Today ... a picnic in the bush.

It was a long and dusty drive but well worth it. About an hour and a half's drive from Kalgoorlie along the access road to the Indian Pacific railway line, then a further three qrs of an hour along various bumpy bush tracks, before we found a spot to stop and have our picnic. It was a brilliant, brilliant day! Some pics I took along the way and when we arrived ....





















Pink & Grey galahs ...













This little fellow (called a thorny devil or mountain devil) was sitting quietly in the middle of the road when we came along. They are incredibly placid & cute little lizards. We helped him get across to the other side of the road where he continued to pose happily for me before waddling off into the bush ...

Change the colour of the rocks to grey and change the trees to more northern types and this is very reminiscent of the Canadian Shield, which begins just north of where I live.

The remains of an old disused dam ... constructed by Afghan cameleers who came out during the goldrush days of the early 20th century.

Well they both involve eating sausage so I guess you could say they're similar!

1. The trees with the blackened lower trunks are known as blackbutts (interesting name!). The trees in the other pics are a variety of gum tree (eucalypt) but I'm not sure of the name.
2. Sorry, not sure about the rock, probably granite of some sort ... don't think it's volcanic, though.

Great pics! I'm envious. I enjoyed the company of a thorny devil when I travelled some of the Canning Stock Route a few years ago. Love to get back. One day...

Wow, the little creature looked so tame and laid back - your photo with your hand put into perspective just had tiny it was, haha. I'd still have jumped and ran away.. What can I say?!

Were you in a known park or sorts then? The photo you took of people having the picnic, I imagine was the party you were with?

Those trees looks crazy, and that lake looks a delight, but one imagine it's probably full of everything under the sun, that would make my skin crawl, hahaha.. Food looks tasty too! On nom nom!
