    Dropped another nickel here.

Meanwhile, a couple of US Senators are alleging that the refinery shutdowns on the west coast during the summer didn't happen and that the oil companies were pocketing fifty cents per gallon extorted profit....

It's been steady but has gone up slightly. It was as low as $3.49 a week ago (regular, Chevron and 76) but is up to $3.59 now.

Re: Reality Check: How are gasoline prices in your area?

After some serious krona-dollar & liter-gallon calculation I have found out that the price here is $7.20 (a gallon)

I guess the price difference isn't as much as is used to be.

Re: Reality Check: How are gasoline prices in your area?

It was $2.84/gal locally when I filled up on Sunday.

    US gallon = 3.78541178 liters
    Exchange 1 GBP = 1.60509 USD

It's currently £1.299 per litre, so that gives £4.91724990222 per US gallon, or US$7.89341596021 = US$7.89 per gallon.

It was at £1.379 or $5.22008284462 per gallon = US$8.37868200508 = US$8.38 per gallon at it's peak locally in Yorkshire, UK last year.

No wonder Europeans drive smaller cars.

As harsh as it may sound I think gas is too cheap in the US. The world is around the oil peak and it's the biggest oil consumer in the world so I think it would be a good thing if they started using less of it instead of driving big trucks with "support the troops" bumper stickers on them.

    Dirt cheap at 93¢/L.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte.

The analogy's flaw is that American drivers go longer distances.

Also, the asshole Republicons keep defeating bills for expanding rail service, especially the high speed trains.

There is a high-speed railroad in China - 1,200 miles long. Takes 8 hours. Are we a banana republic yet?

Re: Reality Check: How are gasoline prices in your area?

Am I right if one gallon costs 3,29$ that one liter is 0,87cents?

that would be 0.66 euro cents.

FUCKING CHEAP in Austria we are currently at 1,45€ or 1,89$ per liter

that would be 7,14$ per gallon

I would drive like a big SUV if I would live in the US xD

They do. It's not that smart to design the infrastructure so people have to rely on cheap gas.

Everybody thinks gas is really expensive today but from a historical point it's probably still pretty cheap. It's gonna be a disaster for some areas more than others once it skyrockets. The end of suburbia you might say (unless we manage to switch completely to alternative energy in time, which I have no faith will happen).

No. The world isn't around the oil peak. That's pretty much a myth. And the US itself is actually going to be producing more of its own oil and gas domestically.

Not sure what you mean about the oil peak. There certainly will be an oil peak; the only question is whether the currently predicted one will match the real one.

Producing more oil domestically may not be that great a thing, either: we should sit on a large amount of reserves against the day the oil peak really comes.

A near term or even medium term oil peak is dubious at best, because it is said we've barely tapped into a quarter of the actual reserves out there, and with improving technology it could be easier accessed. Previously dry oil fields aren't dry anymore.

But still... we need to move towards alternate energies regardless. And with plastics (for example), use alternate materials. Oil is something we should no longer be dependent on.

Which is actually pretty sad. I am convinced without motivation we will not develop the require new technology. A declining supply and massive increases in prices to accompany that decline would provide sufficient long term non-party affiliated pressure to accomplish the required research.

Plus the new techniques being developed use ten times more energy to produce the raw crude we desire for everything from plastic to fuel. I don't think that energy being used to create useful energy is being done via clean energy means so we are simply contributing more and more to an environment that is historically geared towards rising temperatures.

All of that aside I paid a clean 2.84 a gallon when I had the truck and car cleaned and filled. I am going to miss these midwest prices when i leave here again.

Well peak or no peak the prices are going up pretty fast and there are no signs of it slowing down. We need to take actions today if we want to have the same life quality decades from now.

Um... prices have stalled out? It's $3.59 here and holding steady at that level. In fact gas prices may actually go down.

JayHawk, think oil shale reserves. And there are major supplies in Sub-saharan Africa that are barely tapped. Barring the crisis in Mali from spreading, this could help bring wealth to that region. But I think we really should move onto different energy sources.

We can make new plastic out of old plastic with a new method introduced last year, which will help. We can also make oil out of trash and get about $3.80/gal at the pump, which would reduce imports. For that matter, someone demonstrated making plastic out of (of all things!) leftover corn waste from harvesting (no idea what the price is).

Those will hold off the peak, which will probably not come soon for the simple reason that most of those estimated reserves aren't going to be economically viable ever because the cost of extracting them far exceeds the cost of solar power and other alternatives.

We should have started taking action when Jimmy Carter told us to, and kept it up. If we had, we could be exporting oil because we wouldn't need much -- or saving it for the future.

BTW, I like a proposal I saw somewhere (don't even remember if it was online or not): roof all our interstates in urban areas with solar panels. Supposedly it would give enough power to eliminate all coal-burning power plants.

That is exactly what i am talking about. Currently it cost more than pumping crude out of the ground and it uses ten times as much energy to make a gallon of gas from shale oils instead of sweet crude pumped out of a hole in the ground. I am not saying we wont get to using it but I prefer prices continue to rise so pressure is maintained to develop solutions.

Exactly. And this is why I'm completely in favor of alternate energies. Solar energy is something that should be invested in at af ar greater rate, especially here in California. We use far too much energy and while we do have some bold alternate energy facilities (like the wind turbines in SoCal) and some solar power, we can expand it.

Anyways, back to the prices... it's $3.59 right now... holding steady.

If you're buying 91 octane in New York, you deserve to pay out the ass.

Anyways, back to the prices... it's $3.59 right now... holding steady.
I saw an article that said California is leading the way on something that could replace 8% of our imported oil needs: roofing parking lots and parking structures with solar. The number seems high to me -- but we do have an awful lot of area devoted to parking; I know that one of the universities here did a study and concluded they could provide almost half their own electricity if they roofed all the parking areas with solar -- student parking, faculty and staff, street parking, and (the big one) stadium parking. That's a big number of acres which presently does nothing but wait for tires to occupy some of it.

There would be a bonus psychological effect: people everywhere wouldn't have to worry about being rained on as they get in and out of their cars....

Solar Roofed parking? Is that for private businesses? Like some sort of incentive? The first major places they could do that at are universities, public property and malls. The first two is government owned land obviously... but will it be an option for private businesses? One California State University has a major fuel cell project.

    http://www.csun.edu/pubrels/press_re.../fuelcell.html

It's a fuel cell plant that generates 1 MW of energy. At the time of the article, it was the largest fuel cell at any university in the world.

That's a rip off for parking. You'd have better luck finding a local lot that allows overnight parking (in a secure area).

Capitalize when needed. Did you help your Uncle Jack off a horse, or help your uncle jack off a horse?

True that more like the asshole of earth... couple that with the soon to be rising water levels and it will be little more than an overcrowded New Orleans without the good parts like Jazz, chicory coffee and beignets.

Geography made NYC what it is and now that same 'location, location, location' is going to strip it of glory. Especially when they fail to act. I will take the Rockies and cheap gas over congestion and crowding any day of the week.

Although i did pay steep city prices today. $2.94! lol

My point is: why would you have that kind of car in New York? If I lived in Astoria I'd just walk everywhere.
