Re: Reality Check: How are gasoline prices in your area?

Filled up tonight at a Valero/Kangaroo somewhere in St Charles Parish in Louisiana on my way home from a fun-filled weekend. $3.159. Cheapest I've seen in the area, though I did see $3.159 at a Flying J at Exit 28 on I-10 in Mississippi. Most everywhere else is in the $3.249-$3.339 range.

    Saw 3.45.9 tonight.

Too bad prices are 50 cents higher than the national average.

Wow -- just got back from Fred Meyer, where the price has been dropped to $3.35.

The price has dropped slightly too, here in the UK. It was 127.9p per liter at our local supermarket.

    1US gall = 3.78541 liters
    1.00 GBP = 1.60238 USD
    1.279 = US$2.04944
    2.04944 x 3.78541 = 7.7579706704
    rounding up

    1 gallon is US$7.76

We've done a lot less driving by car this year. The service book for October last year and this October this year gives a difference in mileage of just over 1000 miles. The year previous, to that we did three times that distance.

Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I gas was that low on the west coast, I'd be able to afford a Baja trip. My last one helped balance my S.A.D. for several years.

With all those pipelines being built and one commenter of the article asks (another one being built right now through western Missouri) -- why is there such a stink about the XL pipeline?

I think competition is also a big factor -- we're fortunate, as I'm sure JH will agree, to have a great company like QuikTrip who helps keep prices competitive.

One thing people overlook about the XL is that if there isn't enough flow in pipelines to satisfy demand, the gas or oil still gets moved -- it just goes by truck. And truck transport is a LOT more dangerous than pipelines; that has become more the case over the last two decades as the safety of pipelines has advanced faster than that of trucks.

You know what is funny? That was seems like where it was when I left the country in 1997 to go overseas and I went to Hawaii first where it was already well over 3 a gallon.... never have seen the drop since.... glad I have it now...

My understanding is that XL will be moving a much more viscous (thicker) fluid in the tar sands. Because of that fact, because of the extra weight involved and the thicker effluent, higher pressures must be used. Higher pressure means more effluent leaks at a higher rate once it is moving and a leak develops, additionally it stresses the pipe much more.

Quiktrip is an excellent company. The SOP where each teller completes two transactions at once to keep the line rolling is genius. There can be fifty people at the store and I can literally walk in and out in two minutes. Hand the guy my card, say credit no receipt, and he or she says thanks have a great day.... THAT is an effective register. Walmart could learn legions from them.

I do doubt they keep prices low because New Jersey also tracks as lowest gas due to proximity of pipelines and refineries. The additional thing Missouri has going for it is the fifth lowest tax on gas. Although if you travel down 71 (49) towards Arkansas in Missouri then travel back up 69 in Kansas (essentially parallel routes in different states) then you can see where well spent road taxes can do well to reduce suspension and tire repairs. I swear at one point in Missouri on 71 I coulda sworn I was on a rumble strip for twenty miles.

The question isn't how many incidents but the amounts spilled and damage. Pipeline leaks are rarely in places where lots of people get killed or injured, but towns have been nearly destroyed by truck accidents. Here's an interesting article:

    http://www.businessinsider.com/oil-s...ansport-2013-7

At the moment rail transport is safest for long distances, though pipeline is fairly close. But trucks are dangerous, not just for the volume spilled but because they tend to be where people are.

To be sure I am not against all pipelines, just the added risk associated with piping tar-sands effluent. The research presented on one side says it is no less safe, yet the research on the other says it is much more dangerous. Statistically there ca be no significant analysis because so little of the thicker sludge is piped. That is changing and we should get a glimpse soon.

Here is a weird oooly I cant get out of my head.... with radioactive contaminated coolant water, we use a closed system that is contained by another system, then monitor pressure to ensure leaks are not present. We can shut down a flow path when a quart leaks out, and then secure additional valves to isolate as pressure drops in sections of pipe. It minimizes the coolant lost and requiring recovery. The secondary containment allows easy cleanup of the lost coolant. Why haven't the genius minds earning billions in the oil industry figure out a dual loop with isolation valves. An inner pipe with the product and an outer catch pan type of pipe to eliminate spillage?

Oh thats right ... twice the pipe = twice the cost, and even more cost for workers to operate such a system.... meanwhile spillage is ok because it cost less to pay off a town than to do things safely.

When spillage is acceptable to the company, you know the value of the actual product spilt is low, otherwise every drop would be saved.

Everything else is an externality as far as the company's concerned.

A cousin of mine is an engineer who worked in the nuclear field for many years. He happened to study pipelines not just in nuke plants but overland (some nit suggested using pipelines to move nuclear waste at Hanford from the plants to the waste field...). The big difference between the two from an engineering standpoint is that the lines in a nuke plant are rigid and stable, while a surface pipeline has to flex; the second is that the outside pipeline has a lot more variables to deal with in terms of possible "interference" (accidents including everything from ice storms to animals to stray bullets). At the time (a dozen years ago or so), for a surface pipeline to have as much safety as one in the nuke plant, it would have had to be triple-walled, and even then his team recommended a concrete half-pipe catchment running all along under the pipeline itself everywhere on the surface (with a flexible surfacing resistant to breaking).

In the end, what they recommended for moving nuclear waste was railroad tank cars, as not just safer but far more cost-effective. (Though that recommendation was constrained by the requirement that the waste be 'liquified' -- what they really said should be done was to blend all the waste together so it was virtually homogenized, then mix it 1:20 with silica sand, then turn it into glass... making bricks that wouldn't spread waste even if a train carrying them crashed.)

So making a pipeline as safe as the lines in a nuke plant is apparently prohibitive.

Driving around my town I found gas at $3.29, $3.09, $3.03, and at $2.96 depending what part of town you were in. That is unusual for there to be that much difference within twenty miles.

$3.25 is the best in town. The head guy at the pump said he expects it to go to $3.22 on Monday -- but two other places actually raised theirs from $3.27 to $3.29 or $3.32.

I think what went horribly wrong is called thanksgiving, free (-ish) market, and money making. Expect cost to climb into the travel holiday and then drop off again....

    99.9/Litre!

Which is awesome. Okay so in 2004 it was 74 per litre and we all thought that was crazy expensive, but much cheaper than it's been.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I am guessing with you being on the coast that the prices are always a bit higher.

Tonight (not at my regular spot) I filled up at $2.99 a gallon. Two blocks down the road it was $3.35. I don’t get why such a big difference.
