ROFLAO It never ceases to amaze me how certain Christian individuals and organizations feel that their interpretation of their scripture is completely correct and everyone else's is completely incorrect. The same goes for individuals within Judaism and Islam.

It would seem to me that god could create a holy book that doesn't lend itself to so much confusion and mystery; something with a truth that is not moot.

It wouldn't matter how rigorous and logical a holy book was, humans would find ways to twist it.

Generally speaking, it tends to be two separate groups of Christians.

Good Friday -- isn't that the day Jesus died? I don't think that was Good Friday for him. I don't see him up there going, 'Wooo! Party! Thank Dad, it's Friday!'

Then you presume incorrectly, as the quote attributed to Epicurus is unlike his other writing, and it is more probable to attributable it to skeptic philosphers instead. Epicurus says that if gods exist they wouldn't be bothered by us nor want anything from us, neither prayer, sacrifice, or our adulation.

That description applies exactly to the creator described in christian mythology of the divine.

Free will is a relevant concept when deciding between two or more congenial, worthy, fulfilling, choices. Free will is not relevant if a choice existed, say, between infinite fulfilment, security, insight, joy, and contentment on one hand, and despair, decay, and oblivion on the other.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I dunno where you got that. Epicurus says deities would not care at all, which effectively is the opposite of what wool you're trying to pull.

How would you put it? "God is willing to prevent evil, but thou art too sinful"?

When you think about something awful like a child being tortured to death, do you really find that convincing?

BTW, note to god: maybe it would be better to treat us like toy figurines than to allow children to be tortured to death all the fucking time. Just an idea.

Let's go with this for a moment ...

Supposedly, we are created in His image. Each of us are a little piece of God. Therefore, He does have care, and concern, for Us, and how we're doing. However, not being a Puppet Master, He also granted Us "Free Will".

He passed down his wishes, and desires, for the ways we might comport ourselves, but also left it up to Us as to whether we would listen, and follow, or not.

We're also free to misinterpret, and even purposefully distort, His teachings. We are the ones left to create/manipulate the conditions in which we live here on Earth.

"Good" and "Evil" do, indeed, become evident through Our choices, and Our actions, because we Know how to "behave", but choose not to.

God is not a dictator nor interventionist. It is Through US that His positive intentions are carried out, or not. We are the physical beings in the physical World. We can choose to accept that Responsibility, or even deny and/or actively work against it.

What happens here is not God's doing, it is Ours.

Does this provide you with a satisfactory answer when contemplating, for example, children who have been tortured to death?

God chooses to do nothing to stop children from being tortured to death because we haven't comported ourselves with his wishes?

This is certainly a malevolent, as Epicurus says, (and petty) version of god.

There are better Christian reflections on our human state than that our poor behavior is the cause of all those innocents' griefs.

Ah... yeah... this doesn't do it for me.

I'm a skeptic, but as far as arguments like this go, I prefer the one that includes a chain of metaphysical realities getting less and less perfect as they expand, creating the flawed existence we live WITHOUT the whole anthropomorphized "we are made in his imagine" and "he loves us and gives to us, it's just all our fault."

The "therefore" does not compute. It suggests narcissism is the only thing that could induce care and concern for humans. I care about things that aren't even remotely similar to myself, and things I have not created. Is my compassion and love and concern thus greater than that shown by this mythical god?

Wishes and desires are different from requirements. "If you don't do as I say, I will give you a hard time about it when I welcome you to heaven, and maybe it will be a little awkward around the dinner table on the first night while we are waiting for the soup course" is very different than "If you use your free will to deviate from my instructions in any respect, I will ensure you face eternal torture and oblivion."

Good and evil are more evident through examining the existing knowledge of an omniscient being, period. Certainly more than through making humans the guinea pigs in a randomised trial for which no consent has been obtained from any research ethics board.

God is not a dictator nor interventionist, nor ambivalent, nor vengeful, nor compassionate, nor attentive, nor indifferent, nor mercurial, nor ephemeral, nor merciful, nor judgmental. God is imaginary.

If there were such a thing as evil, there would be no merit in providing someone with the free will to do evil.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Banky^^, I think you're letting your atheism get a little ahead of the discussion again. For example, while you might rightly believe that most christians believe in eternal torture and oblivion, I see no evidence (nor do I even suspect) that Kyanimal does. And so, until he introduces that particular punishment for bad behavior, I think it's a little unfair to hold him to that standard. As I understand the discussion so far, the consequence of our sinful behavior is the presence of evil in the world--not hellfire.

By the way, some christians hold the same position that you've advanced: there is no such thing as evil.

Oh, I thought kyanimal was describing that kind of religion, with as charitable a case as possible, not recommending it.

God wants to prevent evil, but He put us in charge of the universe and our own lives.

That's not remotely close to what he said.
