Katy Perry Is Billboard's Woman of the Year

    From Billboard.com

Katy Perry will take home the Woman of the Year Award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event on Friday, Nov. 30, in New York City, capping off a year that's seen the pop star break chart records, release a 3D feature film and bring her candy-colored tour all over the world.

After launching into the mainstream with the saucy single "I Kissed a Girl" and hit album "One of the Boys," Perry set fire to the charts with 2010's "Teenage Dream." The record-setting album notched five Hot 100 No. 1s, a first for an album by a female artist, and has sold 2.5 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Dream" spent over 100 weeks in the Billboard 200.

"Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career," Bill Werde, Billboard's editorial director, says. "We are thrilled to celebrate these incredible achievements and her amazing past 12 months by honoring her with the Billboard Woman of the Year Award. With what seems like a never-ending supply of record-breaking, chart-topping hits, coupled with her unique and fresh style, Katy Perry is hands-down one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry today."

Billboard's annual Women in Music Event, now in its seventh year, celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, coinciding with the publication of Billboard's Women in Music Power Players list. This year's event will be taking place on Friday, Nov. 30 at Capitale in New York City. Previous honorees include Taylor Swift, Fergie and Beyoncé.

Thought I'd share this. Kelly Clarkson covered Katy's Wide Awake

Don't get me wrong I love Katy but Kelly's live version of this song is 10x better than any performance Katy has done of this song.

No, but I imagine they will eventually.

The single leaked, and it's vapid as fuck. It's just sounds like Avril Lavigne singing a Sara Bareilles song co-written by The Lumineers. Nothing interesting about it.

Yeah... I'm not feeling this one all that much either. It feels like a throwaway single for a movie soundtrack or a sports theme song. She should have saved "Wide Awake" as the lead single for Prism instead. But it'll be a hit and I'm sure I'll grow to like it.

Is "Brave" credited as the music sample for "Roar"? If not...

Katy Perry has a new song out

I was kind of hoping the lead single from her next album would be more like I Kissed a Girl. This sounds very Kelly Clarkson Stronger meets Katy Perry's Firework in a slower tempo to me, and the lyrics are really cheesy.

I'm guessing it will probably do well but overall it wasn't what I was expecting. I guess once its played to death on radio it will slightly grow on me.

Seems like a nice sing along song.

I still think Katy's best song is I Kissed a Girl.

ya, I agree. this is not a great song to "wow" us again. too slow for a first single. I think something more upbeat would be a better choice to capture our attention.. this song kinda fails.. its forgettable. Hoping Gaga's first single isn't this slow.

    Now for the VMAs push!!!!!!!!!!

Katy Perry's Roar, the first single from her upcoming Prism album, sold 557,000 downloads its first week, topping the digital song chart and scoring the highest sales week of the year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The tally exceeds expectations and stands as the sixth-largest sales week ever. The only heftier totals, according to Billboard, were Flo Rida's Right Round with 636,000 in 2009, Ke$ha's TiK ToK with 610,000 in 2009, Bruno Mars' Grenade with 559,000 in 2010, and Taylor Swift's We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together with 623,000 in 2012 and I Knew You Were Trouble with 582,000 in 2012.

Roar also marks the best digital song sales we

    From Billboard..com:

With the eye of the tiger, Katy Perry is the BillboardHot 100's new champion, as "Roar" rises 2-1. The song – which becomes Perry's eighth Hot 100 No. 1 –stops the 12-week command of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (featuring T.I. and Pharrell). Meanwhile, Eminem blasts onto the chart at No. 3 with "Berzerk" and Lorde enters the top 10 withher debut alternative/pophit "Royals."

As always, let's look deeper at the numbers.

Registering a 17% gain inoverall Hot 100 chart points, "Roar" leads Digital Songs for a third week, selling 448,000 downloads for the week ending Sept. 1 (up 14%)

I applaud Katy Perry for continuing to be a chart beast on both iTunes & radio effortlessly, but she is boring me this time around. "Roar" hasn't grown on me like I thought it would, and "Dark Horse" bored me after just 5 listens. I hate the context she's using the term dark horse which makes no sense for one, Juicy J's rap verse makes even less sense, and the song just abruptly ends right when it feels like it's starting to build towards something epic. (I heard "Teenage Dream" on the radio the other day and still makes me bop.)

Well the album leaked and... it's a bit underwhelming for me. She worked with mainly Dr. Luke/Max Martin on this one again yet it feels disjointed. The more uptempo stuff during the first half of the album isn't all that memorable as it intends to be -- I mean WTF is an "International Smile"? -- and the 2nd half just sort of blends into one long, seemingly never-ending song. But Katy Perry is gonna rule the 4th quarter with Prism, no doubt, but she didn't top TD with this one at all. :/

Re: The Official Katy Perry Discussion Thread!

Once again Taylor proves why she is the Queen of Pop Music...she knows how to properly release an album.

Rarely can an album sell almost 300,000 copies in its opening week and be considered a disappointment.

This is one of those unusual circumstances.

Based on opening day sales data, Hits Daily Double reports that Katy Perry’s heavily hyped, long awaited and aggressively marketed “Prism” is pacing to debut in the 270-290K ballpark.

If the figure holds, it would not only land well below expectations but represent growth of less than 100K over predecessor “Teenage Dream,” which moved 192K debut units in the summer of 2010.

That album–and its deluxe re-release–produced a record-setting six number one singles and two more top three singles. A ubiquitous album that established Katy Perry as the reigning queen of pop, “Teenage Dream” ended up selling more than 2.7M copies to prove the singer-songwriter was not simply the woman behind the latest interchangeable voice on the radio. She was a uniquely recognizable, ardently supported pop star. She was someone who, moving forward, should have the ability to sell serious quantities of albums.

I'm really surprised, sales shouldn't be everything and all that, but coming off a huge era that was "Teenage Dream" those numbers are really lackluster. "Prism" really does cement her status as a single's artist. The only songs I've kept on my iPod: "Birthday," "Love Me," "Ghost," & "Choose Your Battles." I'm sure I'll have a few others after she's done milking this one, "Dark Horse" is starting to grow on me now.

Beyoncé with a flop lead single managed 310k. This is a flop for Katy tbh. Why? Cuz you can be sure ARTPOP will sell at LEAST twice that and that's without a 3plat #1 lead single and seed paper. Oops! lol

One of the mistakes Katy did was streaming her whole album a week early. Look at Queen Taylor she was like fuck spotify, you want to listen to my songs then go buy my album. The result: The ONLY female(artist?) to have straight back to back million plus opening week albums

Why are artist today not doing promo the week of the release???

    From mtv.com:

Need another reason to tune into the Grammy Awards on January 26? Well, KatyCats, take note: Grammy-nominated Katy Perry has just been added to the show's lineup as a performer.
—The GRAMMYs (@TheGRAMMYs) January 7, 2014It hasn't been confirmed which song she'll perform at the show. She's already released two singles off her October 2013 album release, Prism, including the Grammy-nominated "Roar" (which she performed at the VMAs) as well as "Unconditionally" (which she did at the EMA). So, she just might surprise fans. She recently confirmed that her Juicy J collaboration "Dark Horse" is the next single off the chart-topping release.
