    The Lucille Ball Appreciation Thread

She was the much-beloved woman who made billions and billions down through time laugh, and was a pioneer and trail-blazer for female comediennes, even to this day. Tonight, remembering a comedy genius.

And good evening, everyone. I hope you are doing well, tonight.

In that special, high-end echelon of royalty for people only known by one singular name, she was, is, and will always be remembered as Lucy. And when she died, exactly 23 years ago, today, whatever lead story on the evening newscast of your choice had been originally planned, was very easily scrapped. When she died, an entire planet's laughter turned to sorrow at her passing...

Everybody loved Lucy, indeed. And, through the miracle of the advent of YouTube, she will now, literally be remembered for eternity...

    Share your favorite Lucy moment...

    Here are mine.

Love Lucy, her comedies were truly the funniest on TV and were funny without resorting to crudeness or loss of classiness.

I have every single episode of "I Love Lucy", even including the hour long "Lucy and Desi Comedy Hour" I LOVE Lucy so much! I swear, that show always makes me instantly happy... nothing any show today can do. I'm glad someone made her a thread!

I like the episode where they all go on a road trip and stay in a motel/cabin right next to the train tracks. The train vibrates the bed accross the room and they are holding on to each other.....

Also..the beef in the walk in freezer was great....

As well as The Diner and so many more. The Hallmark channel still has I Love Lucy(mini marathons) every morning from 4am-8-am....still love them all

She was a talented and determined actress.

Her early work as an edgy, brash "broad" in old movies was so unappealing, but she found her way to comedy, and left her mark for the whole world to see.

Much like Bette Davis, she was a bit scary in person, even before she grew old and raspy. The on-screen personas of stars reflects much honing, and to the credit of the one(s) creating them.

Lucille Ball was a consummate professional, and a demanding artist. She edited and re-shot until she got what she knew the audience needed.

I hope there is a special reward for those who grow laughter in the world, as it is a balm for the weary.

She was smart to stick to her guns and insist that Desi star with her on the show, the studio didn't want what was basically considered a mixed race marriage back them. Desi helped created the modern sitcom by using multiple cameras and having a live studio audience. She was a great comic actress. There are a lot of interesting tidbits in the I Love Lucy Wiki page. To me Lucy is someone special. I grew up in the hometown of Lucy, Jamestown NY. In 1957 got to see Lucy and Desi in person, when the they back for the world premier of Forever Darling. In was day we got out school to stand in the rain and snow to see the gal who made it big. Will never forget the opportunity of seeing Lucy.

My favorite Lucy show is when Desi loses his job and Fred, Ethel and Lucy dress in garb to get Desi back at the club. Fred in drag!

I love Lucy too. A while ago I bought the entire series on DVD.... all 6 seasons and the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour on DVD also.

She was a film star before her pioneering television show. She was the epitome of Hollywood glamor and very beautiful.

There are too many favorite shows to mention, but I liked when Lucy, Ricky Fred and Ethel went to Hollywood. Lucy gets a bad sunburn then models a wool tweed suit.

She was so cool. I mean, she produced her own show in the '60s or something like that. It must have taken a mammoth amount of effort to ignore the sexism of the time.

I wonder who could play Lucille in a movie?

As much as I loved the great comic bits (LOVED the William Holden show), my favorite Lucy was when she learned she was pregnant and kept trying to tell Ricky. When she finally did, they both got all teary-eyed.

She's my girl! I've been loving Lucy ever since I was in kindergarten, watching the show on Nick-at-Nite.

those were the good ol' days!

I think my favorite is the Candy factory clip, followed closely by the scene with Bill Holden. That cigarette/nose on fire bit was !

I LOVE THAT EPISODE!!! It's too bad that ILL was shot in the days before color television. I'll bet she looked as red as a Del Monte tomato.

Another favorite >> Remember the time when one of the New York-area newspapers had that lucky buck contest, where you had to match the serial numbers on dollar bills. They accidentally tore it in half in an argument, then agreed to go down to the newspaper office together and cash it in for the $300 grand prize. The laundry service came by, and while Ricky was in the shower, Lucy had sent his PJs to the laundry. Only problem was, the Ricardos' half of the winning dollar bill was off in the pocket of the pajamas! Lucy and Ricky had to break in to the laundry service, and Lucy accidentally got stuck in the machinery! I'll never forget how she looked when she showed up to the newspaper office - Her skirt had been spread wide across, and heavily starched, her hair looked like the NBC peacock, her arms folded by her side, her clothes were a mess, and she could only walk sideways. She was a hot, holy mess! And to add insult to injury, after all the fines and emergency expenses she and Ricky incurred, they all were left with $1 to divide between the 4 of them.

A true comic as well as smart business woman. The sad thing about Lucy is what you saw on tv was not real, what mean is the marriage of Desi and Lucy was one of roadblocks. Desi was cheater but Lucy stayed with him. When they did divorce they remained close friends.

This is supposed to be the only color version of the I Love Lucy show ever filmed. An audience member sneaked in their 8mm film camera and recorded a few minutes of the taping. When you see the sets in color it really looks different. I'm glad someone sneaked their camera in 60 years ago so there is some record of what the decor was.

Lucy was not only a singer, dancer, and Movie Star, but also a Very accomplished executive, producer, and director. She was the true power behind Desilu Studios, not Desi. She was the one who came up with the 3 TV Camera set up, and most studio TV is still shot like that today.

She truly was an Awesome being!

My gosh, has it really been 25 years?

The wonderful thing about Lucy is that she continues to live on in reruns...

And she is just as funny now as she was when any of her shows first aired.

I remember, as a kid, arguing with my parents to stay up until 9:30 on Monday nights, so that I could watch "Here's Lucy!" It didn't matter to me whether I was watching her as Lucy Magillacutty Riccardo, Lucy Carmichael, or Lucy Carter. It was still Lucy!

^ Indeed. It truly was a 'Situation Comedy'. All of the comedy came out of situations in which Lucy and (a usually unwilling) Ethel found themselves.

Don't forget that it was Lucy that pretty much single-handedly saved Star Trek. The first (and pretty awful) pilot failed; it was Lucy that saw the potential and managed to get the second pilot made. And the rest is history.

Desilu Studios was also responsible for many, many other TV programs; and more used Desilu facilities for production, including The Andy Griffith Show, Mission Impossible, The Dick Van Dyke show and more.

Re: The Lucille Ball Appreciation Thread

Some of my favorite "underrated" Lucy episodes:
-"Ricky and Fred are TV Fans": with the men distracted by boxing fights on television, Lucy and Ethel go on a series of wacky events in an attempt to thwart their attachment to the TV. After a choice "euwww" from Lucy after cutting a power cable and knocking out the power from a neighboring building, Lucy and Ethel are arrested with a cop mixing them up for a pair of female thieves, all the while the men are completely oblivious to what's happening around them, including Lucy bursting in for a split second to shout "HELP! WE'RE BEING ARRESTED!" before the cop yanks her out of the doorway.

-"Ricky Needs an Agent": solely for the brilliant sequence of scenes following Lucy getting Ricky fired from his movie contract while posing as his agent. Ricky goes on a tantrum and destroys their hotel room, shattering fragile items and bending a statue with his bare hands while Lucy eggs him on by reminding him of all the times she's goofed. He storms off and while she's cleaning the debris under the couch, Ethel comes in thinks Ricky's killed her. Suddenly, Lucy has an idea! Ethel: "How can you stand here in the middle of all this chaos and utter those four horrible words, 'I've got an idea!'?!" Lucy pulls a fast one on the movie producer and gets Ricky's job back and, when he returns later that night, he tricks Lucy into throwing a similar furniture-destroying tantrum after the place has been cleaned up.

-"Off to Florida": like "TV Fans" or "Agent" this episode starts with a simple premise of Lucy and Ethel carpooling to Florida after Lucy misplaces their train tickets, and then spirals into a series of mundane events made hilarious, with the snippy banter between Lucy and Ethel being the highlight as they sleep in the Everglades, change a flat tire (Ethel, after the jack destroys the hood of the car: "Is it supposed to do thaaaat?" Lucy: "NO, it isn't SUPPOSED to do THAAAAT!") and try to protect themselves from their driver, who they believe is a hatchet murderess (and vice versa).

-"Lucy and the Dummy": although character development was not a major concern of TV shows back then, I found Lucy's dilemma in this one to be surprisingly compelling for this age/series. A refresher: Lucy tries to fool the audience by putting on an act with a dummy that looks like Ricky, and botches it so hard that she's offered a movie contract for delivering such a comedic performance. Ricky knows that if he forces Lucy to turn down the career she'll never let him forget it because being a star is Lucy's dream. However, faced with obtaining the one thing she always wanted, Lucy examines her options for the first time and comes to the conclusion on her own that becoming a movie star would ruin her personal life and decides to pass on the opportunity. This was a surprisingly deep look at the human side of Lucy, beneath her wackiness and well-known desire for celebrity, and it's something that always stuck with me as one of the series' top moments.

^ I love all of those!

One that had me dying laughing, and still to this day does, is one of the episodes after the move to Connecticut - the runaway riding mower incident. I never laughed so hard, omfg... :rotfmao:

I've seen 'Stage Door' and 'Yours, Mine and Ours' both were excellent!

I just realized there's an I Love Lucy Marathon on channel 10 today. AGoing to watch the last three episodes of the marathon. I finished watching the Charm School episode and now they're giving the one where the gang return home to the States on a plane and Lucy pretends a huge block of cheese is her baby.
