His confidence has definitely grown over the last couple of years but he was considered the shy one of the group when they formed.

It all stemmed from boot camp at X-Factor, before the band had even formed, when he refused to dance, shying away from the camera, clearly embarrassed. Simon Cowell confronting him backstage about it was probably a major turning point for him. And I've always got the feeling with Zayn (although I must stress this is just my view on him) that he feels intellectually inadequate compared to some of the others, hence why he's not as talkative in interviews. Could be way off the mark there, but just a feeling I get having seen real life examples of it before.

Zayn has always been considered the shy one from anything I've read or heard generally. The first time this was evident was when he was too nervous to participate in the dancing stage during the X factor auditions and notoriously failed to show up the first time, only for Simon to persuade him otherwise. Although, he has grown a lot since then and seems much more confident which is nice to see. He also tends to describe himself as the 'shy one'.

I actually think he was too skinny back then, and there was even a rumor about an eating disorder. I'd much rather have him healthy and weighing slightly more.
