Split-ticket Voting

This is something a phenomenon this election cycle that is unprecedented in nearly 60 years in US history. People in droves will be voting for candidates from multiple parties this year instead of a straight ticket. Reckon the pollsters are baffled by this but IMO, it is actually good for Democracy that people don't vote straight down the ballot for a particular party.

It is unwise to vote for different parties for President and Congress, since it promotes gridlock. Mixed voting for other offices is less important.

Not usually all at once since different offices have different term lengths. Sometimes we get to vote for all at once, but that's fairly rare.

As for Police Chiefs, that depends on the state, and local municipal voting rules. Here in the City of Milwaukee, we don't get to vote for Police Chief, who's appointed (hired) by the Mayor and Common Council. We do get to vote for the County Sheriff, though.

I used to vote for different parties depending on the candidates. However, at the Federal level, given the current state of gridlock, I'm voting a straight party ticket this time around.

The 12th Amendment changed that. Adams and Jefferson despised each other.

I also wish that electoral college states would go back to proportional voting instead of winner-take-all. Would make the race far more interesting instead of having the presidential race focused on 5-10 states each time.

Article II, Section 1, Clause 3 of the Constitution provided for the original fashion by which the President and Vice President were to be chosen by the electors. In the original system, the candidate who received both the most votes and more than half of all votes cast would become President, the candidate receiving the second most votes would become Vice President. If you do vote a straight ticket, don't forget to look at the end of the ballot because sometimes we (not sure if everyone does) vote on such things as should so and so be retained as a judge, or something like that.

Haven't most states done away with voting a straight ticket?

I'll be working as an election judge this year. Have no idea where but look forward to a fun, interesting day.

I did it in 2008 in Kansas City -- but this year I'll be working in the county which has a more efficient system for voting.
