I know I'm not really helping, but here is Israel we pay about 7.5 US$ for 1 gallon.
    Yep. That much.
50% of this price is taxes.
You'd think the government will invest in decent public-transportation (which if we did have would justify there prices), but NOOOOO.

Had to dish out $4.49 here today. That's an improvement over a couple of weeks ago, when it was $4.69.

Just how screwed up is our distribution system that the price can vary from $3.12 to $4.49, a $1.37 gap?

A wide variation in state fuel taxes accounts for much of the disparity.

I love my car - i take to the beach on weekends - and it affords me a flexibility that I desire

I'm not in Manhattan where parking would be $350-$500 per month

I'm in Astoria, Queens - 15/20 minute subway ride to east side and midtown - where I can park my car for FREE - yeah !!!

BTW paid $4.13 today - boo

I'm actually a low-life out-of-state pro-union scumbag from Illinois. Both Saturday and today, I was canvassing on behalf of Tom Barrett. (Please hold your applause until a winner is determined.)

Paid $3.55.9 at a Marathon station in Milwaukee.

If Walker wins, I will give serious consideration to relocating to Cheeseland so I can live under the best governor ever.

JayHawk, sorry your gas is so much expensive on the ks side and you can't buy beer at the convenience stores. You picked the wrong side of the state line.

So how does one explain what I saw in Los Angeles in September 2008? both in the very same city, and about one-half hour apart, I saw 3.49nine at one place, and 4.49nine at another, both at different points of Fairfax Avenue. (or 3.47 and 4.47, or something like that) Yes, two places exactly $1 apart, in the SAME city!

Indiana USED TO be noticeably below Ill-Noise, but nowadays it seems to have lost nearly all of its advantage. However the Missouri observation (and, to a lesser extent, Iowa) is still true. Nowadays the Gary stops are often less than ten cents apart from the Ill-Noise side (at LaSalle-Peru, Morris, etc.) but, out of principle, I still try to fuel there.

Further Indiana note: I remember when the pumps did NOT include the Sales Tax, and if you filled up with $6 of gas (yes, that was possible forty years ago...IF your vehicle had a HUGE tank and was really, really thirsty!), you'd pay $6.24 when you went in to pay for it. Weird arrangement, I never saw it anywhere else.

If I didn't want to travel, I CAN imagine living without a car in Manhattan. There aren't a whole lot of places in the U. S. that one can easily "get away with" not having a car, though. Portland is probably the smallest metropolitan area where such an arrangement is feasible. (And, if I could have voted for Tom Barrett, I certainly would have, but I live in that place that die-hard Cheeseheads "hate," LOL. I am in dread of the news that will come out in the next hour!!!!

Erm... I buy beer at QT and Phillips 66 all the time in Kansas. I just noted around 3.50 across those states... now that I am back in KS and it is middle of the week I just filled up for 3.25 a gallon.

Plus of my runs into MO I would say I like it but I really do like Overland Park... I don't know exactly why... everything is nice.. traffic, food, men, groceries... gym is like next door... it just works well. You should consider joining us one night around August 9th BTW... fun times in KC.

Frank Frank... the oddities of gas prices allude me but I have definitely been burnt enough times in Illinois to not stop there. That and confiscation highway freaks me out. I may just start driving 64 into Kentucky and up through Louisville just to avoid 70. It is longer but if I stop in Louisville they have an awesome gay night life.... meh... you make me think

JayHawk, I'll have to explain JoCo to you sometime.
I am quite happy in JoCo. the roads are all brand new, the services for protection against idiot drivers is pretty spot on, and the same distance from my house as the QT for 3.2 bud light lime or Modelo is a Metcalf Discount Liquor which has what appears to be every type of luscious liver lubricant you might imagine. No I get that everyone else around KC hates JoCo but having lived in a variety of conditions across about 38 states i think it all boils down to envy. I mean damn the leash-less dog park is acres upon acres of well cared for land with lakes to let the my little furheaded buddy run and swim. It's funny because at my doggy park i see regulars there who drive from your side of town to have a dog park. it's the little things. So if it is 3.17 for gas for all of that instead of 2.99... then cool.

Not that I ever buy any gasoline because we have a great railway system, streetcars in the cities and even every small town has great rental bikes for a few bucks per day. I take taxis about ten times a year, usually to or from the airport even though the train is faster.

I take it that is per liter not gallon? We use liters but I gave my local price in gallons (and US dollars) for the sake of uniformity.

    CA$ to US$ is $1.15/litre.
    1 litre = 0.264 gallons
    1.15/.264 = $4.35/gallon.

When I filled up at Mobil on Friday, it was $3.47/gallon.

Life is different BUT much of the difference in price margin is by CHOICE in those countries to force the middle class onto public trans and so the price is really simply a luxury tax. Different concept or train of thought. Large scale mass trans would not work or be able to be subsidized by almost half like it is in those countries the size of US States. What is really nice is a piece Sanjay Gupta was doing on GPS this morning about Natural gas. With the advent of Shale exploration and recovery we are shifting the LPG market from bully markets like Russia, Iran and Venezuela to places like the US, Canada, Israel and Australia. That will be the paradigm shift that we will see first. Definding these bully countries and democratic countries providing the product at a fair rate. Did you know in Europe they pay 7X the market cost of the natural gas because Russia has 'em by the balls? Hell we could charge 4x as much, make money hand over foot and it will still be a deal to the consumer.

    Hmmmm.

Big plunge: yesterday it dropped to $4.22, and this morning it's $4.12.

I'm still seeing people saying to boycott Citgo or Valero because of Chavez. We have a pretty big Citgo refinery here and all the gas stations changed their name to Valero because of the boycott threats. Gas was 3.239 yesterday. Valero and Citgo do a lot of charity work here. For every 40 houses or so there is a whole block that is a park. Usually baseball or soccer fields. They keep up the premises. I saw also that they donated oil to the northeast for heating in the winters.
Even if it is Chavez' company I like it and will buy their gas.

Valero Gas Stations= CITGO = Venezuela = Chavez

    By Debbie Schlussel
If you don’t want to finance the thuggish Hugo Chavez “democratically” “elected” “leader” of Venezuela, don’t buy gas from VALERO gas stations.
You may have noticed Valero stations popping up all over America. They are really CITGO stations. Because of the deserved stigma attached to the Chavez-controlled gas stations, many Americans are not buying gas at CITGO, and the stations are losing money . . . big-time.

I hear ya on that idea. It is ignorant to boycott a gas or a producer of oil because demand in this country is so high we will still get oil from those countries. They simply would mix the product and ship it everywhere at the refinery. So foolish at best. Cruel at worst because it hurts the Mom and Pop stores that live on the other sales and make barely a margin off of gasoline. I recall similar stories after BP decimated the gulf coastline IRT BP stores. Same thing happened to Exxon after the Valdez oil spill... and now Exxon is the largest oil company on earth. So the idea of a boycott is ludicrous.

living outside of NYC, I could pretty easily give up my car if I wanted (as it is, I only have to fill up my tank once/month), but it would make some things a lot more difficult (eg: 30 minutes on a bus each way to the grocery store instead of 5 minutes in my car) and expensive (bitch about gas prices all you want, but Amtrack is expensive for any real distance)
    QFT.

We do have somewhat of a commercial railway system but for passengers, it blows. Hell, my brother pays $300/month to use the train from New Haven, CT to NYC. When I lived in the city, I had a car for 1 year and then ditched it because it was absurd to be paying for a car, parking and then public transit. Even now, the fare hikes that start next year raise the monthly T pass from $70 to $120. Fuck buses and commuter rail also.

Consider, though, that socially and economically, it's already "acting like" summer - so what the calendar says really has little bearing on it.

Well I'd be happy to do without oil from repressive communist dictators, but then I don't feel any happier buying my oil from repressive privately-held corporate interests who employ the same tactics and immunize themselves from government scrutiny with campaign donations.

We have a pond. It's the Nueces Bay between here and Portland. Across that pond is an Exxon that is sometimes lower than anywhere else around here. Can't figure that one out.
Also, if Chavez was going to war with us and killing our boys, I would consider driving across the pond to Exxon.

WTF? You apparently didn't read my post. Chavez is not attacking our cities. If anything he is just hurting the people of Venezuela. What oil companies do you get your gas? Our Valero and Citgo do tremendous work for charities around here. Exxon doesn't. You could look at it that I get the cheapest and that what is Valero.

I just spent on gas today to have what I need for a fun weekend that used to get me down to Baja California for sun in the winter to help with my SAD. My poor gas card....

I did take Baja slowly, so I'd get a new month's income to spend along the way.

BTW, gas this evening had dropped to $4.04. (How so they decide on the cents digit? For months the price has moved by a nickle one way or the other at a time, but this wasn't divisible by five.)

Honeslty kuli i have no idea but I imagine after the price drops by the barrel then the refinery changes slightly and then the taxable amount alters slightly making the whole mess difficult to predict for actual prices.
