the station flooded, that's going to come back faster than an area that's dark because the station flooded, the substation flooded, and a half dozen powerlines are down.

my friend down in central Jersey was one of the last people I know to get power restored, and she lives in an extremely upper-class neighborhood (a few houses down from a former Governor)

    SOME GREAT NEWS HERE!!!

I can confirm that Criostoir is INDEED ALIVE, WELL, AND OK. Some of us were worried because Hoboken was half-flooded, but apparently he missed that. He was without power for about a week, though.

There hasn't been a word (I use the term in the loosest sense) from Sloppyseconds for ten days now. Does anyone know his whereabouts? He went quiet for a week when the storm hit, so I presume he was affected. Maybe he's not everyone's cup of tea but he is family when all's said and done.

Yes, I am OK. Yes, I lost power for a week. Yes, my posts have been infrequent. By the time I got the PM here this thread had vanished into the back pages!

Hoboken has not finished recovering, and won't for months. Biden was just looking at the damage. My building is OK, but many others have lost everything. A local food pantry was completely wiped out...but donations put it back in "business" within a few days.

I opined halfway through the first week that they had to have been screening the National Guard guys for looks before sending them to Hoboken. I didn't see any that were even close to ugly, and some of them were Very Much Not Ugly, if you receive my meaning!
