    House music? Why!?!

So as a lifetime defender of Hip-Hop I try not to be harsh on other music genres and I chalk it up to personal tastes. I decided to fly back out to San Francisco to celebrate Thanksgiving and me and my partners one year anniversary!(Woot) We decided to hit the Castro since we haven't been in about 6 months and I now remember why. We hit Toad Hall, Q-Bar and the Cafe. Each was playing the same exact music!?! How is this fucking possible? I don't understand the need to remix "Rihanna's-Only girl in the world" when its already house-esqe. The Dj's or either blind or too busy dancing to their own music to notice 80% of the crowd is not moving to the bullshit your playing (Sigh) I'm so through with clubs :/ Until I start Djing again. But I'll still be negated to the "Hip-hop" night because the Castro is Caucasian land. -end rant-

reminds me of when Top 40 radio plays a "remix" that's basically just the original version with a casio beat over it.

I'm not an expert but I think there's good house music and horrendous house music. The stuff that dominates gay dance bars is the latter.

i mean, it's not JUST the music, it's the DJs who just don't know how to read a crowd if what you're saying about 80% people not dancing because of the music is true.

Maybe the cowboy bars might be better with some sort of country on the jukebox.

    Blasphemer!
How dare you talk down on house!
But then again if you've only listen to the "commercial" side of what is considered to be "house" then i do feel for you.
The best house was hands down back in the 90s.
Then well, we have the shit that is today, the good stuff is their but you have to riffle through it.
Trust in me, once you've got a taste of some good house music, youll never go back.

Never the less, no matter how tired and repetitive today's house may it, it STILL trumps that ghetto tired rehashed shit hip-hop is producing each and every time.

My friend and I helped transform the local gay bar from house to more hip hop because we'd bring our own CDs for the DJ to play haha

You are indeed missing something. I do not like dance music . Gimme some Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes, Joan Jett, Sex Pistols, and The Fratellis anytime. As for dancing, I like the darker stuff like NIN, Curve, and Chemical Brothers.

I'm sure, like any genre, it really depends on the artist and song. I try not to say that I dislike any genre, because I'm sure that someone could find a song under any of them that I would instantly fall in love with.

As far as House, the first artist that comes to mind for me is Lisa Shaw ..love her. She has many influences, though. I don't think all of her songs are strictly House.

I remember reading a comment on YouTube from a guy who jokingly suggested singing Disturbed's "Down With the Sickness" on karaoke night at a gay bar and how it would freak everyone out. The laughed at the visual. But if some brave soul did, I'd buy them a drink to commemorate.

"All African Americans" don't like hip hop music, either. But many are brought up in its culture, so that's what they can identify with. (Interestingly enough, my Nigerian friends have more varied tastes in music than just hip hop/RnB, so I'm thinking that culture definitely has something to do with it.) I wonder if that's the same thing with some gay men, or are they somehow intrinsically drawn to house music?

Btw, are you from the UK? Because I'm pretty sure that the UK in general just appreciates house/techno music more than the US.

Yeah I'm from the UK. That's interesting....I've never really given it much thought, but I think it's one of the gay stereotypes over here (that we all like dance music and female singers).

It's a gay stereotype in the US, as well, but I think liking dance music is a stereotype of the UK as a whole, as well.

It seems dance music is much more popular in Europe than the US in general, not just with gays. Things are changing as of late with the rise of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke-dollar sigh-Ha, etc. (perhaps a bit of a throwback to the 80's), but the transition is slow.

Totally agree. For the most part I've found something to like about every genre, other than perhaps death metal, which scares the shit out of me, plain and simple. At times I think music is too diverse to even confine within genres at all, but that's for another thread.

I actually agree, but I think we mainly keep genres around for the sake of maintaining some sanity and order. A lot of times you can clearly hear a multitude of influences in music, but we just say is "Alternative" or "Pop".

I also agree with Death Metal..and also Screamo. I won't say I dislike the genres completely, but I do not like being yelled at .

I've always been a fan of RnB because it's so easy on the ears, and I enjoy the beats on hip hop tracks (my enjoyment of the lyrics, however, may vary). I used to hate metal and most rock in general, but ever since I got into rassling and MMA and hearing that type of music being used in promos for them, I've started liking it. So I'd say that culture does influence musical taste somewhat.

Isn't House the music genre that was invented or infiltrated by gays and now has become mandatory to stick to, despite musical evolution and taste?

Yeah, because a genre dominated by the urban and other wise "black" youth is evil and a is not deemed music until the white population finds a use for it...correct? Fuck off.

What's with the hate towards hip hop music? It's no more vapid than most GaGa and Britney songs that most gay men seem to love. Better beats, too.

I suppose it’s alot easier for gay guys to relate to a leggy blonde poptart singing about looking hot at the club and screwing all the straight guys versus some black guy rapping about poverty, drug dependency and urban violence.

Unless the guy rapping is attractive by pretty-boy standards, white and is terribly overrated as a lyricist Eminem, you’re not going to find too many avid supporters of hip-hop around here. Hip-hop is too demanding of a genre, many of the themes explored in hip-hop are threatening and off-putting to the average mainstream gay listener.

Not to mention, hypocritical. The very same argument he provides for house music can also be applied for the hip-hop he thinks is trash. And this can be applied to any genre of music: if you're too dense to bother to expose yourself to the artists who do think outside of the unoriginal, shitty, mainstream mold then you can't bash that genre and honestly expect for the rest of us to take you seriously. There's some bad apples in every bunch, but I'm not going to knock apples as being a healthy source of sustenance just b/c I ate one that was small and rotted. That's silly imo. Take your time and pick better apples for the next go around.

I personally love house music, but I just can't take the super fast techno/ trance they play at some clubs. I don't mind house and electro but I do agree those bars in castro need some slower paced music. I can't imagine dancing in those tiny bars to begin with yet alone kick back and enjoy my cocktail with the crack head speeds they're playing those songs at.

    That song is awesome, Moe!

When she sings "this one's for Dilla" it reminded me... for those who think hip-hop is trash, listen to the stuff J. Dilla produced or involved himself in for a taste of how amazing hip-hop can sound, if you still don't dig it than you don't deserve music.
