Santorum out to "unmarry" same-sex couples

Maybe as an Australian I shouldn't comment on American affairs, but I know this site's views on Santorum. I have just recently come across this:

Santorum backs nullifying existing gay marriages

which is beyond appalling. Maybe I should change my citizenship so I can vote against him? (On the other hand we have enough appalling politicians over here who need my anti-vote.)

He's as bad as Margaret Court

And your comments on American politics are more than welcome.

Your opinion and comments are always welcome here.

Santorum is a rightwing extremist who will never be President. These republican primary elections are really about them voting for a candidate who is the lessor evil. Fact is, the republicans who should be running are not. They're waiting for 2016. While this November election may be close, Obama will be re-elected. His approval ratings are rising while the approval rating of Congress has tanked to about 9%. There are going to be a lot of changes in Congress. People are fed up.

and the scariest of all is, if he's the gop candidate, gay republicans will vote for him without a doubt.

People are not fed up with representatives whom they vote for; they are fed up with the whole Congress they do not elect.

    That's an important difference.

It's funny how often candidates run for Congress by running against Congress, complaining about how bad it is and how they will 'fix' it. So, while people are convinced Congress is bad, I don't think that will end up with significant change in incumbents.

All I can say is...if Santorum becomes the leader of the US, maybe it is time for all the beleaguered homos in the US to flee to Canada where the marriages are not under threat every time some talibangelical asshat thinks that their old testament view of the world is the right one.

Except well over 40% of Americans are confident their particular Congresscritter is doing a good job.

Personally, I think when the total rating drops below 15%, all but those approved of at better than 60% in their home districts should just be shot. Throw the bodies into an "anything to oil" plant, where they'll be of some use to the country.

What is it with this guy and his obsession with other people's private lives? He's talking about how government needs to be small and get out of people's lives, and in the same breath he wants government to become involved in people's personal affairs.

For Santorum, he means that government should not be involved in people's lives in any of the ways that would support or encourage a more equitable, open and free society.

But he plans on running the nation according to the old testament.

He is no different than an Ayatollah.

Truly: if government is allowed to interfere in people's sex lives and love lives, what's off limits? There's nothing more intimate.

So he should be happy with government dictating what food can be sold, what furniture is acceptable, what can be on television, what clothing is moral, and on and on.

He doesn't want the government to meddle in health care, but he wants the government to limit what people can do with their health.

When asked about gays in the military, the first thing that came to Santorum's mind was not the ability to fight, defending America, casualties or spreading democracy, but "young men showering together and sleeping in close proximity". Time to ship this man off to Marcus Bachmann's clinic I guess. Unfortunately, Dr Marcus will only work with cute young men.

The way that some right-wing Republicans are obsessing over other people's sex lives gives a whole new meaning to the threat of "a Red under every bed".

And this is the problem with the current Republican party. They should be the counter to the big government politics; embracing federalism, small government and individual freedom. Instead they have surrendered majority control of the party to social/religious conservatives who are anything but. Which is why Santorum and any other candidate that is the darling of the social conservatives need to lose and lose handily in both the primary and disastrously if they make the general election. The party needs to learn that the moral 'majority' is no longer the vote getting power it was the 20th century and move back to more true conservative principles.

Wouldn't be surprising if that's the case, though an exception I know pops into mind: this guy wants his sex life to be better than everyone's, so he has to keep up on what and how they're doing....

Exactly right. The right wing fringe has taken over the party. These religious conservatives want a Christian theocracy where the christian Bible and the words of Jesus rule the country. It's a christian version of Iran and Saudi Arabia, etc.

Republicans did this to themselves when they courted these evangelists back in the Ronald Reagan days for their votes. It took them 30 years, but they're finally realizing their mistake. The parasites are killing the host.

When people like Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, the Koch brothers are in control of your political party, then you know you have trouble. It's all about preaching religion and greed.

There's nothing wrong with being conservative, the the republican party in it's current form is definitely not conservative.

If it was the words of Jesus they wanted to impose, I'd have no problem: those can be reduced to the single word "love". But they just pretend to follow Jesus while they drool over Old Testament laws that are just that: old. Old, as in no longer applicable, no longer relevant. They were for Jews, and we're not Jews; they were for the mid "metal ages", and we're in a different age entirely; they were for herders and semi-nomads, while we're primarily urban -- and on and on.

Republicans didn't really "do it to themselves", though -- the 'evangelical' takeover of the party was planned and executed as a hostile coup. What's truly ironic is that these 'evangelicals' are the grandchildren of the people who denounced the "social gospel" as a perversion because it attempted to make the Kingdom of God on earth... and here they are, engaging in the same heresy.

    The more things change....

You know, we could use the "Freedom of Religion" argument to fight this idea since there are churches that do marry gays, and what he's proposing is government INTERFERING on religion.

Absolutely. But, see, those religions don't count.

I wish it would be argued that way -- we'd get real marriage equality, because there are also churches with polygamy and other arrangements. The government would have to just get out of the bedroom and the church, and shut up while it dutifully records our decisions about our lives.
