The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Has anyone got this yet? If so do you use the remote like a paddle or like a sword and a paddle?

Anyways any thoughts on the game?

No, it comes out today, I just can't get it until Wednesday as I won't have the cash until then.

I will. However, Ariel and I will have to determine who plays when.

I've been avoiding reviews and vids on game sites as I've not wanted to deal with spoilers.

All that said, I am looking forward to it.

That's why I went with the collector's edition. It comes bundled with a Wii Motion + and it was cheaper to go that route than to buy the game and a Wii Motion + separately.

And the the music CD is included as well.

We played the first three temples this weekend. Over all it is a great game and the motion-control works mostly good. However there are a few weak points, too. I am mainly annoyed by the fucking unprecise analog stick. I swear every d-pad is better. The graphics aren't too good either, and there are a few annoyances like that bird-flying (takes too long, needs too much control) and that VERY annoying help-thing-avatar. "Hey there, master. I have something to say. I have to say that I am 95% annoying. Also let me remind me of the obvious thing like .. your hearts are empty!". The story so far is a bit weak, but I hope it gets better. The puzzles and worlds are good, but the temples seem to be a bit too short. At least for my taste, this is my first "3D Zelda" I have only played all the 2D parts until now.

Well, I got the game yesterday and it's pretty great, so far! The motion controls are way good and work very well in the game. The graphics are good, I mean, we can't expect much more than what we are getting now. The painting style of the graphics works really well when you see things from a distance.

I do agree with Corny that the bird flying could have been way better. It's just kind of a hassle and not as fun as it could have been. v.v That's my biggest disappointment so far. I've only gone through one dungeon, you could say. But now the big worlds are all one big dungeon, too, in a way. And that actually works really well and the transitioning is very smooth because of it.

And I do hear the story does pick up until about after the first three dungeons or so....

I love Fi's percentages, though. XD It's funny, but yeah, she will try and alert you if your hearts are running low, sometimes.
Overall, it feels like a fresh game and new experience. I will have more to say as I continue to play and discover all the little interesting things around.

One of the game sites I visit regularly has people commenting about having to wait for shipment from Amazon as well, so you're not alone.

The reviews from players on that site has been, in the main, positive.

Does that mean you don't use the remote like a paddle?

I have a bad wrist so I am trying to find out if I could even play the game. I saw one ad that had a guy swinging the remote like a sword, but I don't know if the game has to be played that way or not.

What do you mean like a paddle?

But, yeah, you are gonna be swinging the remote all over. And movements are more precise, so you have to be more precise. My arm already kinda hurts from it....>.>

A control paddle. From the looks of it though they are called game controllers now.

Interestingly, there's some rather lively discussion online about the controls. Some reviewers are not happy, others think it's great.

There're a couple of guys who didn't give the control scheme a very good grade and they're catching a lot of flack for it.

One guy said he had to keep calibrating his Wii Mote + but there are others saying they've had no problem at all and absolutely love the control scheme.

My guess is it's what you personally prefer.

For example, I got a copy of RE: 5 when I purchased our 360. I played the game for half an hour and was SO frustrated with the control scheme that I put the game down and never picked it up again eventually giving the game to Ariel's b/f.

I also bought RE: 4 for the Wii when it came out and absolutely loved the control scheme... so, be aware I guess.

I have to make one correction - yep the story does pick up a bit, after doing the first temples and getting the first flame - it's a lot better. With the controls I am still not too happy, but some exercise made them less frustrating. I had to recalibrate the wii mote once in the last boss-fight (sand scorpion) because it was always running wild with the wind amphore, making me blow in a circle as soon as I moved right

I loved the whole mine/desert world. BUT ... the temple, again was pretty small.

Well, I may have a bad copy because the game looks absolutely terrible.

Horrific jaggies, pixilation, and pixil glitches as well.

Gamecube games look better... N64 games look better. It's a godawful mess.

I think I'll be returning it.

Good heavens no. I bought the Wii when it first hit retail back in '06.

The first game I picked up was Zelda: Twilight Princess, which looks infinitely better than Skyward Sword.

Both Mario Galaxy games look far superior in comparison as does Zelda: Wind Waker.

I'm surprised at how awful Skyward Sword looks. As mentioned, very bad jaggies and terrible pixilation... especially in Skyloft... but the jaggies are Everywhere regardless of if I'm in Skyloft or down below.

Not impressed at all, at all.

I will agree with the Pianist too on the graphics. There are times when it looks as bad as PS1 graphics (I first noticed this in the Bazaar). After the frustration I vented about in the gay gamers unite topic in Nintendo's failure to embrace HD is glaring, I'm not surprised by his comment.

I do admit that the game does sometimes have some shortcomings graphics-wise, but overall, I still find it really nice to look at. Especially in those areas where you are meant to just stare at the scenery. The Wii graphics are pretty much Gamecube graphics, anyways. XD

When I go from playing a game like Skyrim (on PC of course) to Skyword Sword, it makes SS seem like it was made 5+ years ago graphics wise.

So I just beat the first temple and the camera in the game makes me to kick my dog at times, especially in close quarters. That is just one thing I cannot stand in this game is a clunky camera. I remember in the GC/N64 days where you could hit C^ and it would set your camera to facing the direction Link was. Oh well. Still a decent game.

Well, the Wii does its best with what it has. It can't ever reach Skyrim graphics, of course. Nintendo should've made the Wii HD in the first place. :/

Yeah it took me a bit more to get used to the controls. I dunno if it is just me but I find the controls to either go from hypersensitive (angling to throw a bomb) to really sluggish (balancing anything). Trying to do that pumpkin carrying sidequest is just stupid.

Ariel will be taking the game to her b/f's. He has a Wii hooked up to a HD TV; comparison time.

Our WIi has lately been making a serious buzzing noise whilst in operation. It's MOST annoying so perhaps the unit is going?

Dunno if that would affect the display or not.

I've seen vids of the game, supposedly in play and what I see presented is NOT what I'm seeing on our TV. I'll try and take a pic or two of our TV screen with the game up and running but I don't know how well it'll translate.

However, it may give you an idea and you can let me know if what we see is comparable to what you see?

I have no problems with the scarab at all but the whole balancing thing is just frustrating. I dunno if it has to do with the fact that my couch/futon is lower than my TV set (hardly play my Wii). I almost think it is impossible to walk perfectly across a tightrope. The more I play this game, the more it feels like an amalgamation of all the Zelda games in a good way.

I finished the mining facility just now and that was a doozy of a puzzle dungeon. I will say, the puzzles in this game are far more difficult than any other Zelda I've played.

Just saw your post Corny and I know playing the harp is fucking bitch. Even trying to learn the first song I struggled. A neat idea, poorly executed.

We got stuck a few times at the beginning. But now we proceed quite well. The "mining" puzzle style will continue in the sand ship .. where I hated them

Yeah, even learning how to kill the enemies in there is a puzzle. Knowing you have to slash at the beamos (I'm so used to bombing them in the previous Zeldas) and then the flying bug with the missiles and bombs was a pain too.

I will add another thing to my control frustration too since I just unlocked the fun fun mini-game: controls while falling suck or maybe I just don't really get how they work.

I just finished the fifth dungeon and so far the only problem I have is controlling Link while he's falling.

The harp isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I had a lot of trouble the first time I had to play it but once I realized that I had to move the wiimote a bit before the ring of light moves back in/out playing the harp is a lot easier.

One thing a really like about the game is that each item is still useful as you progress through the game. Sometimes I bust out the Gust Bellows and use them against the bokoblins, I use the slingshot to stun the dekubabas, and it's fun using the whip to steal treasures from enemies.

Just finished the sixth dungeon and the stuff right after and the game got way better for me, story-wise. Very interesting to hear the beginning of it all. ^.^ And even a tad emotional, haha.

Okay, Ariel was attempting to play the game for the first time tonight and I took a small handful of pics.

I'll try and size and u/l them later.

Well their body-parts basically show it. BUT .. you can also directly shoot the eye with the bow

Ugh .. we are trying to receive the baby rattle. And you need to control a fall here. It's fucking impossible if you ask me.

With the rings I didn't have any problems either. That duet on the pumpkin island is a different story ..

Oh, in case anyone is wondering, I'm just in the first dungeon. Haven't even made it past the small spiders yet.

I've not played the game now since last Friday as the graphics have left me less than pleased and are taking away from my enjoyment of the game.

I'm also not keen on having to mind my shield so much so some game play mechanics I'm still not convinced about.

You don't really need the shield that much. If you master it however, much becomes easier. And it is imho needed for defeating the mechanical pirate boss on the desert ship.

    Ack! Spoilers!

I still have to get the controls down. I got the spidey turned 'round, but kept forgetting the sword thrust to hit the glowie thing on it's belly. :P Poor shield took a real beating.

I HAVE upgraded it to the next level though. Just haven't gone back into the game yet.

I don't believe that me saying a shield is needed to block blows is spoiling I just said that it is not really important to block something with it elsewhere in the game (at least as far as we are).
