during Hurricane Irene, the towns that always flood flooded once again, and I love cable/internet for a day (but power stayed on)... just in case, I raided my parents pantry yesterday and stocked up on a few days worth of food (rice, canned soup, eggs, cheese, and bread... also have some ground meat in the fridge already that I was planning on turning into buffalo chicken meatballs).

I was afraid to go to a proper grocery store yesterday, but I heard they were insane.

I'm up on a hill, so the problem for me will be wind and the street down hill that leads to getting out. Old neighborhoods here still follow cow paths. Go figure... in Boston. Anyway... I may be trapped and without power in alot of wind, gust now expected in my area up to seventy. I have what I need, camping stoves to cook on if extended loss of power. It's only going to be forties and fifties, so loss of heat isn't much. You just have to dress for January...lol.

same here, with my expectations from Irene. We just did this and although it took out all the pears from my trees, it didn't take any of them down. The house is built into a blue granite hill, It's not going anywhere, and we only lost power for about half an hour. What worries me this time is the length of time on the power outage. The Storm is hitting the heart of our power grid. New England could go dark for an extended period of time if Connecticut takes a hard hit. It would affect NYC and Jersey the same way I'd imagine.

We're battening down the hatches here in Southern New Jersey. Picked up my lover who lives in Philadelphia so we could weather out the storm together. Bought bottled water, candles, batteries and lots of munchies for when the power goes out.

Dr. Jeff Masters has a good news page on this without the media sensationalism. Stay safe guys. I've been in two hurricanes before. Be sure to have a ready to go kit with everything. I sure hope everything will be fine... I don't think it'll be worse then Irene.

no gas stove? I thought that was pretty standard in the Northeast... love the fact that my stove will work just fine with or without power, as long as the gas lines don't flood (which would take something catastrophic). only real hitch is that I have to manually light the pilot light, but I've got those super long BBQ lighters for that.

Every year there is a doomsday hurricane announced in North East, every flashlight and generator is sold with in days. You will literally not find a flashlight or a generator at this point. It has me wondered if people eat their flashlights every year or lose their generators from past storms? When Irene was announced last year, there wasn't a single flashlight left to buy and now there is the same damn chaos of flashlights and water. You should have these basic home supplies anyway. Don't wait last minute for hurricanes.

Having been thru 8 hurricanes here in Florida I offer this piece of advice..Turn your fridge and freezer to its lowest cold setting and open only if necessary..And if your power loss is going to be for an extended time move frozen products to your washer..Place ice in bottom of washer..load your food...top with ice..when melting the water will stay cold thus extending your storage time..

My house has just been added to hurricane force winds. I still think that for the most part this will be a trees and transformers event for us and it sounds like Mass is ready.

We all go through Nor easters all the time. Some are rougher than others, but this isn't a tornado, it's a thousand mile across weak hurricane.

I think the most challenging part will be to find things to do without electronics until the lights come back on this far up the coast. I am concerned for New York and New Jersey, though. Looks liek they are getting it worse than Boston and points north. I called some friends on the cape that were going to weather it out there, and they are here now with us for the duration.

I'm sure it will be a gay old time.

Presently it's moving at 14mph... which is relatively fast... if it stalls out then you could have many more problems. In this case being hit fast is better than slowly battered.

This is a much larger storm than Irene and the duration of high winds will last much longer. I expect the wind damage and power outages to be more extensive than we had with Irene. I hope people take this seriously.

I think we could withstand a direct hit a bit more easily because of our geography.

I'm FREAKED OUT!!! Irene was bad enough and it just glanced the coast of NJ. This one is will be moving across NJ and directly over Philly.

I have my supplies but I worry about items in my refrigerator and freezer. I bought two bags of ice and I need to fill some buckets with water so I can flush my toilet if the power does go out. I live 21 stories up and the winds are amplified so I'm not looking forward to tomorrow night!

For those in more tropical climates don't forget that your vegetaion can handle high winds in general. Not ours! A lot of trees are going to topple.

I'm slightly freaking out, mostly to compensate for last year when I disregarded the threat of Irene and subsequently got stranded at my friend's house for two days.

Got candles, batteries, cash, fully-charged phone and laptop, non-perishable food, several bottles of potable water as well as a bathtub full of water for flushing... I think I should be alright. Still, it's creepy outside right now and we're scheduled to start feeling the storm in a few hours.
