Weather - why is hotter always better?

Today in my city the weather is perfectly sunny with a temperature of 78F. In the forecast, the weatherman says it gets "better" for the weekend with mid-80s. How is getting hotter than 80 always better than a perfectly comfortable outdoor temperature of 78? And then when it gets above 90 they practically have an orgasm. Yet after several weeks of it, the same people start to complain that it's too hot.

It probably has to do with the notion that people think more is better.

I really wish I could answer this one now that I think about it...but I'm not sure I can.

This always annoys me too. I like cooler temps not hotter. When weathermen act like mid to high 90s (or higher) are a gift from God, it takes all my control to keep from reaching through the screen and strangling them. I guess they think that if they act happy about it so will everyone else.

I'm good in the high 70's and all through the 80's. 90's is where I start to get upset. I remember one of the times I was in Florida - specifically Orlando for this particular memory.... And they had the ditzist weather-women ever (all turbo blonde of course). Who were UPSET that it was going to be 85... "You all out there be prepared it's going to be a cool outside...." - legit...I was so confused.

I wonder the same thing. Anything above 80 is just plain uncomfortable and brings higher air conditioning bills. I have a friend in Arizona who brags about the temperature being over 100. I suppose when it comes to swimming, hotter is better, but that's where the benefits end, as far as I can tell.

Try 100+ degree weather, then you won't be saying hot is better when you are cooking in that weather.

I am more of a winter person than a summer person.

Saying that, when you are trying to do manual tasks, and your fingers get painfully cold it can be a hindrance. That or if you are doing things like detailing a car, condensation from the cold is annoying.

But for everyday weather, I love the cold. In fact I slept with the window open last night. It was around 4-C (39F) I just had a single blanket, some warm clothes and a hot water bottle near my stomach. I slept like a baby and woke up refreshed 9 hrs later.

Enjoy the sun when it ain't too hot, too hot and you'll be wanting shade, and if it wasn't sunny you wish it was.

If you're out in it at least you can improve your Vit-D production, so it's better for you in more than one way...

It's the same over here. Except in Celsius.

People flock to the Med in midsummer when it's over 30C and go to Dubai when it's over 40C. Ridiculous.

I meanwhile can't even stand what everyone else calls simply 'warm' temps. When did 25C become 'warm'?

Give me 20C and I'm perfectly happy. That's just 68F and it'll do me fine thankyou.

I don't get this either.. I'm a winter person as well, and I have also thought that summer and hot weather is uncomfortable. You get sweaty and clammy, your clothes stick to your body - urgh. People always look at me weirdly when I say this because everyone apparently loves hot weather.

It's worse here in Florida when it comes to our weather forecasters. Nevermind that we're in the middle of a drought that's one high wind away from brush fires, if the day is gonna be sunny, humid, and hot, but not enough upper level help to make rain clouds, it's gonna be a good one.

I prefer cool weather, but not Northern Canada cold, it's easier and legal to dress according to the cold. If I adapted to the warm weather as I saw fit, I'd be charged with indecent exposure or maybe as a sexual offender.

So you are saying 75-80 is too cold for the beach? You say they can enjoy the beach better at 85-90?

    We've been having a mini-heatwave here and I DON'T LIKE IT. I can't stand these temperatures.

    It's 26C (which is about 79F) and it's TOO WARM. I'm sweating like a pig. It's uncomfortable.

And yes I know this is NOTHING compared to the U.S. with your 100F days. How you can cope or even survive with that is just beyond me.

I highly disagree that hotter is better. It's 28 degrees where I am right now.. that's 84 degrees for you Americans. And it might not sound like much.. BUT there's like no breeze, there's high humidity, plus I'm from Norway.. we don't have A/C here. It's LIVING HELL right now. I'm sweating every day. It's so fucking gross. To make matters worse.. it was 26 degrees two hours ago, but somehow it actually got HOTTER despite the fact that it's the evening.. it's 28 now. WTF

Hotter is better only on the weekends when you can go camping at the beach or a lake or a river. It's better because the change of temperature from the air to the water when you plunge in is exquisite!

There's a limit, though; we had some days when it broke 100 F (38 C) when I was camping by a river, and though the plunge when jumping off a cliff was indeed exquisite, by the time I climbed back to the top of the cliff I was sweating miserably -- and trying to sleep when the night's low was still in the 80s was futile.

On weekdays, though, 80 F (27 C) is the upper limit when I have to be about town.

I've experienced days like that, when a hot air high starts moving in during the day. Once when camping in the Oregon Cascades, the temperature started climbing at 9am one day and just kept going up through evening the next day, though it stalled for a few hours just after midnight.

It's currently about 29 C here right now.. or 85 F. I'm just thankful I have this and next week off. I'm dreading going back to work, but hopefully the heat will have passed by then.

given the choice, I'd rather be sweaty and gross in the heat than have to shovel out mountains of snow and drive on unsafe ice-covered roads in the cold.

Where I live in Canada the temperature reaches the high 20's for a couple of weeks in the summer and it is spread out only a few days at a time, so no one really bothers with air conditioning. There are only a few days where I miss it, but then the guest bedroom in the basement comes in handy. It's 27 right now. It was 33 yesterday. That's pointlessly ridiculously hot.

I did not know you would get those temperatures in Oslo because the ocean is right there to moderate it, but then that would explain why the humidity is so bad.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Maybe the weatherman man thinks that everyone likes to go outside and do stuff likes swimming, camping, barbeque etc.
Doesn't he realize that there are bees and wasps and flies out there during those hot summer days?

What do you do on days like this? Do you go to the sea? Aren't you at Brighton?

I've heard that London men go to the city's parks and "sunbathe" wearing underpants.

I believe you. I can tell the heat has affected your brain, because you seem to think that I'm an American and that I have even a vague idea of what the temperature is in Fahrenheit.

It's better than being cold... and if you have air conditioning, you at least have a place to escape the heat. If not, there's nowhere to go, and summer is just horrible.

Re: Weather - why is hotter always better?

I've known people like that. The hotter, the better. I told one of these guys "I think you're trying to find your way to Hell, even before you die." LOL. (It was one of those days that The Civic Center in L. A. was going for the record of 108 or something, and he was just absolutely rejoicing how marvelous and wonderful that was.)

One can dress to adapt to the cold much more than to the heat. If 20C/68F is considered the "ideal" temperature for humans, every winter there are always people who need to be outside for extended periods of time, and they may be uncomfortable but generally get along perfectly well if it''s -10C/14F...but nobody is going to do very well if they're in 50C/122F for the same number of hours. People can dress for the cold with heavy outer clothing. But you can't legally (with rare exceptions) peel off all the clothing you'd ordinarily wear in comfortable weather, so that method of adapting isn't available in hot weather.

Considering how I'm dressed at the time, would I rather have it be 15C (about 28F) too HOT, or the same too COLD? It depends entirely how long I'm in the uncomfortable weather.

If I'm in the miserable weather for just a couple of minutes, the cold weather is gonna be absolutely AWFUL. I'll be able to deal fine with the too-hot weather.

Make it more than ten minutes, though, and I'll be MUCH BETTER in the too-cold weather. I can be in too-cold weather for hours if I have to be (where I'm dressed for freezing, and it's 4F outside), but I'm not going to do very well if I'm in 99 or 101 degree (F) weather for three hours.

And I'm comparing 65 to 70 degrees below "ordinary/comfortable", to ONLY about 30 degrees too hot.
BOSS: I'm sorry, but I'll have to lay you and Jack off.
SUE: Can you just jack off? I feel like shit today.

Things that come to those who wait, are often left over from whoever got there first. (source: pharmaceutical spam 2007)

Hotter is not better; 17C-23C is ideal.

I agree with this. I feel the most comfortable when it's like 22-23 degrees C.. perfectly fine summer temps. But today it's 31, and it's way too hot. It's extremely uncomfortable. I feel like I'm gonna pass out. I try staying hydrated and not going out when it's too hot though, so that helps.

The advantage with cold weather is that I can wear nicer clothes; in fact I am much better dressed in winter.

With the arrival of summer I have the choice between either a shirt or a polo. Yet I am really pleased when the heat arrives. I manage to keep comfortable by keeping out of the sun, opening windows when it is cool and shutting them as the temperature rises.

Here I am living in the South of France where it should be hot and all we have are temperatures of around 25 and I still have my duvet on the bed. I am beginning to wonder if it will be hot at all this year.

After this last winter, so cold and snowy, I vowed not to complain about the summer heat. So far I have kept that. While our home is centrally cooled, I really prefer to have windows open, especially at night. I love waking up to cool breezes blowing over me and pulling a blanket up to cover us. Not to mention being able to enjoy the sounds of the birds and other nighttime creatures that you only hear when the house is not closed up. So far, we have had a beautiful summer with lots of rain, so everything is green and lush. We are now picking raspberries, too.
Everyone wants to be heard. No one wants to listen.
