Martha Raddatz Call At the End of Debate Really Irked Me

Did anyone catch the comment at the end by Raddatz? She said something about a soldier she spoke to who decried the ugliness of the US' politics.

I don't disagree with the sentiments. My issue is why is that soldier's opinion even mentioned in the debate? Is it supposed to mean something more if it's a soldier saying it? I don't think so.

That was odd. People watch political debates because they expect and want them to get ugly. It was like bringing up dieting at a bake-off.

Most normal people understand and appreciate the service of our soldiers. Using a soldier as a source of a question is designed to give it more gravitas. Does it as a practical matter? Not really.

Martha, as can also be said of NBC's Richard Engel, has spent most of the past 9 years in the Middle East, much of it with our military. Makes sense that she would see many things from a military person's POV.

I think she did a great job as moderator. She was "fair & balanced". I'm sure all the major news outlets (except Fox, of couse, I doubt Martha would stoop to their level) took notice.

Definitely. Dianne Sawyer, watch your back!

Why does the question have more "gravitas" if it comes from a soldier?

Would your opinion mean less if you had the same concern?

I think people respect their doctors and nurses too, but no one is asking them for their opinions of politics and use their opinions to make a statement.

(Please Jackoroe: answer my post. You give these superficial answers with cliches. But there's nothing under it. Kinda like the phrase, "They're [soldiers] are fighting for your freedom." What the hell does that even mean?)

    There's a good question!

She was "fair and boring." Never asked Biden to stop interrupting and slightly pushed back one two follow-up questions, that I can remember, in a 90-minute debate.

Where's Russert, the dad, when you need him?

Watch out. Jackoroe's going to come back with another cliche, like: "So, you don't support freedom and liberty?"

    LOL

So was Biden, to me -- he was too much the gentleman. Ryan was begging to be smacked up the side of the head, but Biden kept being nice.

It was a good debate, though Biden could have been much harder on Ryan.
Was Martha 'fair, balanced and objective'? Probably not.

One can say many things about the worldview promoted by her questions. That it is "objective" or free of ideology is most certainly not one of them.

Nah Martha was spot on and shut them down regularly, she ask tough questions.

As far as the significance of asking a soldier what they think of the political process? A practical matter. She is a foreign affairs chief. She sees that one class of American is put directly into harms way by the choices of politicians. That and I cant find a link but I remember a public confidence poll last year or before where the public trusted the ability and actions of our military way above and beyond any other public servant.

A lot of my Republican friends tell me today that she did a horrible job.

Translated: Ryan must have lost the debate.
