    Re: Downton Abbey

My biggest pet peeve about this show is that the most boring, god awful storylines take up like 90 % of the episodes.. Sybil and Branson are definitely the most interesting AND most popular couple on the show. They have the most fan made music vids on yt too.. lol. Sybil is such a great character, an empowered woman, which was very unusual back then, especially in the upper class. Also, Branson has such an interesting history too.

Anyway, back to my point.. Mary and Matthew bore me to tears, and they get 90 % of the screen time every episode, while Sybil and Matthew, who are both much more more interesting, either alone or together got a whole of 1 minute screen time last episode. It pisses me off. I also love O'Brien and Thomas, and what they get up to together, yes, they are kinda mean, but at least they make the show more exciting, they also only get a few svcenes each episode. And I also think Thomas needs a bf soon.

OK, sorry about that.. rant over now, lol. To sum it up: not enough Branson, Sybil, Thomas and O'Brien.. too much Mary and Matthew.

Well, I've just finished Season 2 and I have to say, it was rather anti-climactic.

Maggie Smith, still superb - lots of wonderful humour. Not sure what other projects Penelope Wilton had going on but could have done with more screen time for her.

Edith's character has developed well, though the story concerning the burn victim seemed to fizzle and went nowhere.

I know a few people have said they Sibyl/Branson arc was the most interesting - and it's true to an extent but Branson just got so insufferably self-righteous. Couldn't stand him towards the end.

I don't know - this season was quite hit and miss for me.

I haven't actually read any of this thread, as I'm worried there may be some spoilers buried within.. I'm on Season 2 - I do believe I've seen up to Episode 3. I've been busy so not had chance to catch-up, but it awaits my on my hard drive..

Think it's a fantastic programme - I was talking to my parents (who also enjoy it) a few days ago, and my grandpa would have been a small boy when during the period it's set around..

My Aunt has been inquiring into getting Downton Abbey [Seasons #01 and #02] on Blu-ray.

I looked at Amazon.com, but I wasn't sure if the wording about "Original U.K. Edition" meant there would be any prevention playing such Blu-ray discs on a U.S. Blu-ray player.

I haven't seen Downton Abbey at all. I don't usually get mixed up over these matters.

That's genius casting! I've also heard rumours that the shows producers want to get Roger Moore to play an ex admirer of Dame Maggie Smith's character's affections. That would be so amazing too!

I believe it has to do with how the episodes were originally broadcast. The British version originally aired as seven episodes, whereas when aired in the US, it was done in four episodes of 90 minutes.

    This article explains it.

    http://www.televisionaryblog.com/201...y-or-dont.html

Whatever changes there may or may not have been, I believe were minor at best.

As for region coding, I believe the US is region A whereas the UK is region B.

I've been avoiding this thread because I don't want to read spoilers. I am still waiting on my pre-order from Amazon, it is ridiculous. Why bother calling it a pre-order anyway when it serves no purpose, you don't get what you ordered on time seeing as how I have been waiting for a week and a half now. No more pre-orders for me, anyway I hope this next series is good, I enjoyed the last one and the story elements that it had set up.

Btw... I love me some Richard Armitage. If they ever made a gay porno with a man of his refined looks, his accent, his voice in a Victorian setting. That DVD would be worn out.

Does anyone else love Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham? I know she annoys many viewers, especially with the way she talks, but I just love her entire character. The family has such wonderful lives.
I don't get why Lady Sybil would want to give up the lap of luxury to slum it with some former chauffeur. A gorgeous girl like her could easily find a hot rich man. I don't understand how someone could complain about having a life that revolves around parties, beautiful clothing and sex (making heirs). But then again I work minimum wadge in the service sector, cleaning and waiting on spoiled people. I can only imagine having all my days as "weekends".

  37. #87

    Re: Downton Abbey

Also I always wonder how rich Cora's family must have been in order to support Downton. It's interesting that the US was one of the reasons many of these family's could no longer afford their manors, because of our cheap export of crops and meat.

Who you tellin. He was a huge hypocrite. He talks about how bad aristocrats are yet seeks a job at Downton then accept Lord Grantham's small dowry after corrupting his daughter. Pot meet kettle.

We finally watched the last episode we had recorded.

How will we survive until season 3?

When Shirley McClaine turns up as Elizabeth McGovern's mother. It should be hilarious watching her and Maggie Smith just gobble up the scenery when they appear together.

The Dowager is acting in the best interests of the house and the family.

Well. I'm hoping this is just a ruse for Dame Maggie Smith CBE to get a pay rise and hopefully get some better parts from now on.

I hope she'll be writing her memoirs so we can understand why her husband turned to the bottle

Seriously? You're teasing, right? Of course she's supposed to be 'funny.' It's the way she's written and exactly the way Maggie Smith plays her, as comic relief and as a showcase for all the things Julian Fellowes loves about Smith's screen persona. I think the "play her for laughs" got a little too "loose" in Series 2 but she's definitely a comic character.

I would love to read that story. I think Robert Stephens was a very under appreciated actor and we lost him far too soon.

Their son Toby is also a very good actor (and hot as hell, I think his physical features are the best bits of both his parents.)

So I watched the first episode today and it started off slow but it ramped up towards the end. The costumes and setting are nice but I feel the real draw of the show is definitely the drama.

I totally agree with you here. I think it's slow to mesmerize in the beginning because it takes awhile (at least it did for me, anyway) for the characters and their motivations to clarify.

I also couldn't warm up (at first) to Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary (which I thought would be deadly if I couldn't 'root' for her when I knew I was supposed to) but I soon "got her" as well and then I was completely hooked.

It DID take until episode 2 though to really start to enjoy it.
