Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) - Dead at 83

I just heard this on the news. I know he had many fans here:

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) — Maurice Sendak, the children’s book author and illustrator who saw the sometimes-dark side of childhood in books such as “Where the Wild Things Are” and “In the Night Kitchen,” died early Tuesday. He was 83.

Longtime friend and caretaker Lynn Caponera said she was with Mr. Sendak when he died at a hospital in Danbury. She said he had suffered a stroke on Friday.

“Where the Wild Things Are” earned Mr. Sendak a prestigious Caldecott Medal for the best children’s book of 1964 and became a hit movie in 2009. President Bill Clinton awarded Mr. Sendak a National Medal of the Arts in 1996 for his vast portfolio of work.

His "Nutshell Library" is a set of four mini books, and for little kids, the silly nonsense in it also hid that they were learning the names of the months in Chicken Soup and Rice, learning about the alphabet in Alligators All Around, learning numbers in One was Johnny, and a sense of caring in Pierre.

Elsewhere, his creative genius manifests itself in the cartoon series Little Bear.

I think Maurice Sendak brought imagination and joy to many children and adults alike. It is a sad day that his pen is now downed forever.

This was in my e-mailbox. I guess he drew more than childrens' books!

    IN MEMORIAM

And he sailed off through night and day
and in and out of weeks
    and almost over a year
to where the wild things are.

Very sad indeed - he was one of the greats. He hated formulaic letters that well-meaning teachers sometimes made their students write to him, but he loved genuine spontaneous letters. An 8 year old boy once wrote to him asking how much it would cost to travel to the land of the wild things, because he wanted to spend his summer holiday there.

Did you know that Sendak was gay? His partner for over 50 years, Eugene Glynn, a psychoanalyst, died in 2007. See for example the wikipedia article on him.

    RIP, Mr Sendak.

Sad news. I loved watching Little Bear. Whenever it would play while I would surf through the channels, I'd watch that over Jersey housewives

^Oh, I love "Little Bear!" I'm way too old to really like it, but I love it!

Mr. Sendak was definitely one of my favorite children's book authors. I loved Little Bear.

I did not know he was gay, or that he had a partner for fifty years.

    RIP

The man gave a lot to make childhood magical and exciting for millions when he himself described that his childhood was terrible. RIP

As an educator who loved to read Mr. Sendak's literary works to my classes, it saddens me to hear of his passing.

And I was also a huge fan of his books too!

He was a class act as a children's author...100% class!

As a former librarian I can't help but think of the elementary librarians who I knew that spent time drawing diapers on the little boy "In the Night Kitchen." When Sendak was told of this he was allegedly reputed to have asked to have one of those books sent to him. Don't know if it ever happened.
