Questions on the amount of 'views' a thread gets

Just out of curiosity - is the view count number the total amount of clicks on the thread title, or is it the total amount of JUBbers that viewed the thread?

e.g. does 600 views mean 600 JUBbers viewed the thread however many times, or does it mean 400 JUBbers, half of whom viewed the thread twice?

Also, how can a thread have 3 or 4 replies, but 0 views?

Finally, does JUB keep a record of exactly which JUBbers viewed each thread? It would be interesting if that info could be displayed by a pop-up link, in exactly the same way as the repliers list can.

    Thanks in advance for replies.

I would be really upset if all of JUB could see what threads I was clicking on. It is already bad enough that JUB supporters can see where I am if they decide to track me down. I don't need people seeing everything I do. So the idea of listing the people who click on a thread is kinda creepy to me.

    Just my two cents.

Otherwise, I believe that the threads are counted by clicks each time, so even if you yourself click on your own thread 5 times, those 5 clicks get registered. I think, but I could be totally wrong.

The view count is updated once every hour or so. It is possible that replies came in quicker than the server updated the thread stats. So that's why a 0 views and 3 or 4 replies would happen.

I keep an eye on thread counts because that's how I know if my stories are doing well in that section. So I've kinda kept up with how that works a bit.

^ are you a bit paranoid ? How is someone supposed to "track you down" if he can just see which thread you read last ?

Anyway, thread views is exactly what the name implies - the number of thread views. Whether its 300x the same person, or 300 single views from different persons

However, this number is not always a 100% accurate as it is only updated every few minutes.

I get that the Internet is not some safe haven and eventually all your activity is wide open, but seriously. Who cares what posters read what thread? If a JUBber reads a thread and decides not to post in it or get involved, isn't that their choice? Why does everyone need to know? Not really paranoia but it would change the way I view JUB every day. There's a reason lurkers lurk.

Re: Questions on the amount of 'views' a thread gets

I've been here for much too long perhaps, lol, but over the years, there are some posters who I love for their wit, sarcasm, knowledge, joviality, and also their take on life. Occasionally, too, old threads get bumped and or new threads attract a lot of activity. It is sometimes convenient just to see who participated in those threads by clicking the number of replies, and getting a list of the thread's participants and seeing what their contributions were, rather than having to read through the whole thread.

WRT to views, often this helps thread starters realise that their thread has been looked at, even though there has been little post input by other folks. As someone who has started threads which only have a few postings, it's nice to know that maybe more than the few posters have read it.

Chickenguy, one of the little known functions on JUB is who is currently on-line and what they're viewing/doing. Here's the link.

    Who's Online.

As for actual lists of all the threads you've read, there isn't such a function. The only close one is all the threads you've posted in recently, and this is accessed by clicking at the person's username and then clicking on the link "Find more posts by USERNAME". Alternatively, clicking and viewing their profile, you can search for their posting activity either as post or as threads.

To reassure haunted, unless you have real reason to fear someone from real life tracking you down here on JUB, most activity on JUB other than that mentioned above is innocuous. You can still browse JUB without having to login and so your browsing activity will not be linked to your JUB username. You won't be able to post though, nor search for member's activities, IIRC.

If your computer is shared, consider using your browser in Private mode.

Chickenguy is asking for a pop-up list of every person that clicks on a thread whether they comment in it or not. My only worry is that people might have made a conscious decision on NOT participating in a certain thread for a reason and they may not WANT anyone knowing they even clicked on it.

As for my own safety, I'm not that worried. I would just be very annoyed knowing any JUBber could verify what thread I looked at - why do they need to know? I'm not really hiding anything or paranoid. I'd be happy to list all the threads I looked at today for you right here. I'm just saying in general that would make a person think twice about clicking on a topic.

Again, lurkers lurk for a reason. Yanking them into the forefront because you are curious as to who was reading the thread is kinda mean. If I want people to know I'm in there I'll shout it out in the thread.

I just want to clarify that only registered users, that is, those who have a username will be found on the Who's Online above. If you haven't logged in, then you won't be found there. There is no yanking to the forefront if you haven't logged in.

For JUB supporter members, they have the option of the invisible mode, just check the box, save the changes, and you're done.

As Corny mentions, those view numbers also includes lurkers or anyone who hasn't logged in and are viewing the thread.

Besides, underneath your username in the bottom left hand corner you'll see your on-line status or off-line status so if you're logged in during your browsing/lurking, folks will still know you're around. There is a slight delay after logging out that the status is updated, so sometimes one can just miss someone. If you're reading something long and you've not clicked on any links, it seems one can also be timed out as being offline after some time, possibly as little as 20 minutes.

I would think the easiest way to keep fellow Jubers from tracking your posts is to change your "profile settings".....I believe there's a feature where you can hide the feature on your profile that directs Jubers to your Current/Past Threads and Posts....

I'm surprised that wasnt mentioned in this thread considering Moderators choose to HIDE their Threads/Posts-Activity feature on their profile...

If you click on any username, moderators included, you will find the "Find more posts by USERNAME" where all the posts that particular JUBber are shown that are in the forums that all the jubbites write in.

I don't think any of the moderators do "considering Moderators choose to HIDE their Threads/Posts-Activity feature on their profile... " as you suggest, unless it is the on-line and offline thing you're on about.

Wai....Ok, I see what you're saying...So what's the point in having the Settings option to hide the "My Activity" Profile feature if someone can simply click on your user name to find your posts?

A Juber might as well keep the "My Activity" feature viewable in their profile...Hiding it is not going to keep another member from viewing their activity...

Your activity shows what you did last. Only mods and Supporters can see this.
Your posts show what you posted, and that's public anyway.

The technical way the site runs is due to the way it was set up. The people who run and maintain the site initially and then passed it onto the new owners are the ones to ask. Whether they'll give you an answer or not, I don't know.

I neither hide my activity or my online status (I've never been in 'invisible' mode). Some of the other Mods may do this however - I've never checked..

But as has been said, posts aren't private - unless they're in the Supporter's forum or Mod Towers.
