This song seriously makes me want to claw my eardrums out. What the hell has happened in the last 20 years to mainstream music, at least in North America?! Is the state of the industry this bad in Europe?

Pop music in general has always sucked decade to decade. The artists and music that survives the passage of time is what we remember to be as classics. Most of these artists we're forced to listen to on the radio will be irrelevant after a few years, but we'll still have this mundane impression that current music has gone to shit while nostalgia dictates a skewed version of past pop generations.
Yes, 2012 may have Taylor Swift, but we also have Adele.

Oh god, thank you for making that point. That eases my mind a bit. I think I get a bit too worked up over the state of the industry, but music is such an integral part of my life that it infuriates me to see these no-talents make it so huge while some of my favourite artists are lounging in obscurity. Sure, I like a bit of mainstream music (Skrillex, Bassnectar, Kamelot and Evanescence leap to mind), but most of it is just wretched.

When I first heard this song I thought it was by Avril Lavigne. Definitely a different style/sound for Taylor Swift.
Anyway, I really like the song and I generally enjoy listening to her music. It's very cute, catchy pop music.
Sums pretty much what I feel.
I never really like Taylor Swift to begin with (she's okay but nothing more), but this song just proves my feelings have changed into "Why u make this generic genre?".
Same goes with Avril. Her first album is okay, everything beyond that is rubbish.
My friends always ask me why I very rarely listen to mainstream music and instead chooses uncommon music. I would just answer the unusual music I listen to offers me more than just something to hum in a week and then forgotten forever.
Any life amounts to no more than one drop in the limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean but a multitude of drops?
Honestly, I think there is a time for both kinds of music. At least for me, I'm not always in the mood to listen to some really artistic or deep music. Sometimes I just want fun, catchy songs with vapid lyrics to sing along to as I'm doing things. I dunno. I guess I'm just not snobbish about my taste in music but some people are music aficionados and feel strongly about whatever standards they want pop music to meet.
A few famous pop music writers have said in general there has not been any good music written since the late 90's I agree!
Generally the mainstream pop music has become so unbelievably banal as to have become utterly irrelevant.
With so few really talented writers, musicians and singers that it makes one think that we are living in some kind of existentially bankrupt parallel reality.
Without the collective social anger and angst, there isn't a good breeding ground for great music. I also don't think that these vanilla 'talent' karaoke shows help the cause in any way either.
But just as grunge and punk was a reaction to the over packaged fluff of the disco era, or rap/hiphop was to the overprocessed 80's glam and techno...there will be something that comes out of someone's basement that rocks it again.
Just like TV shows or movies, you need to know how to pick them.
"Pitchy, screechy, screamy and repetitive." i know people who consider that a good definition of dubstep, actually.![]()
What does it mean? The same thing finding most Saturday morning cartoons annoying means. It means you outgrew the demo.

There have been terrible songs on the pop scene since it started. Pitchy and repetitive is what makes it pop; it gets stuck in your head easily.
Extraordinary how potent cheap music is.

My current bop
Personally Im kind of disappointed with her switching genre...but she's Taylor Swift- a blessed American royalty, she has a knack to gain approval nod from public in a flash...very charming girl.^^
The music ...is something I can't hear..
nowadays people like to hearing exhilarating pop arena anthem (if that making sense) with chorus catchier than 3 yo songs. I thought..young folks have huge deal energy, they're venting their boredom in ridiculously uplifting song..about petty things..
I am a titaaaaannniiiiuuummm... for sample
reminds me of my charismatic church era when music supposed to make people exciting, jumping from their chair and praise the lord...I feel same effect lol ^^ and that's why I hate it.
Every damn song she sings is about the same thing.
So I admit I listen to top 40s. Yeah it's annoying when the same songs repeat every half hour, so I don't listen to the radio as often. Unfortunately there are many underground artists in almost any genre. They have more talent than T-Swizzle or Flo Rida, but for one reason or another, they won't have the success that they have. It's an unfortunate thing, but that's the life of a musician. (YAY, STRUGGLE!) As far as listening to this music, either bring an iPod or whatever where ever you go, learn to like the music, or tune it out.
the scary thing is the word is going around that she's about to go platnium again in one week.![]()
one thing about the closet/you don't have to hurry/it will be bad tomorrow/so brother, don't you worry![]()
It kind of bugs me when people make such sweeping generalizations about the state of music these days. While I do like a lot of Top 40 pop artists such as Katy Perry, Taylor, Nicki Minaj, Britney, I also realize that just because their music is what's played the most doesn't mean it's the only music of our generation. People are just lazy and don't want to go find other artists that aren't being played on Top 40 radio.
I love deep artistic music as much as the next guy, but when I am driving around with my friends or want to be in a fun mood, I go turn to catchy pop songs.
Really, it's not "modern mainstream music", it's just mainstream music in general. Every decade has it's memorable hits that weren't exactly artistic masterpieces but are never the less still remembered for their annoying catchiness.
