    US Marines in Australia.

I Know it is not breaking news, however the start of a small contingent of US marines to be on a rotational deployment in the Northern tip of Australia has arrived.

Hopefully this is not only a good thing for relations between us and the US military but also beneficial for training with our own troops. I assume it is also a base of interest for the US due to it being so close to many SE-Asian countries.

The first company-sized rotation of approximately 200 United States Marines Corps personnel have been officially welcomed to Darwin, with a ceremony at Robertson Barracks.

This initial Marine Corps rotation arrived in Darwin on 3 April, as part of the enhanced Australia‑US defence cooperation announced in November last year by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and United States President Barack Obama.

US Marine Corps personnel will deploy to northern Australia on a rotational basis for around six months per year.

In the future, up to 2500 Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) personnel will rotate into Australia during the northern dry season.

A full MAGTF includes a Command Element, Ground Element, Aviation Element and Logistics Element. Major equipment to support the elements of the MAGTF includes wheeled vehicles, artillery pieces, light armoured vehicles and aircraft, in addition to personnel.

Heavy equipment, vehicles and aircraft are not included in the first rotation.

During the six-month deployment, the US Marine Corps will spend two or three months in Australia, mainly in Australian Defence Force training areas and ranges. The remaining time will be spent engaging with partners in the region.

The US Marine Corps will use existing Defence facilities in northern Australia for accommodation and training. Defence will provide a range of support to this initial rotation and costs for this rotation will be shared under existing legal, financial and logistical arrangements.

Much more visits to Darwin in my near future, I see!

Darwin's a real party town, small but fun, so I expect the Marines will enjoy themselves.

Never been to Darwin before, nor have I corrupted a Marine. I see I can now do two things with one trip to the Northern Territory. *goes to webjet to book a flight*

This is indeed a good thing. I sure hope the inevitable shithead we happen to send over there doesn't tarnish the entire image. I supported a pilot program for Submariners to work on Aussie boats back when i worked in personnel. Sadly it was past my time to be able to go and live in Ausralia but I was glad I could help some guys out. That is one country i havent seen and need to see all of it I can manage....

Taz; at least they are in Darwin, they can have the women up there (edit, the women there might bring some out of the closet *books flights* ) yay for bushpigs!

Jay; there are enough shitheads that recruit in the army here and tarnish its name with issues that you would only expect from teenagers, not grown men and women. Although the media can be rough, I think they would have an easier time here. That and I'd say the media would probably be a bit more tight lipped with the Marines (it might be like it was with the media and police force when I was a cop, lots of stuff you will never hear in the public).
