    router suggestions

Where to start? My netgear router overheats way too much. I've been able to slow the occurrences by moving all lan connections to a dedicated managed switch with the router handling only wan/lan data. But, it still overheats. Instead of hacking it to cool it, I want to just use it as a WAP and have a dedicated router.

I want to throw a cisco router in there but most seem to have more than I need. I just want a router that isn't a switch/toaster/lawnmower. WAN is 50MB/s so 10/100 wan and lan ports should suffice. I would like the router to have dual WAN but it isn't a necessity.

I was thinking maybe a box with pfsense, but I've more experience with cisco.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA

My netgear did the same and I tried Linksys(spellcheck) and did not like the connection speed and to hard to set up.

so we tried Cisco router and a wireless adapter and it works GREAT and very easy to set up and does not get hot at all. Great tech support too...got ours at Staples

Is the dual WAN requirement for aggregation or fail-over?

If fail-over; check out cradlepoint.com for their 4G/3G solutions.

If aggregation; I'd shy away from any consumer-grade routers and pursue the SMB grade equipment.

To start it would just be fail-over. But I'd like to have the option later-on for aggregation.

I think I'll just dust-off an ol'd PIII or P4 and go the pfsense route (no pun intended).

It's fun to swap toasters and work on getting the settings correct. Of course there are also the factors of bread type and moisture content. Also prevailing local atmospheric conditions. Is the butter cold or room temperature? Oh the variables! :P

^ oy, I'm still figuring out the ttt on the bugger

anyhoo, I've been playing with pfsense for the last hour or so. It doesn't seem bad at all and rather solid. As for ease of configuration, I'll take it over the little blue cable any old day.

Only drawback is the router I have connected to it for testing is so old, WAN is only 10base-T/half-duplex so browsing on the laptop is a bit sloooow at the moment. I remember when ISDN was fast as hell. Damn kids are spoiled these days.

Gah! I've not encountered half-duplex shite in ages! Ah, the good old days! NOT!

Good to hear the testing is proving out. If anything it's a new skill and great to delve into the "new to you" by times.
