Thank goodness the definition of marriage does change over time. Women were originally thought of as property and marriage was originally about an exchange of property.

The more important question is how much longer before Scalia chokes on his own bile and expires?

It just seems wrong to call him JUSTICE Scalia.

Bigot Scalia seems more fitting. He has truly earned that title.

Injustice Scalia prejudicing a current case once again? Its a pity they can't force him out of office for doing that. If you make a mistake in any profession, you pay the consequences, but not when you're a supreme court justice it seems. Cushy jobs for life. It's got to end.

Scalia Furious He Has to Hear About Gay Couples All Week

Well, this is a start. Scalia's name isn't in my spell check. But anyway if only this wasn't a joke page.

    Bitter Scalia Leaves U.S.
    Posted by Andy Borowitz

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Justice Antonin Scalia dropped a bombshell on the Supreme Court today, announcing his decision to resign from the Court “effective immediately” and leave the United States forever.

Calling this week “by far the worst week of my life,” Justice Scalia lashed out at his fellow-Justices and the nation, saying, “I don’t want to live in a sick, sick country that thinks the way this country apparently thinks.”

Justice Scalia said that he had considered fleeing to Canada, “but they not only have gay marriage but also national health care, which is almost as evil.”

Is this real? If so, I hope he carries out his promise of resigning and leaving the USA. Replace him with someone who isn't a homophobic asshole.

    ADDED:

I just saw this is humor. But what I said wasn't. He needs to go. Those vestiges of the Reagan administration are cancer in this country.

Andy Borowitz is a comedian so I doubt this is real---real---but probably (like most good comedy) close enough to the truth.

He's not going anywhere. I saw an interview on him in which he said he collects a full retirement benefit equal to his salary ($165K?) when he turned 65. So, he said that he essentially is working for free and that he dosen't care because he loves his job.

Sadly, everyone predicts Scalia can live another 10-20 years. It is not awful at all. This SOB will do everything in his power to ensure we stay second class citizens for good, and he doesn't care who knows it.

Nor will I when these anti-gay bigots start to die off.

I thought I had heard that Justice Ginsburg has pancreatic cancer?????

That alone would put probabilities quite high of somebody dying, but the Calculator in Bankside's post showed less than a two-thirds probability that ANY Justice would die.

Rareboy, I'll modify your post by saying that I hope Obama is able to make an appointment which replaces Scalia, Alito, Thomas, Roberts, or Kennedy. There seems to be some indication that Roberts may not be as entirely married to Doctrine as these others; and Kennedy is always considered a "swing vote" but I haven't seen much indication of that in years.

Of course, if the SCOTUS was impartial and nonpolitical as it is supposed to be, we would NOT be able to predict what most of the individual nine votes would be on most of the cases, but all too often it is entirely safe to make BIG MONEY BETS on how all nine of the Justices will vote.

Scalia Holds out Promise for Full Equal Rights in Every State

The Toad Acalia's best statement in his froth filled tantrum?

"In sum, that Court which finds it so horrific that Congress irrationally and hatefully robbed same-sex couples of the 'personhood and dignity' which state legislatures conferred upon them, will of a certitude be similarly appalled by state legislatures' irrational and hateful failure to acknowledge that 'personhood and dignity' in the first place…As far as this Court is concerned, no one should be fooled; it is just a matter of listening and waiting for the other shoe."
As angry as he may be about giving homo cock-suckers the same rights as straights, he hopefully is absolutely right about this one thing. The States are losing their grip on the other shoe. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every state acknowledged the 'personhood and dignity' of homosexuals in the first place and the systemic, government supported homophobia came to an end across the US?

Re: Scalia Holds out Promise for Full Equal Rights in Every State

It would have been nice if the court had done that today, and had ruled that bans on same sex marriage were unconstitutional. And maybe somewhere in all the legalese, they have done so, and we have not seen it yet. But I anticipate that the court only ruled on the narrow portion of law brought before them today. It will probably take a couple more suits to strike down other parts of the law and make marriage equality the law of the land.

Re: Scalia Holds out Promise for Full Equal Rights in Every State

In Scalia's written dissent on the SAME DATE ten years ago, when state laws against consensual sex ("sodomy") in private were struck down, he warned (in horror and panic) about the slippery slope that this would cause. OH MY GOD...if the SCOTUS can strike down what they did on June 26, 2003, it might lead to - GASP!! - gay people getting MARRIED!!!!! He said, in that dissent, that there would be "no justification" (I think those were his words), moving downward on the slippery slope, for the SCOTUS to refuse to allow gay marriage in the future.

Sorry, no link here...I'm just digesting things I've heard in the past day.

Yes, ten years ago Anton Scalia actually said something THAT I FULLY AGREE WITH!!! But, that is also because I thought that the Court disallowing anti-sodomy laws was a GREAT thing as well (the opposite of what Scalia thought). Of course I agree with him for reasons that he would find profoundly egregious - because, indeed, the SCOTUS would have been entirely unjustified continuing to let DOMA stand.

I didn't find out about that Scalia comment ten years ago - but, instead, in the last few hours.

Also, the fact that they didn't go ALL THE WAY and require all of the 38 non-aligned states to recognize a form of marriage which isn't even legal within their borders, was A GOOD THING, I'd say. We would have liked to see that happen, but I think that would have been giving the Republicans TOO MUCH red meat at once, and the backlash could have been horrific...perhaps even leading to talks of a civil war against gay people, and at least a noticeable increase in violence.

    Scalia's Shameful Joke

    http://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-...-scalias-court

There was a shocking, ugly moment during the argument of Obergefell v. Hodges, the same-sex marriage case, in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Right after Mary Bonauto, the lawyer challenging marriage bans in several states, completed her argument, a spectator rose from a back row and started screaming, “If you support gay marriage, you will burn in Hell!” As the man yelled, “It’s an abomination!,” guards carried him from the courtroom.

That wasn’t the ugly part, though. In the quiet moment after the man was removed, as his shouts vanished into the hallway, Justice Antonin Scalia filled the silence with a quip. “It was rather refreshing, actually,” he said.

The thread about the woman standing by the side of a road with her anti-homo signage brought to mind another more insidious danger....the fact that a 'justice' like Scalia will be considering the rights of homos all across the US in a case that could define social policy and attitudes for the next century.

Somehow though....the focus always seems to be on the God-bothering idiots with placards and the damage they do.

I can only say...thank whatever gods you do or don't pray to that Scalia isn't in control of this court or this issue.

I liked this writer's take on Scalia's "joke"....basically saying what he found to be "refreshing" was the short break they took after the protester was removed.

Loath Justice Scalia, but that's probably what he meant. That said, the lazy pricks don't need any more breaks, they work few enough hours as it is.
