    Attaching Images

This new version of the forum software has what is called 'Enhanced Attachment Uploading' set as 'ON' by default. For those of you not used to using this, or if you're having problems with the new image attachment box where you 'drag and drop' etc, you can revert back to the more familiar set up.

Go to My Settings (top right hand corner of this page) > My Account (on left hand panel) > General Settings *. Scroll down to 'Miscellaneous Options', and the third option is to have 'Enhanced Attachment Uploading' on or off. Choose 'Off', scroll down and 'Save'.

You'll now have a more familiar set up when adding attachments to your post.

    * General Settings can also be reached by clicking on 'Forum Actions' (below the Forum. Blogs, What's New tabs above).

    Fatal error:

    * File system directory "[path]/attachments/3/0/7/7/3/6" is not writable or cannot be found. Please create this directory; ensure the directory is writable or change the directory setting.

Unable to proceed with save while $errors array is not empty in class vB_DataManager_AttachmentFiledata in [path]/includes/class_dm.php on line 849

What does that mean? Everytime I try to upload pictures this happens

    Re: Attaching Images

On the page that documents "BB code" there is mention of an "Attach" tag, which "allows you to display an attachment in your post rather than at the bottom." I assumed that this was how people were displaying large images of their attachments in their posts. The documentation example shows what it calls an "attachmentid", using "12345" in the example. It doesn't actually show a result for this, though. Since, I gather from what I've seen here, posts are limited to 5 attachments (no one ever seems to do more), I thought perhaps the "12345" example referred, by each individual digit, to the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth attachments respectively. But trying that assumption didn't work. If the number "12345" is just a single "attachmentid", that raises the question: how do I know what the "attachmentid" will be for each of my attachments?

Secondly, it appears that attachments of large dimensions get scaled down to a certain size; am I right in assuming this is unavoidable with uploaded attachments?

On another topic, asking as a total newbie here, I've seen some very nice members' "avatars" -- is there any way to access the original-size source images of those avatars, short of asking EACH member whose avatar I like if he'd be willing to share it with me?

    Re: Attaching Images

OK, I see that when I "preview" a posting with attachments, the "mouse-hover" properties include "ID", so that clears that question up. I also see that the "Attach" tag merely places thumbnails in the message body, not full-size images. Apparently a plain old "IMG" tag is needed for full-size views, I gather.

But I also see that not only are JPEG attachments being scaled down, any animated GIF files get reduced to a JPEG (also scaled down). How do I prevent THIS from happening? I see that others HAVE successfully attached animated GIFs before; are these some sort of new restrictions?

    Re: Attaching Images

Well now it appears that if an animated GIF is within the dimensional size limit (700 pixels, I find), its format (i.e. animation) is preserved. I'm still gathering that the size limit is something "recently" imposed; in the "Josh Hartnett" thread, larger images are attached in posts #74 (4th attach) and #75 (1st attach) -- but that was five years ago.

Or is there a way around the limit? (I suppose "IMG" linking to an image hosted elsewhere would avoid this, but I'm talking about an actual attachment.)

The forum software automatically scales down attachments to clickable thumbnails within a post, however, as with jpegs, gifs can also be enlarged within a post in the same way as images, thus this

Name:	1D gif.gif
Views:	1122
Size:	950.9 KB
ID:	843471

    becomes this

    when [img] tags are used

    ie [img]http://www.justusboys.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=843471&stc=1&d=1341753 409[/img]

And of course, many members use hotlinking where permitted, thus avoiding the issue of scaling down.

Regarding the avatar query, avatars have to be a certain size and so members must create or find their own as the forum software doesn't automatically crop or scale avatars. If you're wanting the original source image, then it would be a case of contacting the individual member directly - but don't worry, you'll find that they'll normally give you the info you need.
