Re: A song of ice and fire: HBO's Game of Thrones

Sorry for bumping this thread but I have a question for those who have read the series. I just got into A Storm of Swords and I'm infuriated. Hypothetically speaking, if Lady Catelyn wanted to win the war for Cersei's cunt, why didn't she just castrate Jamie and make him a eunuch and then release him? I severely doubt Cersei would still love him without a cock.

But she loves him as a brother, not just a piece of meat!

(And by the way, as I slowly make my way through ADwD, I'm delighted to report that it's WAAYYYY better than the last book.)

I just remember from a Clash of Kings that Cersci has a huge case of penis envy and how she described the uselessness of Varys as a male for being a eunuch which lead me to the conclusion for castration of Jamie. I will say, a storm of swords seems much better than a Clash of Kings which droned on for about 700 pages until it got good.

If you thought ACoK was bad, wait til you get to AFfC.

I enjoyed A Clash of Kings as great fun.

AFfC has dragged on a little (I'm smack in the middle of the book atm) but believe me. the Jamie/Cercei dynamic just gets better and better

OMFG I am reading a feast for crows atm (about 270pgs in) and this book is even worse than a clash of kings. I just DO NOT care for the iron isles subplot at all. I don't care if its a silly arc that leads to some petty quarrel/war at the end of the book. It is just not needed and the chapters with it make me want to stop reading the book then.

Agreed. The series is great but I feel like GRRM has progressively lost control of his story with each new book. A Game of Thrones is practically flawless, but the main plotlines falter in the following books, often lacking direction and clearly showing it in the painfully slow pace and "filler" chapters.

Also like you said, the addition of (or at least, overdevelopment of) new, boring, relatively unimportant subplots like the Iron Isles bogs down the series quite a bit, I think.

TBH I found A Storm of Swords to be the best book thus far. I thought A Clash of Kings was bad but A Feast for Crows is far worse. I haven't touched A Dance with Dragons yet but I hear it's just marginally better than AFFC.

The whole Stark vs Lannister vs Baratheon (and other relatives) plot is enough as is. The Iron Isles and Dornish subplots are fine as a minute but as an actual plotline, it's dreadful. I only tolerate the Danny subplot because dragons are awesome and it actually makes the readers feel like all this petty quarreling in Westeros is for naught when the big bad dragons show up to kill everyone. The Black/Wall subplot is decent like the Danny plot to emphasize the "ivory tower" that is King's Landing.

The problem I fear for A Clash of Kings series is that there is a lot of sabre rattling for most of the book which is quite boring to both read and watch. I wouldn't be surprised if some plot elements are shuffled around to make it more interesting.

Since you're bi, this was also a pic of Emilia Clarke from the pajiba article...

Reckon you have seen her titties already if you have watched the series.

We also have the "virginal" Margeary Tyrell played by Natalie Dormer

I notice the role reversal in hair color. She plays a brunet while Emilia plays a platinum blonde.

The Iron Isles and the Dorne plot lines are entirely superfluous, but the wall and the Dany plot lines I suspect are integral to how the whole thing plays out.

I.E. the others/white walkers overrun all the petty squabbling and Dany and her dragons swoop in to save everyone's bacon. Or at least the bacon of whoever's left alive.

Reading A Dance With Dragons, all the subplots do start to fit into the bigger storyline and reveal where GRRM is trying to go with his story.

I used to agree that the books seemed to loose their way and make so little since once you got to AFfC, but in the most current book, it all starts to make sense and finally come together.

    IMO at least

I finished ADwD so I know all about the ending of that book so that comment is a bit of a spoiler. As much as I love Dany as a character, I hated her ending in the book.

Now that I see sexy Iain in Downton Abbey, I love him scruffy. I usually don't like much older men but he makes tingly.

Not really. Have you seen how many teasers/trailers that HBO has released already?

yeah, from a teaser i expect to see some elements of the new story line. that's why i don't watch the true blood teasers.

from a recap i expect .. well a recap. and no spoilers. not that they could spoil anything for me in this case, but probably for others.

There are several clips up on youtube from the first 2 episodes (about 10 mins in each one) I won't post them but OMG I can't wait...

Spoiler: (Highlight this box to see the hidden message.)
Until Tyrion loses his nose and gets knocked down several pegs into disarray to piss off the media's infatuation with him. Always we we got a few more deaths to toil with first.

Also I loved this little vid between 4 of the castmates. Emilia's bubbly personality is so infectious. I seriously hope her career takes off from here and only gets better.

The only negative I had about last nite was how they didn't explain well why Dany was in the middle of the Red Waste. As a reader, I know why. When Osha and Bran were talking about the comet there was no mention outside "lol dragons". Dany was actually following the comet in the book so it was a bit amusing to see them going the opposite way of it.

They are still doing a damn good job with this show and I didn't want the new episode to end! I read all the books except the last one so it's so cool to see the characters I read about come to life.

I loved how Cersei let Littlefinger know that she is the one with the power and threatened his life lol. I think they should have shown Dany a little more and maybe let her bloodriders come back before the episode was up. Other than that it was great and I can't wait to see more.

Dany's storyline is weird because she spends half the book wondering the desert and she doesn't get to Qarth until 2/3's in. I'm sure next episode will be Renley heavy as it was foretold that Catelyn is heading to his camp for an alliance which is actually about a third into the book. So the story is gonna be quite jumbled up and not follow the book quite so well chronologically but I'm sure they will still hit all the key points.

That was so out of character for little finger .. it threw me a bit off. But I assume it was done to show how unstable and clueless Cersei is.

It was out of character for Littlefinger do something like that but IMO, Cersei responded the way she did to show she still has some power after getting told off by Tyrion and later by Joffrey. TBH, it seems far more likely that Cersei called "the hits" out on Robert's bastards and not Joffrey. She is in full-blown damage control atm and killing the bastards was a way to show said power.

Speaking of leaked episodes, apparently some Aussies got slapped with copyright infringement suits because they tweeted about watching the premier episode despite the fact that it doesn't air there until mid-April. Guess the idiom still holds true: "stupidity is hardly rewarded".

ahhhhh welcome back, jaime, jorah, & grenn. and i think gendry is joining my list ^^

oh yeah, and there is also a story. first ep mostly fulfilled my very high expectations.

quibble: robs cgi wolf didnt look so hot. they did a nice job with danis dragon, though. i wonder how much of an issue the cgi will be in the future. i also worry a bit that the sheer quantity of plot and characters will smother the atmosphere too much. but my negativity stops right here; i was mostly very happy to be back in westeros.

loved the scene with cersei and littlefinger. the political intrigue aspects of the book translate the best to the screen, because they dont cost so much, and the cast is simply amazing.

back to what really matters: heres some lovely bondage, kids!

I thought they did an excellent job with the wolf! Certainly looked better than the wolves in the movie The Day After Tomorrow.

that wolf was not a CGI. that was a real wolf, composed into the scene. sadly greenscreen still is kinda difficult with fur, so it looked a bit "pasted" in. but hopefully we will see more of this.

iirc it was implied in the books that she let them get killed. but we didn't get a "first person view" of it.

I keep hoping daenerys will get more and more bad ass...

So far it looks that it will be happening.

    I never read the book....

minor spoilers ahead... ive seen ep 2 and have read up to book 4.

wonderful 2nd episode, with overall stronger individual scenes.

arya and gendry are adorable together. i think they could have done more with this pairing in the books. their scenes together here are great, though.

loved the scenes with tyrion and janos slynt, and tyrion and cersei. its hard to care much about roz, but littlefinger is chillingly evil. those kings-landing bitches know how to read like the best on rupauls drag race!

i love how they realized the castle on pyke. its probably my favourite castle yet. im not fond of the iron islands subplot, but i like asha, and it looks like the actress is well cast. but did they give her a new name? why? i wish they had spent some more time on her... i understand why they didnt, but her introduction in the book is one of my favourite scenes.

north of the wall, john is... oh, hey there, grenn. hello. hows it goin' ... what, wait, this didnt happen in the book! exciting!

    melissandre is pretty bad ass!

the producers still dont have their raging heterosexuality under control, appearantly. seriously, this was the one single problem with season one, and its disappointing that its still here. im all for nudity, but please dont be so fucking gratutious about it, and keep it equal opportunity.

and we havent even checked in on half the cast. not that i mind... i didnt miss anybody, even though at this point in the story, catlyne is one of my favourite characters. cant wait for loras, margaery, and lady olena to show up. did they already announce who the latter will be played by? if its maggy smith, ill die. oh, and brienne. exciting!

    It's beyond obnoxious.

I'm actually close to just quitting the show because of it. I can't stand fanservice like that, it's pathetic and alienating. I guess they are desperate to lure in the non-nerdy straight male demographic or something. I just don't know.

S2 is kind of confusing at the moment, reminds me of why I couldn't get into the books. It's just a bit to convoluted for me. Jon Snow & his storyline at this point is what I do like about S2 so far. Partly for shallow reasons, yes.

A word hylas; keep in mind that episode 2 hasn't aired yet (despite being leaked online) so talking about it is a no-no. HBO has been going after people downloading their shit aggressively, most notably in Australia where the second season hasn't even begun to air yet.

edit: Reckon the Dutch did get it a week early which I guess is a whoopsie on someone at Dutch HBO. But yeah, spoiler tags next time.

Am I a total nerd for looping the Game of Thrones opening on youtube and saving it in my Iphone?

Loving the show and richness of the characters. I think my favourite character is Jon Snow. There's such depth to him.

It's gratuitous that's for sure. But it doesn't bother me in the least. I guess I'm pervy like that. (And I would never, ever refer to it as "raging heterosexuality." Oy.

I'm chalking it up to damned if you do and damned if you don't. (I just thank the makers that they're so goddamned damned.)
