Many of us, especially as kids, have been facinated with superhero comic books, movies and TV shows. I would imagine those on this board that liked such characters wished at least some of those heroes were gay.
So, which superheroes would you most want to see as openly gay and why?
And, what would you like to see them do with their boyfriends, partners and husbands when they're not fighting crime?
The heroes may be from comic books, motion pictures, television or any other medium.
Of course, the biggest and most important related fantasy I'd like to see come true would be that the publishers and movie and TV studios responsible for developing these characters would themselves show enough courage and foresight to depict some of their iconic characters as openly gay and create major new superheroes who are openly gay. If they did so, those companies and artists would finally start to enter modern times. As it stands, the perception, rightly or wrongly, of the industry will continue to be that it is made up chiefly of people unable to overcome their own homophobia and who continue to imply to their audiences that gay men can never be tough, masculine, heroic, etc. (and that men who are tough, masculine, heroic, etc. can never be gay). This notion may seem silly to some, but popular media, without a doubt, play a significant role in how groups of people and individuals that identify with certain communities, are perceived and treated in real life, and how much or how little they are respected.
Until then, we can always fantasize...
Some superheroes I'd like to see as gay include:
-Thor. My favorite comic book hero as a kid. He's a god with a huge body of pure, rock-hard muscle like granite and long, flowing hair. Who wouldn't fantasize about that?
-Spider-Man. I always loved his innocense and sense of humor in both the comics and the movies. Outside his suit he seems to be a friendly, ordinary guy that most people can relate to in some way. We could make out in one of those giant webs he spins.
-Captain America. The idea of this is intriguing not only because I like this character from the comics, but also because of the symbolism. Just think about it: a Gay Captain America. Imagine the tagline: "He stands for America. And America is Gay." Whatever we do, I'm sure that shield of his would come into play.
A few other ideas...
-The Green Hornet
-The Silver Surfer
-The Six Million Dollar Man
