I went for an STI check-up - here's what happened!

    Hi Guys,

I've been lurking here for a while, and thought I should finally post.

I'm a 20 year old guy from London, and for ages I've been worried about going for an STI test. Mainly cause I'd heard stories about how embarrassing and painful it is.

ANYWAY, last week I finally plucked up the courage to go down to the Sexual Health Centre just down the road and get myself checked out.

I thought it might help other nervous guys if I explained what happened during my test - so here goes:

When I arrived at the Centre, the nurse at the desk gave me a form to fill in, with my name and address, and a chart saying whether or not I had any 'symptoms' (I didn't). Then she showed me to the waiting room. There were two waiting rooms, one for men, one for women, and both were behind a sort of screen.

After about 20 minutes, they called my name and I went through to meet the doctor. He was in a normal-looking doctor's room, with a table with an angled back, with a lamp over it, a desk, chair and normal doctor's stuff.

As I sat down in the chair, I told him I was nervous, and he was really good about saying not to worry, it was normal.

Then there were a lot of questions about my sexual history - whether I slept with men or women, when I last had sex, whether it was anal or oral, whether I was active or passive, etc. I've been having sex with guys for about 2 years now, and I've done more or less everything, I reckon, so it was a little bit embarrassing to say to a stranger "Yes, I've been fucked in the arse", but he kept saying it was important to know, and he sees loads of people every day, so there was no need to worry about being honest.

After all that, and typing it all up on the computer, he said, "right, I'm going to need to examine you" and started getting all this stuff out of the drawers in his desk. Trays and three long swabs - like big cotton buds on long sticks, each one in a transparent case. Then he put on rubber gloves. At this point, I was a bit worried again.

First, he said, "just open your mouth, so I can do a throat swab" and he just touched the back of my throat with the first swab.

Then he said, "OK, pull down your trousers and pants and lie up on the table".

So I get my boxers down to just above my knees, and get up on the exam table, and he switched on the little lamp, which was positioned just above my crotch.

To be honest, this was the most awkward part of the exam, 'cause I was lying there for ages with my penis and balls exposed, whilst he arranged his swabs and trays. Finally, he was ready and said, "now, just pull your foreskin back", which I did. He took my penis and checked my bell end, then got the second swab.

RIGHT, now a lot of guys moan about how dreadful this is, and I was really worried it was going to fucking hurt, but in fact it's not too bad at all. He put the swab maybe an inch inside my penis, and held it in there for a second or two. It's uncomfortable, yeah, but I didn't scream or anything! and it was back out. I guess part of the idea of the swab is that there might be a discharge or something, cause he held it up and said, "looks fine", before he put it back in the tube.

Finally - and this was the bit I really wasn't expecting - he said, "OK, now I'll just do a rectal swab. Lie on your side and bring your knees up". So I rolled over, so my bum was facing him, and he got the third swab and quickly went just inside my arse. I barely felt it, and then it was over.

"OK, you can pull your trousers back up now". Great.

Then he said I should go through into the next room to do a urine sample. There was an ordinary toilet with a little window, and a cup. I pissed in the cup and left it on the window, then came back out. Then a really nice nurse came in and took a blood sample. She was obviously used to guys being nervous, cause she was telling jokes! , so it was OK.

Anyway, that was it. She gave me a card with a telephone number on it, which I had to ring a week later. This turned out to be an automated results line, and it went through a list of all the stuff I'd been tested for. Thankfully, everything (HIV, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Chlamydia) was negative.

I really felt like the doctors and nurses were really good at making me relax, and I never felt like I was being "judged".

Overall, I'm really pleased I went, and feel really reassured.

    Hope this helps someone else!

    Tim.

That sounds a lot worse than it needs to be. Most US doctors would draw some blood for tests which would show the diseases. The nurse might ask a few questions about possible sores and discharge. The swab in the mouth is sometimes used for HIV, but I have not heard of the one in the penis, since it would be obviated by the blood test. I don't even know what the anus test would be for. Syphillus, perhaps but the blood test would show that. I am not a Doctor, but I think blood tests would show everything.

That's all pretty routine. The only thing you left out was how many steps it was between the waiting room and the exam room.

Anyway, glad you checked out all clear. If you're sexually active you should make this a regular routine.

Here in the UK what Timbob related is the norm, you always swab the urethra not just for std`s but for any infection .
You are right that the blood-tests show almost everything but there are many things that an STD clinic do not randomly
screen for, thats where microbiology and other screening methods come into there own .

If you see your Dr for say a chest infection they will take a sputum sample to find out what bug is causing this, they can
also find out if the bug is resistant to any of the antibiotics they may use.

I felt that this was a very re-assuring Thread written in such a way that i think that it will put some guy`s minds at ease
towards what is a very personal and often embarresing topic.

No, blood tests don't show everything. So it is actually a good thing if they do the swabs. Thanks for the detailed report TimBob, I am sure it will help a lot of nervous people, so that know what to expect.

I suspect the procedure described has the effect of intimidateing many. I would be extremely reluctant to go through it. In the absence of symptoms, the extensive and invasive exam seems excessive.

It's a full check up. If you just want an HIV test, that's a different story. But this is the kind of test that ensures you that you're a 100% clean

Actually, what TimBob described is a thorough public health STI workup.

The swabs are testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea. A urine test is often diagnostic for urethral infections but it won't show if you have a rectal or oral infection. The proper workup tests for everything.

In the US, unless you go to your private physician and ask for the tests or unless you complain about specific symptoms, they usually won't test for them. Some of the problem is that people in the US aren't used to having thorough physicals and seem to be uptight about getting genital and rectal exams. A lot of the problem is that in the US, unless you go to a public health clinic, you have to pay for all these tests- so you generally get the cheap screening tests and not the diagnostic tests- or more importantly, a culture and sensitivity.

    That doesn't sound that bad.

Every time I go, there's this huge nurse, I call her Helga. She comes in, takes the swabs out, puts them on the counter and then leaves. For 15 mins I'm sitting there, staring at the swabs thinking, "well, I know where that's going..."

    tl;dr
    Helga's a cunt

Give a man religion, and he'll starve praying for a fish.

Well it sounds pretty discrete actually.
Last time I was at anonym HIV test the nurse practically told me to get the fuck out, because I test too often and that it costs them too much money. I think I will give a shot for non-anonym testing next time. That woman was blunt.

Thanks Tim. That was thoughtful of you to explain it all.

It's funny how we can let another guy do all kinds of stuff to us sexually but get
shy around a doctor who has seen and heard it all.

Btw..was the doctor hot at all?

Interesting, I went for an STD test recently and it wasn't quite as 'detailed' as the OP's experience. Here's my story: I went to my county health dept. in the US to be tested for the same four diseases as the OP, for $30. The test involved first sitting down with a counselor to discuss my sexual history and evaluate my risk. He asked me questions such as do you have sex with women or men, how many partners have you had, do you use condoms, are you a top or a bottom, do you or your partners use drugs, etc. I then was given a cup so that I could provide a urine sample for the gonorrhea/chlamydia test. Shortly after that, I got two blood tests which were pretty painless, one for HIV and one for syphilis. No swab up the urethra or anus (even though I am a bottom). About a week later I called and got my results, all negative.
