There has been a lot of talk about ideas and which candidate's ideas are better for the individual and for the country. Well it's time to prove that these ideas actually benefit you and your interests.
The rules of the "On-Topic" thread are:
1. Describe how your political party and/or its elected official enacted a policy that directly benefited your life. It cannot be a hypothetical example, nor a benefit beyond yourself, your spouse, or children. Friends, parents, and relatives do not count.
2. NO negative examples criticizing another elected official or political party instead of listing your own positive benefits. This is not a partisan bash thread.
The rationale of this thread is to demonstrate how your politics are directly benefiting you. This can mean added wealth, improved rights and freedoms, or increased opportunities that have helped shape the success in your life. Be specific.
As a registered Democrat, the policies of my party have had a direct impact and benefit to some of the most important years of my life.
1. My job during the Great Recession:
I graduated and finished school at the onset of the Great Recession. When I entered the job market related to my field, there were no jobs in my area and I was tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. Fortunately, I was hired within a few months. However, the economy got worse just as Obama was assuming office. Thankfully, President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (aka the stimulus) injected hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy, including funding that went into my field. Because of the stimulus bill, my employment was able to maintain its budget for a couple of years as the economy recovered. Once the stimulus money dried up, however, budget cuts began to happen. I received my pink slip that year along with over 100 other employees. Thankfully, most of us were hired on shortly afterwards and I had enough seniority built up from the first couple years of the stimulus, to keep my job.
If there was no Stimulus bill, I would not have my job right now. Everything that I have built my life up to: my own place, my new car, and the experiences I've had, would never have happened. I have a career thanks to President Obama, and I am deeply grateful for that.
2. Tax Cuts
Under the Obama administration, I received the "Making Work Pay" tax credit for the 2009, 2010 year in the amount of $400 each. Currently, I am benefiting from the payroll tax cut that reduces that deduction by 2%.
3. Marriage Equality
In my state, our Democratic governor and majority Democratic legislature passed a bill that would grant full marriage equality to all gay and lesbian couples in my state. It has been put on referendum by members of the Republican party; however, with the full push and support of the Democratic party, it is likely to prevail. After this election, I could very likely have the right to marry the man I fall in love with and begin to build a family with all the legal protections and benefits of a married couple.
As you can see, I've listed three, direct benefits of how my political party has changed my life for the better. These are actual, tangible benefits directly associated with the policies of my elected officials.
What are yours?
