Adele’s quiet power amid the pop girl riot

Imagine the pop music marketplace in summer 2011 as an extravagant, glitzy party, a bacchanal in a Vegas ballroom. Mirror balls spin as the sonic bombast pushes into the sparkling throng, lasers cutting the space with red, dancers laughing and screaming, reckless joy and cocktails flying.

The women are dressed in their richest peacock best. There's Lady Gaga in a deconstructed Christian Lacroix gown, Rihanna's in a corner wearing S&M leather, Katy Perry with her skirt so short that it could be a belt, Beyoncé's beauty shining and Ke$ha in a leopard print something-or-other.

Into this chaos glides Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, alone, with a show-stopping grace and penetrating green eyes, full-figured and fearless, in an elegant evening gown and a string of pearls, unconcerned with eclipsing the princesses and queens. So self-assured as to silence the room, all heads turning, her presence negating the rhinestones and ridiculousness. Whispers.

That's one way to understand British singer Adele's breathtaking arrival into America's consciousness over the last three years. Another way is to play her “Rolling in the Deep” — No.1 on the singles chart for the fifth straight week — very loud and listen to a pearl of a pop song that combines essential ingredients of the Western popular music canon. So much funky, dynamic unity drives “Rolling in the Deep” that after it's over you want to hear it again because it'll be a different kind of great next time around.

The song's a humming machine of R&B: the strummed acoustic guitar opening, that thumping rock 'n' roll rhythm, the claps, the choir doing call-and-response in the background, the teeny curlicue of guitar that sneaks in from time to time, the bass occupying the “deep” of the title, the counterpoint piano punctuating as if from a Memphis church, snare drum, not sounding chaotic like so much of Gaga's “Born This Way” but offered with an effortless confidence. (Another metaphor: If pop music is an automobile, Lady Gaga fancies herself a souped-up Ed “Big Daddy” Roth two-seater muscle car, and Adele is a black Cadillac sedan, so comfortable on the inside.)

That's no small feat coming from a young British singer, born in North London to a teenage mother in 1988 and discovered on MySpace in 2007. Along with the dear (chemically) departed Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone (currently working with Mick Jagger), and Welsh singer Duffy and her curiously strong pipes, Adele is part of a small group of female British singers who over the past half-decade have drawn from vocalists as diverse as Mary J. Blige, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin and Ann Peebles to create new soul music.

Yey! Adele is back at #1

...Columbia/Epic Label Group Chairman Rob Stringer says of Adele's success: "Adele is the real deal... She writes, is a fantastic singer and in total control... It just goes to show you don’t have to sell your soul to be successful... the public responds when it gets something authentic."

Yes Adele's "21" returns, as expected, to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a tenth non-consecutive week (114,000; down 5%) and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" falls to No. 2 (100,000; down 42%).

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" continues to roll at No. 1 (224,000; down 8%) On the Hot 100.

Adele's "21" has sold 2,209,533 copies in the US so far making it the biggest seller this year!

Rick Rubin on Why Adele's Hot Streak Is 'Just Beginning'

As Adele's "21" enjoys its tenth non-consecutive week atop the Billboard 200 -- though it's projected to be knocked out this week by the "Hell: The Sequel" debut by Bad Meets Evil (Eminem and Royce da 5'9") -- Rick Rubin says he doesn't think the British singer and songwriter's sophomore album has peaked yet.

"Really, we are just on our first single ('Rolling in the Deep,' with 'Someone Like You' just coming out in the U.S.) and we think there are probably five, so I think it's just the beginning," Rubin, who produced five tracks on "21" -- including Adele's remake of the Cure's "Lovesong" -- and is also co-chairman of Columbia Records, Adele's label, tells Billboard.com. "And she's barely toured at all, so really it's in the baby stages. I think it's a beautiful album that we're all really proud of, and it's amazing that it's connecting with people in the way that it is and we just hope it continues to do so."

Rubin says that the success of "21" -- which is double-platinum in the U.S. and this year's top-selling album so far at more than seven million copies worldwide -- has surpassed any of his expectations, and he chalks it up to the simple appeal of Adele as an artist. "She is an incredible singer," he notes. "She bares her soul in her songwriting, and it's the real thing...She uses her vocal instrument in a way that we don't get to hear a lot. What she is doing, it's a very pure expression of herself and it resonates with people. There is no trickery involved. It's a really honest album."

I do not like one track from this chick.

And I am all about the Leona Lewis', the Amy Whinos, the Lily Allens (Not saying they are the same but I love them)

All that I need to love her is a hot dance beat behind the track and there is a lot of that floating around.

Basically if her album sounded like this I would all over her

Adele finds her voice again as she lines up judging role on The Voice

Adele is set to return to the stage after recovering from a bout of laryngitis as she is rumoured to up for a role as a judge on new talent show The Voice.

The star has been banned from performing for the past month under doctor's orders but has now been given a clean bill of health.
This means Adele will fit enough to perform at London's iTunes Festival tomorrow (July 7).
She told Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles: 'It's basically a hole in your vocal cord but I sang through it so that's why it popped. I'm better now, it's fine, I got the all-clear.'
Adele was forced to cancel her North American tour in early June due to laryngitis and also had to turn down a duet with Beyoncé at Glastonbury.
The news comes as reports emerge that she's a hot contender to join the judging panel of BBC1's X Factor rival, The Voice.
Cee Lo, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton have already been confirmed as judges.
Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue have also been touted as guest judges.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: 'Her style and look is also very different to that of Cheryl Cole, so if we could get them both on board it would be fantastic.'
Adele has kept tight-lipped about the show but did reveal to Moyles she had something 'big' planned.
'There's a possibility I'm doing something quite big next year – I've got a meeting about it on Friday.'
Meanwhile, Someone like You has become the first single of the decade to sell over one million copies.
Adele's hit song becomes one of only sixteen singles since 2000 to hit one million sales.
Poker Face by Lady Gaga and I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas were the last two singles.

Adele replaces Eminem with biggest selling digital album

She outsells Eminem just a week after he sold one million Recovery downloads…

Adele has surpassed Eminem just one week after he became the first artist to sell one million downloads of an album in the US.

Eminem broke the record with Recovery in early July, just pipping Adele to the title – at the time, her 21 album was just eight thousand downloads behind with sales of 992,000.

But now the Rolling In The Deep songstress has hit the million mark and surpassed the rapper to have the highest ever digital sales for an LP.

It took Recovery just over a year to make the milestone but Adele managed it in five months, meaning that she now also holds the record for the fastest selling digital album.

As previously reported on MTV, Someone Like You is the biggest selling British single of the decade and the first song to sell over one million copies in the UK in the 2010s.

21 is also Britain’s highest selling album of 2011 so far, according to Official Charts Company figures.

Adele’s sales are likely to climb even higher now that she has been given the all-clear to perform again following a health scare. "It's basically a hole in your vocal chord but I sang through it so that's why it popped," she told Radio 1. "I'm better now, it's fine, I got the all-clear.

Adele Replaces Beyonce Atop U.K. Album Chart

Adele's "21" (XL Recordings) moved back to the top of the new U.K. album chart yesterday (Sunday), as British boy band The Wanted scored their second No. 1 single in the territory with "Glad You Came" (Geffen/Universal).

"21," already easily the U.K.'s bestselling album of 2011, spent 16 of its first 17 weeks on the chart at No. 1 from February onwards, then its next seven at No. 2. It reclaimed top spot in the Official Charts Company's new data with weekly sales of 43,000. Its predessor "19" also moved up one spot, 4-3, and in another stellar week for the XL label, the Horrors posted a career-best No. 5 debut for their third album "Skying," with 13,000 sales.

he bestselling artist album for the last two weeks, Beyoncé's "4" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment), fell to No. 2, and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (Interscope/Universal) 3-4. Dutch star Caro Emerald's "Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor" (Dramatico) improved 7-6, swapping places with Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (Elektra/Warner Music), while Foo Fighters' "Wasting Light" (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) moved up 12-8.

edit: my fav ones atm are Set fire to the rain and Turning tables. I also adore Someone like you, which I really feel most for, but I had a large dose of it by now so I skip it hehe

Adele: Winehouse didn't realize her genius

'Amy flies in paradise,' says singer widely viewed as Winehouse's successor

Widely hailed as the most successful British solo act since Amy Winehouse, "Rolling in the Deep" singer Adele, 23, took to her blog Monday to express her grief over 27-year-old Winehouse's sudden death.

Not many people have it in them to do something they love, simply because they love it, with no fuss and no compromise," Adele wrote. "But she knew what she was capable of and didn't even need to try. If she wanted to do something she would, and if she didn't, she'd say, 'F**k off.' It came easy to her and that's why we all loved her so much.

"We believed every word she wrote, and it would sink in deep when she sang them. Amy paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again whilst being fearlessly hilarious and blase about the whole thing."

I don't think she ever realized just how brilliant she was and how important she is, but that just makes her even more charming," Adele continued. "Although I'm incredibly sad about Amy passing, I'm also reminded of how immensely proud of her I am as well — and grateful to be inspired by her. Amy flies in paradise."

As teenagers, both Adele and Winehouse attended the prestigious London School for Performing Arts & Technology (though not at the same time). Other famous students include Leona Lewis, Kate Nash, Jessie J and Imogen Heap.

Adele's "21" was back to No. 1 last week on the Billboard 200 albums chart for an 11th non-consecutive week (up two slots with 77,000).

Adele's 11 week run at the top makes it the biggest No. 1 since Taylor Swift's "Fearless" also spent 11 frames in the penthouse in late 2008 and early 2009. Since the chart began using SoundScan data in May of 1991, only eight albums have been No. 1 for 11 weeks or longer. If "21" hits a 12th week at No. 1, it will tie the runs racked up by Santana's "Supernatural" (1999) and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" (1995-1996).

Adele & Christina Aguilera Hang in L.A.
It was a collision of diva power, as Christina Aguilera and Adele spent time together backstage at Adele's show at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last night. "'Someone Like You' is my favorite! Beautiful to see all her fans sing it tonight! ;-) love u Adele," Christina tweeted along with two photos of the women. British singer-songwriter Talay Riley recently revealed that Christina has listed Adele's latest disc as an inspiration for her upcoming album. "She [Aguilera] wants this album to be the one which touches people and reflects all the personal experiences she's been through in the last few years," Riley told U.K.'s the Daily Star, adding the "Bionic" singer "sees Adele as her new inspiration." Adele: "I Puke Quite a Lot Before Going on Stage"

Adele's second album 21 is set to become of the bestselling and most acclaimed of this year, and she's moved audiences to tears with soul-searing renditions of songs like "Someone Like You," but the British soul superstar still battles major stage fright.

"I puke quite a lot before going on stage," Adele, 22, tells British Vogue in its October issue -- gracing its cover with a stunning closeup shot. "Though never actually on stage," the Grammy winner clarifies. But the pre-show puke guarantees a great performance, she says.

"But then, I sh*t myself before everything...The bigger the freak-out, the more I enjoy the show!"

One thing the curvy star doesn't get caught up in: Hollywood's obsession with diets and getting thing. "I've seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down," she tells Vogue. "And I don't want that in my life...I have [body] insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me."

Right now, British star is single. "I do get massively distracted when I've got someone in my life, which I can't afford to do right now," she explains. "Besides, no one treats me as well as I do."

But, one day, if the right guy comes along, she's not opposed to becoming a mom -- to little boys, that is.

"I've always got on better with boys. Most of my friends are boys," Adele admits. "Like, if I have children, I want five boys. Boys love their mothers whereas girls can be so mean to each other."

The October issue of British Vogue hits stands on Thursday.

She's so pretty. And has an amazing voice.

On principle, I dislike girls (or boys) who are as needy as that, but... wow. Her voice is just amazing.

Set Fire to the Rain/Someone Like You/Rolling in the Deep. My favourites, in order from most to least.

How many of you sing Adele with your cringey singing voices, then? xD. Not ashamed, I love singing Adele, especially Someone Like You. Especially if I'm out and it comes on in a club.

Adele Forced To Cancel U.S. Tour Dates Due To Illness

Adele has been forced to cancel her upcoming 10 city sold-out tour of the U.S. due to a haemorrhage into her vocal chord. Vocal chord issues forced the British singer to postpone dates earlier this year as well. Adele has just wrapped up touring around the UK and was preparing to kick off her US tour on October 7 in Atlantic City, NJ when her illness reappeared (see below for full list of cancelled US tour dates). Renowned for her powerful live vocal performances, Adele has been advised by doctors that she’ll need an extended rest period in order to begin to recuperate properly. Further details to follow regarding these cancelled dates. Refunds may be obtained at point of purchase. Adele recently posted the following on her site about the cancellations:

“singing is literally my life, its my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or i risk damaging my voice forever. i have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously i take it and how truly devastated and annoyed i am by this. wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as im sure you know! my voice is weak and i need to build it back up. I’m gonna be starting up vocal rehab as soon as, and start building my over all stamina in my voice, body and mind. i will be back and im gonna smash the ball out the park once im touring again. i apologise from the bottom of my heart, sincerely i do. i know its not only disappointing because of the show, but its plane tickets, hotel bookings, birthdays, anniversaries and time wasted. but please have faith in me that this is the only thing i can do to make sure i can always sing and always make music for you to the best of my ability. truly yours and yours only forever, adele xx”

Adele - Adele Writes Bond Theme

Adele has finished writing her James Bond theme song, and will head to the studio soon to record it.

The 'Someone Like You' singer is preparing to go into the studio to record the track, which she wrote during a recent week off touring, and will then submit it for the next spy adventure which is currently being filmed.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Adele is the obvious choice to record the next Bond theme. The last few songs for the spy movies have hardly set the charts alight. After her success this year filmmakers know the song is almost guaranteed to be a huge hit."

Adele is going into the studio with producer Paul Epworth, who has previously worked with Plan B, Florence and the Machine and Cee Lo Green.

Several music legends have previously recorded Bond themes including Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Madonna, Tom Jones and more recently Chris Cornell and a duet by Jack White and Alicia Keys. In many cases the tracks are based around the film's title, but the latest Bond project is still only publicly known as 'Bond 23'.

The film will see Daniel Craig reprise his role as 007, while Sam Mendes is directing. Rhys Ifans, Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem have all been linked to the movie. And Daniel - returning for his third outing as the British spy, after 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace' - is excited about how it is currently shaping up.

He recently said: "We've got a great script this time. I'm as excited about this script as I was about the 'Casino Royale' script. I think in Sam we've got the perfect director. The cast is coming together now. I can't wait to get going with it."

The film is expected to be released in October 2012.

Not if but when Adele wins Album, Record and Song of the Year at this year's Grammy awards, she will become only the second artist in Grammy history to win all top 4 awards (she won Best New Artist in 2008).

Hilariously, the only other person to do this was Christopher Cross (yeah, you read that right) and he did it all in the same year too!

    Adele's '21' Hits 15th Week at No. 1

Adele's "21" album hangs in for a whopping 15th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 124,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan (down 14%). It's the only title to move over 100,000 this week, as the No. 2 set -- Drake's "Take Care" -- shifts 42,000 (down 41%).

The last album to spend more weeks at No. 1 was the soundtrack to "Titanic," which claimed 16 frames atop the list in 1998. Considering the scant number of albums that were released this week, "21" will likely nab a sweet 16th week at No. 1.
