Any anime fans? I need recommendations

Hey guys.. I've always sorta been into anime as I watched DBZ as a kid and a few others.

However, last year or two I've gotten into it much more.. especially the last few months.
I prefer anime action or sci-fi, but ones that aren't too repetitive or spend waaayyy too much time talking needlessly. Also, I love a good storyline, character development. I'm not a huge fan of childish humor although comedy has its places.
I've sort of run out of what to watch though. Only looking for really good quality. Here's what I've seen so far.

Fullmetal Alchemist - just finished entire series. Loved the later episodes and as a whole I thought it was done very well.
Bleach - have seen most of the English dubbed episodes. Meh.. first few arcs were good then it got really boring.
Blood+ - loved it although it was really sappy and corny at parts
Claymore - absolutely loved it although the end was a bit unsatisfying
Darker than Black - absolutely loved it. Very dark, funny at times, touching
Ghost in the Shell (movie) - loved it as well.

Hmm.. i've probably seen more but that's all I can think of. And saw pretty much all of DBZ as a kid. Loved

^ Yes, definitely, most of the Studio Ghibli stuff is phenomenal.

My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies are two of the most memorable animes I have ever seen. They are great films in their own right, regardless of genre. To help you decide if it's for you, see trailers:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbEyjUsWKZA&feature=related[/ame]

I also recommend Rurouni Kenshin and X/1999 (I believe X/1999 is produced by the same company that did Ghost in the Shell).

I personally dislike Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Studio Ghibli in general XD

Some Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is awesome, if you haven't seen that yet. Other good ones are Death Note and Code Geass.

    Stay fate Night
    Scryed
    Zoids
Twelve Kingdoms (some might find it boring but I liked it)
    Read or Die
    Ninja Scroll

Tenchi is a classic fantasy/space/scifi/comedy all rolled into one package
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin Epic 80's anime about dogs fighting for their homeland against evil bears
Outlaw Star is an awesome space/scifi show
FLCL "Fooly Cooly" is weird scifi/comedy but awesome
Slayers fantasy/comedy - if you haven't seen it yet, there's a few series and a few movies out.
Sol Bianca (the 80's ones) -Scifi futuristic movie with an all female cast
Vandread -Similar to the above except the main hero is a guy and is pretty much harassed by all of the women.
Project A-ko Comedy/Scifi/Action series, see the original 1985 movie first then the 3 sequels, I haven't seen the Vs. Battles (Blue Side/Gray Side) yet but they seem ok.

Re: Any anime fans? I need recommendations

I love Cowboy Bebop. It is my favorite anime of all time. It has so much beautiful jazz/blues songs composed by Yoko Kanno.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnbKF_uosrA[/ame]

Tenchi Muyo! is a real good series. Comedy, action, and so much other fun stuff.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzmNRv7yVfk[/ame]

Death Note is a very smart, beautiful series. Very intelligently written.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhzikdFMv7Y[/ame]

Paranoia agent- Directed by Satoshi Kon. Love this series. Interesting, freaky, mystery.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uYmKfteXig[/ame]

    Satoshi Kon also directed:

Perfect Blue - A masterpiece of a psychological thriller.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0Rj7nn0ZVs[/ame]

Tokyo Godfathers- The story of three homeless people who find an abandoned new born baby girl (still alive) that they find while rummaging through trash for food. Their stories are so interesting and complex.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q6mcx2qF4Q[/ame]

Paprika - Um, ... fun, fanastic, wild.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJzEW_eE1G0[/ame]

I cant think of any other directed by Satoshi Kon at this moment.

Also, Outlaw star - Fun, funny, sci-fi anime.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCccmIFG1ms[/ame]

Gungrave- Another favorite. A story of trust and betrayal. Follows the story of two best friends as they make their way up from to the top of the criminal underworld and their trials and tribulations to get there. Beautiful anime. Great story.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG1wLnthiC8[/ame]

FLCL- hit or miss. Definetly not my favorite, but it has interesting characters and amazing animation. The story never really makes sense (at all). I am listing this series as less of a recommendation and more of a warning. Some people absolutely love it and think of it as a masterpiece; others think of it as a headache. I tend to agree with the latter.

    ^Both of those movies suck.

If you haven't seen the Evangelion series, it's considered anime fan blasphemy. You don't want to be a blasphemer and not see it right?

I'd definitely start with the classics. No one should live a life without watching Akira at least 27 times.

Tekkon Kinkreet was dope, and Samurai Champloo is definitely word.

    Cowboy Bebop is the shit.

Someone previously mentioned Grave of the Fireflies. It's really good, but it's depressing as HELL. By the time the movie's halfway over you'll be slitting your wrists. By the way when I mentioned the Evangelion series I meant the television series and NOT the movies. THe movies are excellent but if you even try to watch them without seeing the television series first you won't understand a damn thing that's going on.

I said the same thing to a friend of mine and he was all cocky and said "fuck that I'll figure out what the movie's about and just watch it." WHen the movie was over he looked at me and said "You were right. I have no clue what the fuck just happened."

I also really liked Elfen Lied. You should watch that shit. It's super cutesy style in the way that it's illustrated, but the content is violent as fuck (read: it fucks your mom, that's how cool it is.)

Serial Experiments Lain kicked so much ass it was ridiculous. Although the OP said he didn't want something with a ton of dialogue which is what 99% of Lain is. Wow, this is the most nerdcore thread on JUB and I'm completely dorking out over it.

    Thanks, that is me

Tenchi Muyo I watched some as a kid. I think it's too jokey and corny at times for me. That traditional anime humor gets annoying after a while.

    I will try Death Note

Paranoia agent looks too creepy haha. Perfect Blue looks good but too serious for my taste right now.

Looking into the rest of the suggestions now

Re: Any anime fans? I need recommendations

Personally I'm a bigger Manga person then I am into anime but I started off on anime so I know a # of good ones.

    Awesome Animes:
Full Metal Alchemist: You listed this one. But there are two different anime's out. 1 is its own storyline completely while the other follows the manga's storyline (manga version is called "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood")

How to tell the difference: In the manga version their teacher never had a son. In the original anime FMA story Ed and Al's teacher has a son.
Just so we are clear: the Manga came before the FMA anime, but the FMA anime finished before the Manga did. Point in fact the entire storylines are different from when Scar kills the man's daughter in the beginning of the series.

You should totally watch both series because both are absolutely amazing. I'd give the manga versions storyline a 10 (it is in fact my favorite manga) and the anime version an 8.5.

    Other awesome anime:
~Anything by Miyazaki. Wikipedia his name and watch all animes he's had anything to do with (cept maybe pocco rosso. But thats me personally).
    ~Death Note
    ~One Piece
~If you like One Piece i suggest Fairy Tale
    ~Cowboy Bebop is a must
    ~Samurai Champloo
~Fooly Cooly <- only 6 episodes long. half hour each. Short and compact full of awesome.
    ~Outlaw star is a blast
~Peprika <-trippy mind fuck but really fun
    ~Ruroni Kenshin

edit- If you liked DBZ then you should watch "Dragon Ball". Its when Goku was a kid. It's not as focused on action stuff and "Powering up" like DBZ was. Point in fact the original Dragon Ball Manga was supposed to be a pervy, silly manga. Hence Master Roshi and pretty much everyone else being total perverts.

Just for the sake of your soul...***do not watch Dragon Ball GT***. Its worse then the dumbest storylines of DBZ...

I'll post more when I inevitably think of them

    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    Outlaw Star
    Trigun
    Evangelion series
    Moribito

Reborn is a really fun show that adds tons of humor in addition to its awesome action scenes (although I still believe the manga was better) :P

Re: Any anime fans? I need recommendations

I'd really suggest watching subbed stuff rather than dubbed, it gives you *way* more options as a number of good anime's having been officially dubbed and a # of the ones that have, have been done poorly.

Case in point: One Piece. If your gonna watch it dubbed I suggest you don't watch it at all =x

But pretty much each anime on the list u just gave has good dubs

No interest in One Piece, but yea.. I know there are some terrible dubs out there and in that case I might use a subbed version.
But I find that watching subbed versions make me focus too much on the words and not enough on the animation or action. And it's kind of annoying if I want to lay down and watch it.

Ergo Proxy does have a dubbed version. I never watch the dubbed versions of anything though because the acting always makes me cringe. That and the translation is usually really screwy. I can't remember what movie it was, but I watched one maybe 10 years ago dubbed. I then saw the subtitled version and it was literally almost a completely different movie because of how badly they translated the dubbed version. I decided to stick with subbed movies after that experience.

By the way, I know this sounds ridiculous but try not to judge Evangelion by the first half of the series alone. I mean don't get me wrong I think the first half is decent, but believe me by the time you're more than halfway through it you'll just be amazed at everything. It's really the perfect anime. It has a blend of high action, philosophy, and really bad/awesome comedy.

Finished Death Note today. Very happy with it. Was very intriguing and captivating. The annoying over the top humor you see in many anime wasn't there and it was a very smart, well-dubbed, well-written, well-drawn series.

I'm wondering what next now. Maybe cowboy bebop? Was thinking something more recent though but of very high quality. Maybe Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

I wish I could find something like Darker than Black though. Very serious drama, with a touch of humor and some great action. And also powers.. it was like a mix of Bond and X-men and I'm a super huge X-men fan.

^ I always see Darker Than Black being compared to...

    Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

...and I think Speed Grapher is kind of similar in some ways:

Personally, I just finished watching Baccano! and I can see why people hype it up so much. It's an amazing anime but the way the narrative is set up is confusing as hell at first and I almost gave up on it after the first episode. It's challenging but totally worth viewing. It is now in my top favs.

It's so bizarre/unique that I don't even know what genre to put it in. At first glance it seems like a action packed historical crime/mafia drama but it's so much more.

Everyone keeps mentioning truly awesome films and tv series.

    Might i also suggest

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
    Last Exile
    and Wolf's Rain

Although you can't go wrong with what everyone else has suggested, especially Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis.

Tons of great recommendations in here.

Braex recommended X/1999, which is one of my all-time favorite movies and there is also a TV series simply called X that can be found also that re-tells the story in the movie with a much more detail and style. I recommend picking up Tokyo Babylon prior to watching the X series however, as it gives some fairly important background to a couple of the characters.

Another personal favorite of mine is Fushigi Yuugi. It's a trifle silly at times and I tend to go for more serious anime but I just love it. The OVAs are good too and have hilarious omake chapters.

Bleach, which I read and watch habitually, is definitely a up and down series. Usually when you hit periods in the anime where you lose interest, it generally means you're watching filler. Bleach has A LOT of filler and most of it isn't very good imo.

I just started 07-Ghost and so far I'm enjoying it through 5 episodes.

These are ones that I have seen and liked:
YuYu Hakusho, Tenchi Muyo, Case Closed (though I haven't seen that many episodes), Outlaw Star, Rurouni Kenshin

Also, if you haven't seen the Dragonball series, it's at least as good as DBZ and 10x better than GT, imo.

I got Appleseed and Appleseed Ex Machina, but still unopened, don't have time, unfortunately... Wanted to get Naruto Shippenden but there are hundreds of episodes, and well, time and cost...

I loved Cowboy Bebop, and more so because of the music.
