Would you own a driverless car?

I read a report recently in which a vast majority of polled drivers would not own a driverless car. They like the toys (assisted parking, blind spot warnings, etc.), but they otherwise seem to want to control the car itself.

I wouldn't own one. I'm one of those who would rather drive it myself.

What about you? Would you own one?

Re: Would you own a driverless car?

i know i would. it would be cool as hell to own a car that parks itself. i bet you they all would change their minds if the car was able to drive itself. i know i would be the first in line to buy a car that does that. i hope there's technology where let's say i can open the car door with my thumbprint or even your dna where you just put your finger in your mouth to get some salvia and wipe it onto something.

If the technology matured enough where they would be safe and practical, then yes I would own one. I would have more time to spend focusing on talking with my passengers or reading important JUB updates while driving to work.

Sounds cool, you wouldn't need to get a drivers licence either.

THIS. Same reason I vote with a paper ballot. I know too much about computers to trust them driving my car for me or recording my vote.

Exactly what I was thinking...what if the computer in it?
    "crashed"?
    or
    locked-up?
    or
    got a virus?

maybe you could 'hack' someone's and take control of it

Re: Would you own a driverless car?

I can imagine that a driverless car would solve a lot of traffic congestion problems, but like with so much other technology, it would have to really mature before I'd feel comfortable in it. Plus I like the act of driving itself.

But an optional cruise control like that might be good, where you can drive into a commuter lane and let the car take over until you reach your destination.

As long as it's NOT powered by Microsoft!

Keep in mind how many computers are already in new cars. They are pretty damn reliable now. Used to be a nightmare in the beginning.

But they don't drive the car. Think about autopilots. Their jobs are extremely simple compared to a computer dealing with twisty roads, multiple lanes, weather conditions, lots and lots of traffic, and hundreds of other drivers who don't necessarily know how to drive.

Which brings up an interesting question. Could you still be charged with impaired driving if you're behind the wheel but not actually driving the car?

No way. I want to drive. Just that simple. I don't drink anymore so that's not a problem for me. I don't need to drink when I go out clubbing.

I totally would. There are so many days that I wish the car would drive me to home after a 3 hours session of "killing my foot" aka skating in the ice rink and days when I woke up late for class and you have to spent half an hour finding a parking slot.

Not to mention all the possible unforseen circumstances that may arise, such as a loose 2x4 board or shredded truck tier pieces lying in the middle of the highway, etc. Even if the computer recognized the hazard, would it be able to analyze, also, the traffic and pavement conditions and allow the CORRECT evasive action? There could be unique circumstances of two or three unrelated things going on at the same time.

Not to mention that, yes, I like the activity of driving itself.

So, my answer to the thread question is HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is that these systems would be limited to dedicated electronic lanes anyway. At least for a long time.

I can see a use for this, as there are already driver less trains and people movers, but in the end I prefer to hold my own destiny in my hands.

Therefore I do not have a car that drives "by wire". I want my foot and hands physically connected to the mechanics of the car.
    And I drive stick.

Re: Would you own a driverless car?

This is an idea dreamed up by the guys wearing the hats with propellers. I would guess the vast majority of people ENJOY driving their cars, so why would they want to give it up? One nutbar even came up with a steering system guided by the movement of the driver's eyeballs. So practical, and not dangerous at all as long as you remember to keep your eyes on the road at all times.

I wouldn't, maybe it a mix of being a little OCD and I would need to have control on something like that, and also I couldn't 100% trust technology like that. I would to paranoid that it might glitch or crash and then it would literally crash...

I'd actually prefer my car to have a driver. I understand Bentley offers that option already.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did.
