So I enjoy the occasional bit of public nudity, and I came across this thread about boys pretty much all being expected to swim naked at school and college in the US and UK in the 1950s and 60s (even through the 1980s, some say), with clothed female spectators in attendance among other things, even at competitive meets and suchlike.
In the thread, a furious flame war has erupted with most younger members believing this to be pure bollocks (pardon the pun). One guy said that even if you had to skip the swimming because of an injury and had to watch the phys-ed class from the sidelines, you had to do it "in uniform" which for the swim class was naked. Seems completely OTT to me, so I'm wondering - you guys who were at school and varsity in the 50s and 60s (or anytime), was organised nude swimming there as prevalent as some of these guys make out?
It goes on for a few thousand posts, unfortunately, so I doubt anyone here will want to read the whole lot. I myself have only been reading from about 2100 posts in. I'm sure some of the posters in there are fantasising to an extent, but I wondered how much truth there was. I know the YMCA had nude swimming, but I didn't think schools did.I have read with interest several of these posts. I was a teacher's assistant in the mid 70's at a high school in the mid west. As an assistant, I would help out where asked. Several times I helped out in the pool for both the girls and boys gym class. It was always strictly forbidden for the girls and boys to be together. The boys were naked and the girls were not in class.
Anyone care to comment? I'm intrigued.
