    'American Idol' Season 12

Mariah Carey Joins 'American Idol' Season 12

Mariah Carey has officially joined "American Idol."

Following weeks of speculation, Fox's entertainment president Kevin Reilly made the announcement at the Fox executive session panel at the Television Critic's Association Summer Press Tour.

"I'm so excited to be joining 'Idol.' I wanted to be there today and I wish I could've been there myself to tell you," Carey told the audience via phone after Reilly called her and put her on speaker. "It happened really quickly. I can't wait to get started in a couple months. Everybody have a great TCA and I will see you in January."

Reilly would not confirm any other rumors, including whether or not Randy Jackson will be back in judging capacity.

"We finished the show at the top again -- Phil Phillips went to gold faster than any other 'Idol' in the history of the show -- but our ratings were down," Reilly said. "Not being the only game in town now we needed to keep things fresh. We had a dialogue with everyone on the bench. We have the biggest names in the business interested in doing the job. It’s going to be a matter of finding the right chemistry and making a deal. Randy has been working with Mariah for a long, long time. Randy was instrumental in doing this deal."

Shortly after the announcement to the audience, Fox issued a statement confirming Carey's "Idol" involvement.

“As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with 'American Idol,'” Carey said in a statement. "I'm currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, 'Triumphant,' which will be out early next month. I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.”

"American Idol" Season 12 will look different when it returns in January 2013. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are both leaving the show after two seasons. Veteran judge Jackson's involvement with the series is also in question with rumors indicating he'll move to a mentor role.

How long will Carey stay on the series? Details weren't revealed, but "Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told audiences at the TCA Summer Press Tour that he can see having a new judging panel every year of the series.

“We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show,” Simon Fuller, creator and executive producer of 'Idol,' said in a statement. “Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.”

Report: Nicki Minaj Joining 'American Idol'

Ever since Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler stepped down from their "American Idol" judges' chairs, rumors have swirled about which stars will be asked to fill their seats.

The first replacement announced last month was Mariah Carey -- who was confirmed as a judge for the Fox reality show on July 23 -- and now it is being reported that Nicki Minaj will take the second seat.

According to multiple sources at US Weekly, the "Super Bass" singer will be bringing her colorful wigs and bubbly personality to "Idol," but there are a few contracts to sign before it becomes official.

It has also been reported that Nick Jonas and Pharrell Williams are under consideration to judge the series, with US Weekly's sources saying that current judge Randy Jackson will be moved to a mentoring role.

After news first leaked that he was in talks with the show, the youngest Jonas brother tweeted, "The rumors are true... I am being considered to be a judge on American Idol, and it would be a dream come true if it happens," with the hashtag #nickonidol.

Ryan Seacrest is set to return as host for the show's 12th season, which will premiere on Fox in January.

Minaj is a flash in the pan, cannot be taken seriously, and cannot sing. She would be a DISASTER. Get some other people with true talent that contestants can take seriously.

A former AI contestant who has experience some success and has been through the whole thing would be a much better choice than Minaj who will not do much at all to heighten the shows credibility or popularity.

maybe they should call all previous winners to make up the top 11 then lets see who gets voted off the last.

    AI 12: All Stars

Or get all the 2nd runner ups.

An all winners edition would be boring. Fantasia and Ruben would go first, then Jordin and Taylor, then maybe a couple of the white guys would vote split each other to let Kelly and Carrie make the top 4/5, and then there'd be a clusterfuck world war erupting over who is the cutest out of whichever of David, Kris, Lee, Scotty and/or Phil are still around. :P

And So The Wig Yanking Begins!

Keith Urban's got wig burns all over his face today and it's all because he was in the middle of two diva bitches dragging each other back and forth. The producers of American Idol have finally figured out that we don't want to see a bunch of fresh-faced, sappy ass kids sing some dumb Carrie Underwood song in between crying about how hard their life has been. We want to see WEAVES FLYING, which is sort of what happened during auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina today.

TMZ got a hold of a video of Nicki making Hello Kitty her #1 enemy by cursing Mimi out as Keith Urban contemplated whether or not he should just throw himself out that window behind him. The producers had to press the stop button for the day after the toilet baby of Effie from the Hunger Games and Trash Heap nearly punched the rainbows out of the queen of the lambs. I speak fluent cunt, so this is what I heard in that video:

Nicki: “And if you’ve got a fucking problem, handle it. I told them I’m not fucking putting up with your fucking highness over there.”

Mimi: “Oh why, why do I have a three year old sitting around me?”

Nicki “I’m not sitting here for 20 minutes and have you run down your resume everyday.”

Mimi: “I can’t see my kids, because you decided to act like a little crazy bitch and go all around the stage.”

Nicki: “Go see them now, go. You’re boring as shit!”

Apparently, after this, Nicki threatened to knock Mimi out. If this is some STUNT QUEEN shit, then slow clap for the producers for finally giving us a show. If this isn't some STUNT QUEEN shit, then slow clap for the producers for fully knowing that putting those two egos together would end with them scalping each other with their acrylic claws.

Mimi responded to this mess on Twitter with a simple: whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

And I'm responding to this mess right here with a simple: YAAAAASSSSSSSS!!!

UPDATE: And here's TMZ's transcript of this beautiful wreck:

Nicki: Get this shit in self control. Get in control. Get in control.
    Randy: Settle down, settle down
Nicki: Don't lose your head. Don't lose your head (inaudible). Don't tell me I'm a gangster.
Nicki: (inaudible) every 5 minutes. So every time you patronize me, I'm-ma take it back, and if you've got a fucking problem, handle it.
Nicki: I told them I'm not fuckin' putting up with her fucking highness over there. Figure it the fuck out. Figure it out.
Nicki: I'm not gonna sit here every fucking minute to have you come down and harass me every minute everyday.

Great....just what Idol needs... a selfish diva and a bat shit crazy one.... forget the singers, come for the sideshow! Krystal and Alexis for the Hip Hop Age! Sheessh..... at it's best Idol was NEVER about the superstar panelists but the chemistry between snarky Simon Cowell and unpredictable Paula Abdul has never been replaced. Just one stunt after another...bring in that lady who did the bikini girl thing, forgot her name....bring in Ellen....no,Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will provide the crazy and the bitchiness...no, now Mariah will be the ice queen and Nicki Minaj will be the flat out nutcase! Then again,at least it won't have the completely talentless and tactless Khloe Kardashian as a host. Until the show has some more compelling singers battling in the top twelve none of the stunt-y celebrity sideshows will mean a damn. If you want to have a female r&B voice you could have gotten a great one in either Toni Braxton or Mary J Blige. Idol wants to prove one can jump the shark many times without actually jumping the shark...I'm afraid they are going to be sadly mistaken if this keeps up.

If Nicki's currrent, the music world REALLY is down the toilet. Most of our current "stars" couldn't hold a candle to the best of the past. Nicki can't sing...she's a hip hop performance artist(which frankly most hip- hoppers are) ....even Mariah as great a singer she is has basically been a corporate star who has done what great works of art?Peppy songs and emotional overload ballads showcasing her range but almost no real soul to her music. Adele is current and she blows the two pop divas away.

Clay Aiken: 'American Idol' Is About The Judges Now

Clay Aiken has noticed a shift in "American Idol." Aiken, was the runner up in Season 2 of the Fox singing competition series said the show has shifted its attention in later season.s

While reminiscing with Billboard about his time on the series, Aiken said the first few seasons of "Idol" were "about the contestants."

"Kelly [Clarkson] and Justin [Guarini] and Tamyra [Gray] and Nikki McKibbin, they were all the stars of the show," Aiken said. "And when I was on, Ruben (Studdard) and myself and Kimberly Locke were the stars of the show. Now 'Idol' is about the judges. I don't even know if they remember there are contestants anymore."

Over its 12 years on the air, "American Idol" has seen its judging panel shift. Original judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul have left the series, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi came and went and Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler lasted two seasons. Only Randy Jackson has remained.

For Season 12, "Idol" has brought in Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey to sit alongside Jackson. The show has made headlines due to the reported feuding between Minaj and Carey, an Australian network even made it the center of a promo for the new season.

Site That Urges 'Idol' Watchers to 'Vote for the Worst' to Close

They openly mocked American Idol season 10's Paul McDonald as their favored "White Guy With A Guitar" contestant. They famously bragged about keeping season four's Scott Savol in the competition long past his expiration date. And then there was the never-ending love and support for season six's most polarizing contestant: Sanjaya Malakar.

And now, Vote For The Worst creator Dave Della Terza is bringing it all to an end. After nine years of operation, the website that claims responsibility for being a thorn in the side of the Fox singing competition will call it quits at the end of season 12.

"It's been a fun ride for the last 9 seasons of 'American Idol' and various other terrible reality shows," the VFTW creator wrote Sunday. "Some wonderful person has paid off Nicki Minaj to help take down the show in the most dramatic and flamboyant way possible, so let's take advantage."

Why did he choose season 12 as the site's swan song? Della Terza explained his view that the show is "no longer relevant."

"VFTW has accomplished our one true goal: making sure that America stops taking 'American Idol' and other singing reality shows seriously," he said. "We're leaving before we get completely bored with a show that really should have bowed out gracefully a few years ago."

VFTW began its reign in 2004, at first championing season three contestants Jasmine Trias and John Stevens. The idea, Della Terza said, was to get America to laugh at a show that was beginning to take itself "too seriously."

"'American Idol' has become a shell of its former self. It used to produce stars and it used to be must-see TV. Now, you can count on a bunch of bland finalists singing the same 10 songs over and over with maybe one contestant becoming a one-hit wonder," he said. "We helped kill 'American Idol,' but even more so, 'American Idol' helped kill itself by refusing to stay relevant. The show will be lucky to last a few more unmemorable seasons."

Della Terza thanked the website's most prominent supporters, Howard Stern and David Letterman, and told fans: "Let's enjoy it for all it's worth, and make sure to get the contestants America hates one step closer to winning a meaningless prize. And when our fun contestants go home, let's make sure we crown White Guy With Guitar #6."

I really love the panel this season. Each judge has a unique perspective and something of value to say. It's not like the early days where two of the judges would be total boring suck-ups, and the third judge was the "mean" one.

    Re: 'American Idol' Season 12

Between Mariah the diva-bitch and Minaj the crazy she-beast, I was expecting an enjoyably hot mess episode. But instead, the premiere was as boring as if Steven Tyler and Ellen Degeneres were back on the panel at the same time. Both of these chicks were trying way too hard to seem nice, where's the fun in that?

at first i thought nicki was entertaining however i caught some parts of the show with my back turned, just listening as i was typing a report and all i could hear was minaj. lol. she has her moments but sometimes she just talks too much. though she was far more interesting that MC. Mariah personified the character she played in Ally McBeal - like she was more concerned with looking good, her best angles and good lighting than anything else. Randy seemed like he's always giving the assist to MC while Keith was such a disappointment. Blake Shelton has such a lovable personality and is enjoyable to watch with some to spare.

I lost interest in Idol when Paula left and stopped watching after Simon left, but decided to tune into this season's debut because me and my boyfriend had nothing else to watch. I have to admit, I found myself enjoying it at times. I was surprised.

I might be watching this season!

I saw the season premiere a few hours ago. It's kind of sad how Nicki can't just let go of Mariah's diva-tude. I probably won't watch the show much, though. It's been done. I need something new

Lazaro's audition was very inspiring, though.

I saw the first episode and at points it was really entertaining. I saw a few contestants I felt I could follow. But then...the constant bickering between Mariah and Nicki started to wear thin. I don't really care for Nicki and watching her on this show, does not change that opinion at all. She is really annoying to me.

I only caught the first night, and thought the whole fighting was a little forced. I haven't been a fan of the show for a long time and my interest fades rather quickly.

All I have to say after catching up on last week's episodes is that Mariah Carey is FAKER THAN FAUX FUR (--Na'onka Mixon) and Nicki Minaj is crazy and funner than I expected.

Speaking of which, have you ever heard any explanation why Naonka ended up voting for Fabio to win? I was surprised since she seemed to hate Fabio, seemed to like Chase, and the difference between those two was only one vote.

I've read that apparently she and Fabio actually got along well out there and their fighting was more like that between siblings than legitimate animosity. Why the edit chose to ignore all of that and focus on how well she got along with Chase when she ended up being the deciding vote in Fabio's favor is beyond me.

Ugh, I know. She's so extraordinarily unlikeable. I can't watch this season, it's even shittier than the last one. Reality TV isn't entertaining anymore. I think I'm done with it all except Big Brother/Amazing Race.

When Keith said he had to leave early because his wife was getting an award from the NY Film Critics, I totally expected Mariah to remind everyone that she was in Precious.

And it would've been awesome if Nicki had added, "And Glitter."

I think Minaj is funny as hell. She keeps me in stitches and she has a big heart. I love her nick names for people as they enter. She also is not ashamed to show she has the hots for someone.
I think you mistake me for someone who cares.

I'm enjoying Nicki a lot more than I thought I would. And honestly I'm not minding the bickering between Mariah and Nicki...get rid of Randy's dumbass jumping in and I'd be all set.

I know right. Totally not digging her and she comes across as very boring and almost more concerned with her looks than what she's saying.

I'm starting to love Nicki. She's funny in her own way. Keeping Nicki around wouldn't be a bad idea. Can't believe they hired Mariah still, $18 mil not well spent.

I also fine Keith Urban oddly attractive. When he wears those shirts partially unbuttoned and has his pec tattoo peeking out, I'm almost dying to put my hand in and feel that pec and slowly peel off the shirt to reveal it. . .

Hello 911? I'd like to report an incident of grand theft because Nicki Minaj has CLEARLY STOLEN THE SHOW FROM MARIAH CAREY! (They should just draw a chalk outline around Randy Jackson and Keith Urban) If the producers don't force Nicki to suppress all her fun qualities for the live shows (a very real possibility) or just drop her after this season (an even realer possibility), we might be looking at a new Idol Star, and the best judge the show has produced since Simon Cowell.

The fact that no one saw this coming makes it even more awesome.

I hated the Nicki pick no end at first, but from what I've heard and from what I've seen of her, she is the best by far of away of the judges added since the original. Certainly the female ones. Mariah, J LO...big names but chemistry wise, not much there.

    nicki will fade....

i cannot stand watching her lame ass.

    shes such a condescinng whore.

the bitch has no fucking talent.

she needs to stay with idol and stop releasing music.

her songs are enjoyable but they are poppy ti po, not a rapper that she claims to be.

    FAKE BITCH

i actually enjoy mariah, at least she has some originality.

nicki didnt steal any show, with her annoying whining voice.

KATY PERRY was the best JUDGE so far for me.

Didn't see Katy Perry, was a one episode type thing but she's really entertaining as well. Not a great voice as a singer but better than her detractors give her credit for.
