general question to which I have not particularly come across any answer or discussion . In the west Benedictine was the only monastic order for maybe 500 years , and then there was an explosion after 1000-1100 . Also thinking other , the Stylites and the desert orders were very east and Greek - possibly not even RC .

I'm sure that there were many desert Monks of both the East and the West before St. Benedict's time, and that he knew of them very well through there writings. The Desert Monks for the most part I think were called the Desert Fathers of the Church.
