I'm secure in my masculinity, if someone wants to playfully refer to me as 'girl' or 'sis' or something I dont mind, it's not really a big deal, even if it's in a rude context I don't care, that is the other person's problem, not mine.

I think when people enter a discussion just to basically say they think the people bothering to discuss it are ridiculous is being passive aggressive and rude. And you're frequently part of that crowd.

"Because *I* don't care about this issue... y'all are stupid for caring about it" is basically what's being said.

I only read back to the July postings on the thread, so this could be redundant posting.

I'm not a fan of the ghetto slang, and that is the same for bitch, girl, etc. Whereas I wouldn't argue that it is misogynistic all by itself, it's too close to the real misogyny to want to imitate it. It usually accompanies a fair degree of obscenities like shit and whatnot, which I also don't want in the combo-pack.

In thinking about it, I worried that it was just racism masquerading as good white boy manners, but I have not found that to be true. In my upbringing, I went to integrated schools, lived in poor and mixed neighborhoods, and always worked side by side with blacks, but I never chafed at just plain old everyday language, be it slang or ethnic or whatever.

But, at some point, a sort of ethnic pride seemed to have risen that encouraged "dat" and "dis" and "yo" and other deliberate mispronunciations that were intended to be taken as black and proud. It felt like a push back against joining the mainstream, connoting standard English with domination and subjugation. Later, those same trends adopted the ghetto slang like bitch and girl that had formerly never been touted as any source of pride, as they were associated with street life that entailed pimps and other out-of-the-mainstream people.

So, when I hear it, I don't hear just the affectations of gays adopting feminizing camp caricatures, I hear a push back that says "not you, it's a black thing." It is likely a trope that has long since moved on from that, but it evokes it anyway for me.

Then there is the whole "I can say nigguh but you can't because I know I use it satirically or with love, but you may be a white racist who is just condescending and using it to mock us" thing. A white guy is just playing with dynamite in the PC world that is where I work and live.

Others are welcome to their shade and tea party with the lingo, but it is just political poison for the rest of us.

Not all slang, just the terms you are bandying about. Ghetto talk is most certainly one of the types of slang, be it politically correct to still use the term or not.

Jersey slang might be heavily influenced by Italians. Louisiana slang might be more heavy on the French origins. Miami slang might come from Cuban influences.

If you don't understand that, you need to study. It didn't start with Italians or Jews.

Ghetto was a euphemism for black slums when it migrated from being a reference to Jewish ghettos, and plenty of black civil rights leaders used the terms when campaigning for better lives outside of ghettos. It was later that the culture was elevated to a source of ethnic pride.

The larger culture has been adopting black slang for decades and converting it to hip or cool lingo. Its the original hipster thing.

Don't confuse that for racism. It's linguistics, and it's hardly any different than Elvis repackaging black music and making it popular in the white population. It's called cultural borrowing.

And to my point, you could create a list of popular slang terms and there would likely be a generational gap between the young who pay no attention to language and its origins and an older group who do.
