But now I think about it, season 6 was a big clusterfuck. LOL. There must have been 50 writers who had no clue what the others were doing. Who could forget the "oh-so-powerful, defeated-2-episodes-after-she-appeared" Mother of All?
Well it's because Kripke stepped out as the show runner. He has brought the five season vision he'd kept in mind from the pilot to fruition and as far as he was concerned their story was done. Clearly with plenty of fans, cast, and crew ready to keep going (and plenty of residuals bound to be brought in for him) he wasn't going to end the show so he handed over control.

And two or three episodes in it became clear that none of those writers had a grander sense of the boys "story." It became more "LOOK we're being mysterious" instead of actually being mysterious by NOT trying look mysterious (the way the show rather deftly handled Ruby in it's heyday). It all felt like Sera Gamble sent the writers on summer break with an assignment to each come up wiht three ideas of how the series could continue and then they executed all of them at once. It was awful. None of it made sense. They destroyed the characters and wipes out five years of consistent specifically motivated personalities.

I was listening to an interview once where Eric Kripke banned umbrellas from the set because he felt Sam and Dean would be too rough and tumble for umbrellas... that's absurd! But it tells me one thing that made me very at ease. He KNEW his characters. He knew their nuances their reactions. Everything they did they did because THEY would do them not because it would help the writers get to a point in the story that they think is 'cool' or is necessary but was difficult to introduce. Nothing was forced. Characters lived and breathed and acted and died as who they were and so they felt like peopel and we empathized with them as people.

I also don't think we've seen the end to Cas. They got rid of him way too dismissively.

I actually think it's very sweet.
No nothign was every played like that but I think one could make the case there was some tension to that effect. Cas had an unnaturally strong desire to please Dean. Their relationship really began as a one way street where Dean would mouth off and Cas just would admire his spirit and will. Cas sacraficed himself for Dean multiple times. Cas learned how to feel, experience emotion because of Dean. He resented Anna greatly, selling her out. I think there was room for it to be viewed that Cas developed a crush on Dean and I think that if it wasn't a major network show with 0 female leads that might've been explored.

I cried like a baby while watching this episode :'( I so wish there would be a way to get Bobby back! Can't imagine the show without him! I felt like my soul cracked there a little when i saw this scene, and when i saw his speach to his dad: "I adopted 2 boys and the grew up great! They grew up heroes! So go to hell!!"

But ultimately I don't believe that their connection, their synergy is rooted in romantic love or lust or a crush. etc

Would it be an interesting angle to explore? Well, that's what I have fanfic for but I'm not too keen on the idea of it being addressed on the show.
I don't know what fan fic is really for other than fantasy indulgence. I think there's room for such questions in a show if it hopes to elevate itself beyond bland procedural but I don't think it's strictly necessary. Either way they simultaneously PLAYED to it with subtle word play and increasingly obvious winks (Between Dean promising Cas he wouldn't die a virgin and Cas watching porn in their motel room it was obvious that the writers were Teeing up fan fic writers in their crazy fanbase).

But I think on a more SERIOUS level it could have opened up a ton of story avenues for the characters and explored fairly classical character acrhetypes in a new context. I mean think about it.... how would Cas an angel already in rebellion from heaven but never wavering in his faith in God grapple with the realization that he had "sinful" desires? How would he react when faced to admit to himself those desires are ultimately fruitless? That the only emotion he has ever felt, a loyalty and care that was so deeply rooted that he turned his back on his whole life turned out to be part and parcel of the great pain of rejection and unrequited desire? What does that character do with that? He doesn't HAVE emotions other than those that bound him humans a basic empathy which has grown with bits and pieces of anger or hurt but such things weren't cracked open and explored fully or explicitly. How does he now interact with Dean, this leader figure he has followed tirelessly? Does he still sacrifice himself for him? Does he allow himself to be bossed around because he believes in the cause or does he write that up to being part of his failed crush.

And how does it affect Dean? The way he interacts with Cas? The way he used to pour his emotions out to him. Is he still as raw? Is he hesitant or afraid? Would he still pressure him and manipulate him? Why? Kneejerk homophobia or genuine concern that such things would play up a dynamic that cuts his friend deeper than he realized? How does a man who's defined himself through his masculinity deal with the blindside that his closest male friend loves him?

It could've actually been a really interesting, intelligent, original dynamic. It could've been thought provoking, full of emotion, and fraught with harsh lose/lose situations. But they decided to just giggle and basically make coded middle school dick jokes.... which is a shame. Not that I expected primetime network television to explore the implications of such a dynamic. Especially not on a show that already has so little female presence. But it's a shame they tried to retroactively rewrite history and bulldozed the ample set up they accidentally gave themselves.

    Re: Supernatural's back, baby!

Well the time for this has passed. This is somethign they'd need to pull the trigger on circa season 5 but I don't think it would be at all odd for Cas who at the time was exploring what it meant to have 'emotions' and be human to wonder about the depths of his feelings for Dean. They were obviously deeper than for any person he'd ever encountered and traditionally such a bond as portrayed as non platonic love. So I think it would've personally been on par for him to be discovering such attractions.

Also I never really viewed him as "non-sexual." They always seemed to shoehorn the subject of sex in around him where it need not be like they're bringing attention to his ability to be a sexual being. Also I never would imagine any story would show Dean reciprocating the emotion. To ring true to the characters and the universe it would be a story about Castiel loving him and realizing the full spectrum of 'humanity' and 'emotion' and those traits he fought so valiantly for and to realize there's a downside to love.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that exploring the possibility of Cas loving Dean doesn't have to be "fan fictiony." It could be serious, and insightful, and intelligently even artfully done in a painfully emotional way but they choose to make it fan fictiony by winking at the tension instead of flat out ignoring it or acknowledging it.

^Agreed. I dont think Dean would be Castiel's bf but I think he would realize he had a love for him that was beyd friendship and brotherhood. Castiel once said it best as he described he and Dean as having a "profound bond".

Okay, so the show has been something of a disappointment lately--maybe that's pushing it, but whatevs. Either way, I still hate hiatus time. Last ep was a bit of a bumma...almost had the kid choked up, but fortunately I was riding a good buzz, so I kept it together Dick looking utterly DELICOUS, sitting in that limousine helped too. Personally, I think James Patrick Stuart's even sexier now, than he was damn near 2 decades ago--damn did I used to sweat Will Cortlandt.

Still love him to death, but DAMN IT, Jared's forehead is just outta control sometimes.Seriously. Been having somewhat of a renewed interest in Jensen lately. He's aging very nicely, imo...and lord knows how I love the dilfs

I think Jensen looks much more attractive now than in his Dark Angel days and I personally think it's because he has kind of a baby face. So even though he's in his early 30s he only looks like he's in his late 20s.

True dat. lol. He looked so average on Dark Angel.( But Jessica Alba looked her best back then imo.) And he looked weird with blonde hair on smallville, plus I hated his character.

They merged Jensen's thread into Jared's and into Supernatural? They're separate human beings.

So...did I miss something, or has Jared been kinda selfish with the skin so far this season? I really hope his Hollywood career crashes and burns, and he's left with no other option but to turn to porn. Str8 or gay, I really don't give a damn...I just wanna see da goods!!!

Damn...guess that's a lil' selfish too, huh? DAMN IT, though!!! It's just so wrong to have a body like that covered up so much....isn't it?

Do you know that I can sit through the Friday the 13th remake every time it's on? I'm THAT obsessed with that boy's body

Actually, Jensen could do to show a lil' somethin-somethin, every now and again. He might not have the body Jared does(goddamn), but then again, who does really?

There's a difference between nodding and pandering and sadly SPN crossed that line a couple seasons ago where it stopped being clever and started bordering on glorified fan fiction incarnate. Fantasies are great and all but characters should act to serve THEIR purposes as independent entities not the fans and not the writers. Entire story elements need not be shoe horned in for a giggle inducing scene if they break with the continuity or characterization that a scene is meant to achieve.

I love the show as a whole and the people in it very much (including most the behind the scenes people) but CW has a habit of dragging shows out long after they SHOULD be dead and I wish they'd put SPN out of it's misery so I could see what wonderful things the writers and actors I love would do if they were given new shows and fresh material rather than running the same story into the ground for the hundredth time.

Yeah I have to agree with you SN there storylines are kinda stale, but I still love Dean he cracks me up, Sam has been through so much shit until I dont think the writers dont know how to make him act anymore. I will admit every episode hasnt been that great this season but there have been a few good ones, SN still isnt as bad as Smallville in its last season. When the show comes back frm break I think I saw Cass coming back from the previews I saw.

Is anyone excited for the new season starting in a couple of weeks? I know I am!

This summer, on my days off, I watched the entire series from season one on...pretty good stuff. Let's just say, I'm totally hooked.

I certainly am.... I know a lot of fans aren't happy with the consistency of the show since the fifth season but even with some down moments the Winchesters are all kinds of awesome. Hopefully with Jeremy Carver handling head writing duties the stories will be tighter and have less of the occasional "Are we there yet?" feel but I'm optimistic we're in for a great ride!

Honestly, for me, the show's pretty much just been a medium for my Jared appreciation for the last few seasons. Hopefully they've somehow stepped things up for the coming season, but either way, I'm there. Hell, I sit through almost every airing of the Friday the 13th remake--and that shit really is one of the worst fucking movies ever, but my boy looked ridiculous hot as usual, so I can deal with it lol.

Yep, I don't want them to go on for ten seasons or something like that just because Smallville(which did kind of lose its way in later seasons at times) did. I generally liked last year, but it may be near time to finish it while it doesn't look contrived and gimmicky. Supposedly the boys really get on Crowley's bad side this season and more Crowley is more fun... Mark A Sheppard is just wonderful as the new King Of Hell. I do hope when all is said and done God is brought back into the picture for all the mess he's allowed to go forward in his absence..... in the Supernatural universe God has a lot to answer for...and deserves a few fuck yous at least!

Oh yeah, Genevieve Cortese being tapped to replace the awesome Katie Cassidy as Ruby definitely caused consternation for many Supernatural fans(though interestingly enough, not Jared who married her a couple of years back)I love the actress Rachel Miner who plays sassy demon Meg....I agree the shows characters work because for the most part they really are well cast. One other character I had trouble with was the grandfather to Dean and Sam played by Mitch Pileggi who I love but the character who had been pulled down from heaven and pressured to work for Crowley didn't work very well at all. He was so cold and unfeeling towards his grandsons....his wrath for Mary's death were his own flesh and blood,he'd see them die if he could get his daughter back....how would she feel about the harm her father would allow to happen to her own boys? She gave her life to keep them both safe, especially Sam who the demons were especially eager to get their hands on. Then the writers just offed him in midseason, as his character was written into a corner he had become so loathesome.

I'm excited for the new season. I've read a few spoilers and I like the overall story arc but where do they go next?

I like the idea of bringing God back in the picture. That could be interesting.

On a sidenote, I believe I have found my two favorite episodes. And ironically they are from Season 6. 'Weekend at Bobby's' and 'The French Mistake' are easily the best episode they've done (well, besides season 5 finale).

"Weekend at Bobby's" was great.... loved Rufus and Sheriff Mills interplay with Bobby, and of course the humor, the interplay with Crowley, the boys standing behind Bobby against Crowley....it really worked so well on a nmber of levels. "The French Mistake" was superb, love the self-referencing nods and in jokes that the fans loved. Two really good episodes ... don't know if they're the best but certainly among them!

I believe there will be an episode dealing with Dean and Castiel's time in purgatory, though from what was shown in snippets last night we know it was very rough and unpleasant. A nice opener, not as explosive as last year's introducing the Leviathan threat but seeing that Crowley will be the central bad guy is very interesting as he will use all at his disposal to prevent Kevin(the young prophet) and the Winchester boys from banishing the demons back to hell and sealing the doorway to hell forever. With all the times the boys have been dead and back funny to see Dean adamantly proving he was really himself to Sam once they were reunited. Interesting to see developing that purgatory resident who had Dean's back and got him out through that special portal for humans designed by God(as humans it was revealed are not meant to remain in Purgatory)....what he does now he has his life back and has to deal with humanity again.

Re: Supernatural / Jensen Ackles / Jared Padelecki [merged]

I have caught up with the first two episodes and am trying to catch up with the others.

    Episode 1.
I think the showrunners were trying to get to the point rather than linger too much on schmoozing the fans with reunion overload. Sure there are some familiar elements from seasons past that have returned; Dean back from another realm of existence, the lapse in time. Some elements have been turned on their side such as Sam's turn to have a life outside of hunting and not looking for Dead which sort of mirrors Dean's life back at the start of S6.

I found the new character of Benny an interesting and mysterious addition to the line up, let's hope he isn't a big disappointment.
I felt that the Kevin character has grown since last season and I love that Crowley is back to being a big nasty.
The big questions raised in this episode were why and how are Dean and this Benny so close?
What happened to Castiel and is he truly caput this time around?

    Episode 2.
I actually enjoyed this episode more than the first episode because it had more fun elements to it. The flashbacks are an interesting way of peeking back into what happened with Dean and his new pal Benny and of Castiel's whereabouts.
I liked the addition of Kevin's mom but felt she was kind of scuttled away too soon. She was starting to remind me that other characters can be just as ace as Sam and Dean. I hope the writers see this and give room for new characters to flourish instead of parading around characters that we have seen before and who have very little relevance to the story anymore. Bobby is gone, at least for now and I don't miss him all that much.

BTW. I hope Sam was smart enough to keep Thor's Hammer for a rainy day. There were a lot of items still lingering in that place that it would have been stupid for them not to lift any of them for future use later. It could also offer more story elements for the writers if they went that route. Such as the original owners and or relic hunters/traders coming after them for that stolen property.

Btw, does anyone think Sam's reluctance to close the gates of hell have anything to do with him having some demon in him?
I mean, is that even still on the table at this point?

The new showrunner Jeremy Carver has promised a three season arc and I do hope that he gets to tell that arc. Sure, stinker episodes are to be expected but most tv shows have them anyway. I just hope that viewers quit whining for once and allow the show to grow beyond the fan service that has suffocated the show.
I can only hope that Castiel is finally put to bed this season out. It seems that Bobby has been put to sleep for good too so we shall see.
New characters need a chance to shine and I felt Ep.2 reminded us of that, Mrs. Tran was ace until they took her spinach away.

Why do female badasses get a tough time on this show?

I like doing any tv series as a marathon and find it is fun that way too. However, I have been trying to keep up with the latest episodes. I know I will be pissed off come mid-season break.

As for the series stretching out to season 10, I stopped worrying about stuff like that and leaving it to the showrunners to bring out some surprises and generally bringing newer and bolder ideas with each season. So bring it on!

I know I'm a little late but I just started watching the show and finished 5 episodes so far.

So far I've only liked two of them but I hear the show gets better in season 2 so I'm gonna give it a chance.

Of course there is enough eye candy to keep me watching until then I love the chemistry between the guys.

The 2nd and 4th were voted the best seasons on this big poll I found.

Even if I stop liking it after the 4th... I still have like a 100 episodes to watch until I have to cross that bridge

This week has the return of last season's delightful lesbian superhacker Charlie Bradbury, played by Felicia Day(besides being a well liked genre actress is also big in the internet community as well). Seems to be a little lighter fare (set in a Renaissance fair with a nasty twist, of course).

The Wincest thing is funny to me, but the chemistry even if not sexual is there between the leads. The writers have even poked fun at the Wincest phenomenon a few times...there's always a lot of wink, wink fun in the scripts. That gif posted by Laufey indeed is hot, and I cannot deny that the guys really have that factor that motivate my libido some, though the characterizations and relationships between the Winchester boys, Bobby, Castiel and others really are why I'm hooked on the show. Seems to be settling into a good phase now though the past two seasons were hit and miss. Still, uneven or not SPN is still often fun and compelling.

Really liked tonight's episode, and the ending was fun to see(no spoilers here). Charlie Bradbury( Felicia Day) is a great kick ass character and though this episode was a diversion from the really dark stuff facing the Winchesters it was a pretty damn entertaining one!

I thought this season started out well. But this last episode? Come on. I know they usually do something goofy for Halloween - but OZ; the wicked witch, Dorothy? Really? This was pretty lame. Do you think this was the "jump the shark" show?
