You're right. This isn't your typical series where you can just pick up anywhere. This is very involved with many characters and stories.
I think what I'll do is just start from the beginning and forget what I've watched so far.
It's an amazing show.
I actually think that Khaleesi Daenerys is probably my fav chracter in that show.

If you don't mind reading, read the series. I just finished "A Feast for Crows" in time for the release of "A Dance with Dragons" on July 12th.
The books are not disappointing, well, only in that what happens in the show with Renly and Loras does not take place in the book.

Are they the gay lovers? The knight and king Robert's brother?
Oh ya, I found them.
Why was that added? Any idea?
And can Jon Snow please be gay?

Oh, I missed where you started mid-season. Sorry Elvin! I thought what happens between them happens later on in the show.
I believe it was added to appeal to the gay audience, though, truthfully.
Can't say about Jon, you'll have to wait for season 2 or read the books. :P I've had my eye on Jon since they cast him for the show. I pictured him a bit differently in the books but I love who they cast. What a man.

Loras Tyrell (Knight of Flowers) and Renly were gay lovers in the books. At one point Cerseri says of Renly who she suspects of actually deflowering his bride (Loras' sister btw) something like, a man may prefer wine but that doesn't mean he won't drink beer if you set it down in front of him.
The references to Loras and Renly are all like that but there is no doubt that the author intended for them to be gay lovers.

Well they are definitely coming back, but it's not possible to say how exactly, the series isn't finished.
There's a whole lot of buildup on several fronts and plot lines that haven't been resolved, but seem to point to a series of epic confrontations that I think are going to end up with Dany the only one left standing on a heap of steaming corpses.
I'd love to see series Jon nekkid too, but book John is like 16 and that would be kinda pervy.

I hate the way that Cat treated Jon Snow. It's the one sour note to an otherwise likable character. I don't think that it's the fact that he's Ned's bastard, though that obviously must rankle her; I think it's because Ned acknowledged him. He poses a constant threat to the birthright of her and Ned's legitimate children--a point she raises when talk of legitimizing Jon begins (I hope that isn't a terrible spoiler for anyone).
As for Renly and Loras, I love the fact that the series made their relationship visible. The books always deals with it in terms of rumor and allusion. I just wonder if we'll get to see a little more gay love with some of the other gay/bi characters.
On an unrelated note. I want to make one little criticism about the season finale. In the books there was this fantastic/tragic dream scene in which Dany witnessed her baby dying within her. I would have liked to see that played out on screen. I think it would have added some more gravity to her loss.

I just wanted to put a thought out there: concerning Jon Snow, is it crazy of me to think that he isn't Ned's son at all? Nothing is ever mentioned in the books, but there is a certain tone to a number of the conversations that lead me to think that maybe, just maybe, Jon is a Targaryen. I don't know, he certainly doesn't have the Targaryen trademarks: the blue/violet eyes, the silvery hair, the almost otherworldy beauty. But might that be just because the Stark blood is strong in him?

Cat was never one of my favorites. My favorite woman, Brienne the Beauty, the Maid of Tarth of course.
When did someone talk about legitimizing Jon Snow? I totally don't remember that from the books. i always thought that Cat hated Jon because she couldn't take it out on Ned.

There are rumors of that, but I don't think it'd be appropriate to discuss it on the shows thread since a lot of people haven't read the books. (I know they've been out for a while, and the show won't be back until Spring 2012, but I like to let people remain in suspense.) Unless you can use spoiler tags here?

I don't think the timeline works for that, plus the only House Targaryen female (besides Dany) we ever see was actually a princess of Dorne.

They aged the show characters for, probably, a number of reasons. In the show, all the children/teens on the show you see are young. Dany (Daenerys) is 13, Jon is 16, etc.
There are some lesbian characters and bisexual characters you'll meet in the show. They aren't as well known as Renly/Loras, except for The Red Viper who is bisexual, who you'll meet later on.
You'll see instances of women fooling around with other women but I can't say that it's because they're attracted to them in a lot of cases, in some it's purely just for release.

Robert married Cersei to gain Lannister support in his civil war. Mad King Aerys (Dany's - yes I mean Danaerys, Grandfather) He was king before Robert and he also executed Ned's father and brother. We don't know who he was married to. I forget if it was Rhaegar who was married to Princess Eilia of Dorne or someone else. Rhaegar was the heir (Targaryen - the Last Dragon) he was the one who raped Ned's sister and Robert's betrothed, and started the civil war, which ended in Dany and her brother in exile, their relatives dead.
Petyr was fostered at Riverrun and grew up with Cat and her sister.

Thanks for the clarification and info. It makes a lot of sense now.
Robert wasn't descenced from Aerys blood line, right? He just took the crown after Aerys died and after the civil war.
Who killed Rhaegar?
So Robert is the one with all the bastard kids? Since Baratheons are all dark haired. And why didn't Robert know that Joffrey wasn't his son?

Robert is a Baretheon not a Targaryen, he killed Rhaegar at the battle of the Trident, in revenge for the rape. He was also the leader of the group of families that overthrew the Targaryen dynasty, that would be Him - Baretheon, House Stark, and House Lannister, as well as various and sundry other people like Howland Reed.
Jamie Lannister killed Mad King Aerys - even though he was one of Aerys' Kingsguard. It's why they call him the King-Slayer. He killed the king he was sworn to protect.

The interesting thing about how the books are written is that by the last one, you really start to feel for Jaime. Don't get too attached to your initial impressions of the characters because the rules are out the window.
They've only started there's a long way to go yet, and a lot of blood to spill.

I'm going to be a bit more careful with my posts, just in case, but yeah, like TX-Beau said, you shouldn't get too attached to the way you perceive any of the characters. With this series, you can always expect a curve ball thrown in somewhere. Also, as things progress, you get this sort of feeling that history has been re-written to suit the needs of the victors. The vilest of offenders may not have been so vile, and the most valiant heroes may not have been so heroic. I mean that's always the case, but you really start to get this feeling that you're missing something.

Note: I haven't seen any of the TV series.
I started reading the book series because B&N recommended me to read it. I got all 4 books for $20 which is a steal. I am about 300 pages into the first book and it is quite good. I'm at the part when they are conspiring about who attempted to kill Bran and they think that the King or Queen might be involved. The plot is a bit all over the place and it switches from one arc to another and then crosses all over so I am a bit curious how well it plays out on the screen. Actually I would almost think it would be a bit better as for the visual queues instead of chapters.
