I also agree with the critique of Michael Cole's commentary. The only person I liked less than Michael Cole was "Ole J.R." because he constantly made up his own words. A good commentator shouldn't sound so asinine.

J.R. and asinine don't go together.

A good commentator should reach his audience, be interesting, able to be heard, know the action, and if he wants to coin a phrase or two and put it into the lexicon of the business and beyond, hell, that's even better.

As far as the WWE goes(in my lifetime), the only man more interesting and informative on commentary was Gorilla Monsoon. And he did all that and more.

King & Cole are just plain awful. They switch from bickering to getting along way too often. It's ridiculous. I'd take a Tony Schavione broadcast over having to listen to those two.

I'm from the newer generation, so I started watching wrestling around 2000. I loved when Jerry Lawler and JR were the commentators. But I do agree that Heenan was amazing. Michael Cole is just awful. I understand that WWE wants him to be a Heel Commentator, but he takes it too far, and it just gets annoying. He completely takes away from the wrestling, and I cannot bear to watch when I know he's talking out of his behind. I read online that during the shows, someone is feeding lines to Cole. Which is RIDICULOUS.

Tony Schiavone was very good earlier in his career. As WCW started to go down... so did his announcing. But I thought he did a great job... a very traditional/conservative type announcer, but not boring. That's why he was able to cross over to baseball so well.

Fair enough, but I disagree. J.R.'s commentary doesn't move me in the least. To me he sounds asinine.

No kidding. I get the angle that they are taking with Cole, but he's more annoying than anything...

Yep, Cole should have been taken out of the commentary booth months ago. He could make a perfectly good manager, but as a commentator he makes watching unbearable at times.

Someone is feeding lines to ALL of the commentators. This is nothing new. This has been done for YEARS actually. Ever heard of the Gorilla position? The guys there feed lines and such to the commentators. Not EVERYTHING they say, but certain things, such as things to hype upcoming matches, PPVs, etc., as well as certain storyline facts related to the wrestlers in the ring. They have people in their ear, as well as a script in front of them. Again, nothing new.

It just takes a great commentator to be able to take those notes and make them their own, as well as input their own stuff.

Sometimes I wonder if Vince McMahon even watches any of his past WWF shows from the 80s/90s and ever ask himself, "What the fuck have I done to my company?"

I don't understand you people. The commentary team of JR and King was my favorite, but definitely pre-PG for both. King was much more fun when he was talking about puppies and I've always loved JR. Cole and Booker are by far the worst I've heard. Even Taz and that old man from TNA are less annoying.

I think heel commentary is always difficult. I think they're over doing it with Cole who is actually quite talented. Cole has been voice of Smackdown for years and only now are people calling for him to be sacked. I think that Booker T is a much, much worse on commentary.

I like King & JR but I feel King's references and jokes are becoming tiresome. I think JR is a nice, solid voice but the more appearances he makes, the more a fool he makes of himself.

I think having a good guy and bad guy on commentary works well. Back in the day when King was an ass-kisser and JR was on the other side it worked well. I loved it. Because they were still friends but they argued, specially during Austin/McMahon fued. They need to find a balance with Cole.

Balance is key. The problem is that they've basically got two colour commentators on RAW. You need one guy that's calling the action as it is, pushing storylines and pushing PPVs. The JR/King dynamic was great because you had King either being a heel (earlier in their pairing) or he was more animated and over the top, while JR was calling the action. Michael Cole as a heel on commentary would be fine, if you toned him down slightly and paired him up with someone strong enough to get the main points of the show over.

I think he has the potential to be great - he's got a natural ability to put the wrestlers over, something that seems lacking in the rant-heavy commentary of the likes of Cole and Booker currently.

He just needs to tone down the references - whilst it might please him to slip in references to obscure 1970s wrestlers, it flies over the head of much of the younger audience, and must alienate casual viewers and those new to the product (something I'd be wary of - part of the appeal of pro wrestling is that on any given night, you can tune in and watch a good guy beat up a bad guy; the storylines enhance it, but are ultimately not necessary to enjoy the show.)

I think that's why they're using Josh Mathews and Matt Striker on NXT commentary as of late; they have a good dynamic, but both need work on their respective roles, and NXT is a fairly low-pressure training ground.
