    Homeland

Does anyone watch Homeland here? I'm usually not into political stories but I've read about the ratings and the strong cast and am interesting now. Still I'm not very sure...

Would anyone give their opinion about this series?
come now, my child. if we were planning to harm you, do you think
we'd be lurking here beside the path in the darkest part of the forest?

This along with "Walking Dead"and the the "Good Wife" are my top three favorite shows.

You HAVE to watch it. Easily one of the best TV shows ever. Literally ever. Clare Danes kills it and you will be so thankful that all the episodes of the first season have aired.

Get to watch those bastards back to back.

I agree. One day, there was a marathon of Homeland on. And I had heard from friends that it was good so I decided to watch. Great show, I don't know if I would have made it through the first season normally. The suspense would have killed me.

Season 2 doesn't start until September. May have to rewatch the whole season again.

I'm not really into political thrillers myself. I didn't give the show a chance until S1 finished airing.

BUT. I loved it. I marathoned it over a few days and just wow. It focuses more on the character drama and never gets too carried away with the political aspect. I really appreciated that, tbh, because I got so wrapped up in the characters, so emotionally invested. Seriously, this show is too damn addictive. I wonder if it can keep up the levels of crazy it brought in S1 in subsequent seasons. One of my concerns is that it'll burn itself out.

Anyway, it is highly entertaining/suspenseful. And the two leads, Claire Daines and Damian Lewis, are acting heavy-weights. I think it totally deserved it's win as Best TV Drama at the 2012 Golden Globes and Claire Daines deserves her win for Best Actress In A Drama Series.

You should give it a try, definitely. And yes, watching it makes you feel anxiety-ridden.

^ The last scene of the S2 premiere made me a little emo. I really like the daughter whatever her name is.

I seriously have no idea where they're going with this season but Claire Danes continues to be perfect.

I love this show but there's something about Brody's family that kills the momentum and flow of the rest of the show. I don't know if it's the writing or the acting.

I agree. Brody's family annoys me. The daughter is a shit. Always spying or suspecting something. The wife (who I love as an actress, especially in V) storyline is a little off because she is expecting a POW of 8 years just to come back and act like everything is hunky dory. That is the feeling I get from her.

This show is tense! I can't wait to see how the rest of the season plays out now that the CIA know about Brody.

Know what's weird? The premise of the show isn't anything I'd really get into, and I've had a serious hatred for Claire Danes for quite awhile, but still somehow I'm tempted to atleast check it out. It's those damn ads they've been doing for the show lately.

I like Brody's fam. I will not tolerate any negative talk about them, mkay.

Honestly, though, his daughter Dana is awesome with all her flaws and annoying ways because she has many redeeming qualities (she's intelligent and headstrong when it matters the most). It's rare to see realistic and nuanced portrayals of teenagers on tv shows. I think Homeland does a good job with this character. I also find it very interesting that Brody feels more safe with her than his wife.

As for Jessica, his wife, they aren't really doing a good job developing her but there is potential. The writers always fall into this trap when they're writing wives who are there to support a male lead. They always end up making them seem whiny, judgmental 24/7 and they make it so that their entire life revolves around their husband. Not only is this unrealistic, it gets boring really quickly. I really hope Jessica comes into her own with the politics thing, she seems really enthusiastic about it, a lot more than Brody. It's like she's gaining confidence to venture out and create a new identity for herself-- it really showed after the speech she made. Also, I'm interested in whether or not she will reignite the affair she had with Brody's friend.

Claire Danes is INCREDIBLE. She's just.. amazing. Perfect show. It's never boring, and always leaves you wanting more. The second season is intriguing - I've just seen episode 2. I can't wait for more!!

The best thing In my head to stretch this out is to now show seasons with Brody under CIA control being a triple agent so to speak but against his will. Everyone vs Abu nazihr (spelling, lord)

Who else wants the VP to find so bad!?!?

^ Yeah, Brody is now a double Agent so I guess Damian Lewis is in it for the long haul.

This weeks was crazy. I hope Quinn is kept alive. Damn, that shoot out was so unexpected. Either they have a mole or Brody is fucking with the CIA. Or both. lol

I'm sort of pissed that Brody and Carrie are becoming quickly attached again. Part of it is that they're playing each other but some of it is genuine. Odd.

Anyway, I didn't know that the actor, Rupert Friend, was British. He's really pretty.

Waiting for Carrie and Quinn to get together tbh...

And they're like "how did she just walk in to a CIA facility?" Too funny.

Anne Hathaway was pretty good at trying to recreate the Claire Danes cryface.

    Re: Homeland

^ lol, They really seem to have thrown caution and subtly to the wind this season.

The developments with Brody have happened way too fast and they've cornered themselves so, now, to keep the tension going like in S1, the writers feel that they have to go over the top. And by doing so, they seriously test our suspension of disbelief. That's why I can't see Brody lasting much longer on the show...Just how much more material can they get out of his storyline at the pace they're going at currently? They're burning themselves out.

I am just hoping Quinn lasts beyond this season...as unrealistic as that is.

  32. #32

    Re: Homeland

I found out today that Brody was supposed to die in season 1, but the writers were so impressed by the chemistry between Claire Danes and Damian Lewis that they changed the story. There clearly is no direction to the show and they are just throwing anything to the wall.

I have a feeling this season will somehow turn out to be in Carrie's mind due to the electroshock.

The plot holes kill me. On a show where they are surveilling everything, no one thinks to check on the tapped phone of the guy we all know is a terrorist and don't trust. Really?!?!

    thatgirl

    Re: Homeland

^ Honestly, I am not even surprised that Brody was supposed to die in S1. His storyline just feels stretched super thin in S2. And yeah some of the stuff is getting seriously implausible. Like not monitoring Brody's phone and in this episode they have highly skilled SWAT teams sweeping the warehouse Abu Nazir is hiding out in and they not only fail to find him multiple times but they don't even think of getting trained dogs to sniff out the place. And then Carrie goes in to a dark warehouse, unarmed with like a couple guys to find the most dangerous terrorist in the U.S. And then for some reason he can't over power her like he did the tough SWAT guy whose throat he slit, so he ends up getting caught.

Now that Abu Nazir is dead and gone, I hope they kill Brody off, too. I really really hope so. Or push his story off to the background and keep it as a side-plot and nothing more. And Brody and Jessica have officially broken up so that can easily be tied up.

Anyway, I think Quinn is having second thoughts about killing Brody for Estes. He seems to have developed a weak spot for Carrie. In the final shot of this weeks episode, he appeared to be conflicted as he watched her and Brody embrace in front of her house. Still, I think he'll attempt to kill Brody.

The show needs some fresh material to work with and new antagonists. Hopefully the finale sets S3 up to go in a new Brody-free direction.

    Re: Homeland

I will miss Estes so fucking much. I loved his assholish ways, he was like the only stable one out of the bunch and he deserved better. Saul is too emotionally wrapped up in Carrie to get shit done like Estes or hold her accountable for her actions. But perhaps that will change when he is made the director of Counter-terrorism.

Quinn...is amazing. It would be awful if that is the last we see of him. I knew Carrie got under his skin and he did the right thing in a way. If they have him return, would he believe that Brody was set up by the terrorists or would he be guilt-ridden for not killing Brody and inadvertently letting the attack happen? Crazy. Still, how the fuck is the CIA so inept in the Homeland universe? That attack could have been easily avoided if they did a basic security check. Oop.

I have no idea if Brody was in on Abu Nazir's last attack but it does seem unlikely since Carrie was the one who by chance led them out of harms way. I'm just glad that Carrie and Brody will be kept apart in S3. Their romance thing just isn't working and I don't want the show to turn into a soap opera.

Still, S3 will be about Carrie working to clear Brody's name? Sigh. I hope that is only one element of it and they move on to other stories/terrorists for the most part, since it was uncovered that Abu Nazir was only a pawn himself.

Overall, it was a great episode.

Good season, but I have this dreadful feeling that they are going to continue along with Brody. I agree with above posters, time to wrap him up. Interesting article I read the other day...we still haven't found the mole in CIA. Some people might think that it is Saul.

    Re: Homeland

^ I think they will be moving in a different direction for S3, at least that is the plan.

The producers held a press conference to answer questions about stuff from S2 and but said some things about S3 as well:

The (very vague) plan for season 3 so far is to deal with the rebuilding of the CIA in the wake of Nazir's attack. For now, at least, Saul is the acting director, though that's a politically appointed position under normal circumstances. If they can work out a deal with actor F. Murray Abraham, they might bring Dar Adal out of retirement to help staff up the Agency and provide conflict with Saul but the goal in the short term will be to show Carrie and Saul dealing with this strange new world, and possibly going after a different kind of target.

"One thing we might not do again is have Carrie try to stop or witness another attack on America," Gansa said. "We might try a different propulsive trope."

    * Again, plans for season 3 are extremely tentative, but when asked whether Peter Quinn would be a part of it, Gansa said, "Absolutely."
    * Gansa said that some of Carrie's behavior this season was driven by being on a very measured course of Lithium, where last year she was self-medicating and trying to let her manic genius out, and "There is this idea that possibly her genius is dulled a little bit by maintaining this emotional equilibrium, which we're going to explore next season."
Gansa wasn't willing to commit to the exact role or lack thereof Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin and the other actors playing Brody's friends and family might have in the third season. He suggested several times that Brody could not appear in the third season at all, and then return at a later date.

"I do think," he said, "that there is value in the fact that he's still alive and still in the world somewhere, even if he doesn't make an appearance in season three. And I'm not saying that's necessarily going to happen. But the fact that he's still alive would mean something to Carrie."

^ lol, Yeah it is kind of vague. But I think they realize that S2 was really all over the place and the critics have been very tough on it so this is their attempt at reassuring everyone that they'll be trying new things. Hopefully, they'll stop being so defensive about the flaws of S2 (to the press and fans) and just get back to the basics of what made S1 work so well.

    Fingers crossed.
