Do You Mind Being Called 'Girl' ?

Do you mind having your friends call you 'Girl' or referring to you in girl pronouns ? I don't hear it a lot. Though I can remember when I first heard it. I thought that was weird & didn't know who the person was referring to .

A little lol I have a gay acquaintance that calls all gays girl. He once said that to me and I was like "No. I'm not a girl."

After my sister found out I was gay, her and I were talking one night and she said she was glad to have another sister... No, I have a penis lol

What it all comes down to is ones own personal pronouns. If my gay acquaintance wants to be called she or girl, then thats what I call her. But if I want to be he or boy, you need to respect that.

Actually, no. But, in my case, it's more familiarity than anything. When I see some of the other cashiers at work, I'll go, "Hey, girl!", and at least one of them always goes, "Hey, girl!" right back. No one at work knows about me being gay, but I don't mind it in the least.

Only if someone I care about calls me "gurl" in a joking matter. If someone I can't fucking stand or a complete stranger said it to me, I would be ready to bash their skull in.

Not much at all. It's all about context. If a friend said to me "Girl, have I got something to tell YOU!", I'd just smile and ask what it was. It's like calling me "dude" even though I'm not used for breeding. I guess if some random person said something like "What do you think about this - I'd like to get a girl's point of view", I'd feel the need to say something, but I can't imagine anybody doing that.

It is frustrating, I honestly feel as though it helps advance stereotypes that gay men are "sissy's" and can't perform the same actions or jobs as "real men"

    LMAO

This really struck my funny bone for some reason. I couldn't stop laughing.

Anyhow, yes I hate it and believe it or not no one has ever called me girl or any female equivalent. I assume most know what the outcome would be if they did.

My friends or family do not call me girl nor do I call them that even if they are a drag queen. I call them by name. It for me is not a term of endearment. Its also not a barn burner.

Generally the gay guys that refer to each other as girl I don't typically hang out with. But it can be funny in certain situations, especially if the guy is a real prude. :P

I'd prefer not to be referred to as girl, sis, niece, or female pronouns....but I guess it would depend on context. I'd be most likely to let it be though, cuz I call everyone dude, man, guys, or bro. I call my Mom "bro" sometimes so I guess it's whatever, haha.

I agree that it is contextual. Usually when my friends say it, it is more about the situation than the person. When something goes down or someone gets sassy, that's when one of us will bust out and "ooh girl". Although it can be directed at anyone and even the straight guys are doing it now, or like Lex said something like "girl let me tell you" which again is said in a joking, playfully dramatic manner. Outside of the general joking among my friends anyone calling me some version of girl will get an ear full.

LOL not at all. Some of my pals back in the day used to get sassy and call themselves (and me) "gurl" "gul", etc.

I usually found it hilarious, and never took offense. They were just being what I refer to as "extra".

    It would depend...
If a friend said it jokingly (and in private) no wouldn't really bother me.
If it was in public or especially around family, yeah I would have a problem with that.

I'm secure in my masculinity, if someone wants to playfully refer to me as 'girl' or 'sis' or something I dont mind, it's not really a big deal, even if it's in a rude context I don't care, that is the other person's problem, not mine.

    Not much bothers me.

It's not an insult to me, so I don't get really upset. HOWEVER, I do not like it. I have corrected a girl who didn't know me well who called me "girl" via text. I told that I wasn't a "girl." She got offended I guess, unfriended me on Facebook, and never spoke to me again. I was really polite about it. Gurl, I don't know why I even try to be civil...

I'm a man, so I would be offended if someone called me "girl".

Also, calling a gay man "girl" or "gurl" implies that gay men are really the equivalent of women.

Note: I can call myself a "queen" though. That doesn't count. I'm talking about other people -- especially straight people calling me a "girl".
I used to be like that, but not anymore. At least not on the first date. Third date, whole other story..."

well, i don't think it's cool to follow a stereotype or to define someone as such because they're a certain way. i feel that that's just going the low route. it doesn't need to be like that.

Damn, I didn't know people got so irritated being called "girl."

Usually when someone says, "gurrrrrrrrrl," it's usually followed by some kind of gossip or sarcastic remark(for me at least). I usually think they add in "gurl" because girls tend to be gossipy and nasty drama queens.

I've never been really called "girl" in another context, so I don't really know how I'd react. But I would like to think I'd go up to them and just start grinding on them.

no, let me explain myself a bit more.

to me, i see calling me a "girl" the equivalent of a stranger walking up to me and saying "yo yo yo.. what up my dude. what's good in the hood?" because i'm black. you know, whatever happened to treating somebody for who they are and not by the characteristics they can't control. you know, just because i'm gay doesn't mean you can call me girl or you can give me a lady gaga cd for christmas or you can run up on me for fashion tips. just because i'm a man doesn't mean that you can get me to lift a bunch of boxes up or i know how to beat nails and two by fours or am an avid sports fan. the thing that really gets me is that because people expect you to be a certain way because you happen to fall into this box. like i'm going to be me. i'm not going to fit into a certain mold just because i'm gay or because i'm black. i never let a characteristic define me and it should never be like that. you know, no need to jump the gun and try to judge me without getting to know me first. i think that's not cool at all.

Not really. It's just one more way that people are shockingly unobservant. But I don't feel the need to whip out my penis to disprove their hasty conclusion.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I'm not going to get all angry because somebody calls me something I don't like. If I did that I would be dead with a heart attack before I'm 30. And I get it. You're angry about stereotypes and Lady Gaga. Big deal. I like reggaeton and I know only one other gay person who likes it the way I do. You think I'm going to get hung up on stereotypes and pissed off about it? No. I'm going to live my life.

    Seriously.

I don't use it, prefer to be called a guy, but it's not really that serious. Getting into a hissyfit over being called "girl" has a bit of irony to it, honestly.

I would like to add that i dont throw a hissy fit or get really angry or irritated when called girl. I just dont like it.

I would probably only be mad if a straight guy made the remark. Either way i usually ignore petty name calling and stuff unless the remark was used in a dergatory way.

If that's truly how you feel, then why do you let what is stereotypically considered male aggression define your persona here at JUB, and here in this particular post?....
go ahead and call me girl and see if i don't bite your finger off. fuck it, i'll take the whole hand then. i was born with a dick. don't get cute with me because i'm gay.
It's not what you're called that's important, it's what you answer to....
