I don't think 'Search This Thread' is working correctly

I don't think 'Search This Thread' is working correctly – at least in the 'Fun & Games' thread 'Think of a word that sounds obscene.'

I just posted 'Come out' as an entry, even though I was mildly incredulous when a preliminary 'Search This Thread' assured me there were 'no matches.'

I didn't stop there, though, but also checked 'Come again,' which I had posted this morning, and got the same response. Furthermore, a check of 'Search This Thread' for 'Come out' after I had posted it, again told me there were 'no matches.'

    What's up?

I just searched the thread for "elder" - and your post came up. so it works in general. it might take a while until a new word is in the search index though.

I don't think you can search for words 3 letters or less...

Re: I don't think 'Search This Thread' is working correctly

FYI: I just checked again, and neither one of my two posts from yesterday with the word 'come' in them registered as 'matches.' (That includes 'come again,' which clearly has more than three letters in both words.)

Nor did jackmanor's entry at the top of the current last page of the game, 'come forth,' elict a 'match.' Nor for that matter did the single word, 'come,' which has been used repeatedly since the game began.

Unfixable, or is your advice simply not to rely on the 'Search this Thread' tool for guidance?

Re: I don't think 'Search This Thread' is working correctly

In addition to words with fewer than 4 letters, it probably doesn't search extremely common words. I tried "from" on another page and it found none. I used my "search on this page" in my browser (in the Edit menu) and found several.

The four letter requirement is not just on JUB and it's annoying. I spend time on a forum for writers and I couldn't search for "POV". No one writes out "point of view" (which I couldn't search anyway because of the "of"). So, I had to post a new question that was probably already discussed dozens of times.

^ Thnx for yr input, EJM!

But certain, common conjunctions are 'operators' in computer languages (as 'from' might be in some, I suppose). 'Come,' so far as I know, is not one of those.

neither from, nor come is an operator. furthermore any software that would interpret operators from user input would be very bad.

however, it is only sensible that common and too short words are excluded - this is not a search engine, it's a web forum. remaining a search index for a site as big as jub and include all that stuff would slow down the site massively.

The way I understand it, the forum software has settings for which words get treated as "common" (like the minimum letters is set). When words are used often enough, they are marked by the system as too common to be searched. (Or, maybe they could be pre-set?) Like Corny says, it can't/shouldn't handle indexing all words.
