na .. just short sides, a bit longer on the top and probably some hairblower and styling mousse for the voluminous front.

Like a faux hawk kind of? Not sure, but I style my hair like that, at least until the top grows out so I can do my hair like James Dean as I usually do

I worked at a high-end salon for a bit, this is roughly what you would say if you wanted that (if you had no picture): High & tight fade on the sides and "3 to 4 finger lengths"/longer on top, texturized and quiffed.
If you want the volume, the person probably used a paste or fiber and used a blow-dryer and shaped it. Finally, set it with hairspray.

^ yeah, but it works more for just holding the form. gel always looks greasy or spikey
